Reuters2 days ago
August 3 - Spencer Horwitz homered twice, doubled and drove in a career-high six runs, Tommy Pham also went deep, and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Colorado Rockies 9-5 in Denver on Sunday.
Nick Gonzales had four hits for Pittsburgh, which salvaged the finale of the three-game series.
Mickey Moniak, Hunter Goodman and Jordan Beck hit consecutive home runs in the sixth inning, but it wasn't enough for Colorado, which was vying for its first home sweep of the season. Beck finished with two hits before being ejected in the seventh inning, and Yanquiel Fernandez also had two hits for the Rockies.
The Pirates jumped out to a lead for the third straight game. Horwitz led off the day with a double, went to third on a groundout and scored on a Gonzales single. Pham made it 3-0 with a two-out, two-run homer to center. It was his fifth of the season.
Horwitz made it 5-0 when he followed a walk to Jared Triolo with his first home run of the day, and Colorado got a run back in the fourth on Beck's RBI single.
Pittsburgh extended its lead in the sixth. Jack Suwinski walked and went to third on Triolo's single. Ryan Rolison relieved Bradley Blalock, and Horwitz hit a ball to the second deck in right to make it 8-1.
Blalock (1-3) gave up seven runs on six hits and walked four in 5-2/3 innings.
The Rockies rallied against Mitch Keller in the bottom of the inning. Tyler Freeman led off with a walk and Moniak homered to right, his 17th, to make it 8-3. Goodman followed with his 21st homer, a 451-foot shot to the concourse in left, and Beck made it three straight homers with his 14th of the season.
That was all for Keller (5-10), who allowed five runs on seven hits in five-plus innings.
The Pirates added an insurance run in the eighth inning when reliever Angel Chivilli hit Suwinski and Henry Davis leading off, both moved up on a groundout and Suwinski scored on another groundout.

SEC Football: Any Given Saturday Review – Grit, glory, and chaos

Season 1 Episode Guide Opening Kickoff QB1 Shock the World Turning Point Football Family Bragging Rights Just Win When it comes to college football, no conference stirs up more passion, loyalty, and heated debate than the SEC. Short for the Southeastern Conference, this American football league isn't just a collection of teams — it's a way of life. Across twelve Saturdays, twelve teams battle for a shot at the playoffs, while fiercely loyal, die-hard fans rally their teams on from the side-lines. The pageantry, rivalries, and local pride that elevate these games beyond the field are all shown in their epic glory across these 7 episodes, and Netflix certainly don't hold back. From Alabama's dynastic dominance to the fever-pitch intensity of Auburn vs. LSU, SEC football is nothing short of a religion in parts of the American South. Netflix has been leaning hard into sports content lately, and SEC Football: Any Given Saturday is the latest docuseries to throw its football-shaped hat into the arena, aiming to spotlight what makes this league so compelling. Across the series, Any Given Saturday tracks several teams throughout the 2024 season, documenting their highs and lows while weaving in some of the year's standout moments. If you've seen any of Netflix's other football docs, the format will feel familiar. You get a mix of player interviews, head coach commentary, family insight, and locker room access, allowing you to really get a feel for the culture and who the big players are at each team. This is undoubtedly a tried-and-tested structure, but one that works well here. The show also does a commendable job showcasing the history and stakes of each team, with unique rituals and local traditions set alongside the distinct mindsets and preparation styles each squad brings into game day. On the field, the action is just as captivating. Carefully edited footage and well-timed commentary bring iconic moments from the season back to life. 2024 had a treasure trove of unique moments, including a wild finish between Auburn and Texas A&M. We also get a shocker between Alabama and Vanderbilt, along with a deliciously chaotic final Saturday where some teams fight to salvage their season and others eye the playoffs. For the most part, the pacing is tight, and college football fans will be in their element here, especially reliving all the highs and lows each team faces. Motivational speeches and team talks help to add an extra emotional punch, and these are edited nicely to maximize the rising stakes in just the right way. Any Given Saturday isn't trying to reinvent the sports docuseries genre, and it may not dominate the field on Netflix — but it doesn't need to. This is a compelling, well-produced look at one of the most passionate leagues in American sports. It captures the intensity, heartbreak, and hope that fuels SEC football. And for fans, that'll be more than enough.

August 5 - The PGA Tour averaged 2.969 million viewers for broadcasts on CBS, an increase of 17 percent from last year, the network announced on Tuesday. The average is the network's best since 2018. Per CBS, 14 of the 19 final-round telecasts saw a year-over-year ratings jump. Trump to announce White House taskforce for 2028 LA Olympics

Donald Trump is expected to announce on Tuesday that he will create a White House taskforce to oversee elements of the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. The president is set to sign an executive order establishing the taskforce, which will include cabinet members and government officials and will handle security and transportation on the first Games in the US in nearly three decades. The announcement comes after a summer of political clashes between the administration and Los Angeles leaders. 'During his first term, President Trump was instrumental in securing America's bid to host the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. The president considers it a great honor to oversee this global sporting spectacle in his second term,' Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, said in a statement. With the Olympics just three years away, the city has been rushing to prepare for the Games, which are expected to attract millions of people over the course of 16 days. City leaders have been in what the Los Angeles Times described as 'high-stakes' negotiations with LA28, the committee managing the event, over the use of city staff, including police officers. Meanwhile, a proposed ballot measure could require some Olympic venues to receive approval from voters in order to be used. Meanwhile, Los Angeles has been through a tense standoff with the Trump administration, including over aggressive immigration raids in the region and the deployment of US troops into the city over the objection of city and state leaders. The International Olympic Committee president, Thomas Bach, has expressed confidence in the 'strong' city and said the games have the support of US leaders. 'With regard to LA, we have the full support of the president of the United States and the governor of California and the mayor of Los Angeles for the success of these Olympic Games,' Bach told the Associated Press in June. Trump has frequently touted his support for hosting the games in Los Angeles. His recent budget bill allocates $1bn for security, planning and other Olympic-related costs. In a statement to the Hollywood Reporter, which broke the news, the chairperson and president of LA28 expressed 'deep appreciation' to the administration for their 'unwavering support'. Sign up to First Thing Our US morning briefing breaks down the key stories of the day, telling you what's happening and why it matters after newsletter promotion 'The creation of this taskforce marks an important step forward in our planning efforts and reflects our shared commitment to delivering not just the biggest, but the greatest Games the world has ever seen in the summer of 2028,' Casey Wasserman said.
