Visually impaired students join voter awareness drive under SVEEP in Kolkata's Rashbehari constituency
The program was conducted by the Office of the Electoral Registration Officer, 160-Rashbehari, under the guidance of the District Election Officer-Kolkata South.
The event witnessed participation from visually impaired students of various age groups, including a significant number of youth aged 17+ and 18+, many of whom attended a voter awareness program for the first time.Additional Chief Electoral Officer-West Bengal Arindam Niyogi, Deputy Chief Electoral Officer-West Bengal Subrata Pal and District PwD Icon for Kolkata South Sudipendu Dutta participated in the programme. Their interactive sessions with the students inspired and motivated the young participants to embrace their role in the world's largest democracy, WB-CEO's office said in a statement.
Several programmes, including distribution of Braille Leaflets, specially designed Braille materials containing comprehensive information on voter enrolment and facilities available for PwD electors were handed over to the students to ensure accessible and inclusive communication, were undertaken, an official said.
'Two bright young students shared their insights on how to strengthen democracy, increase participation of PwD Electors in the Electoral Process and highlighted the importance of informed participation and the need for inclusivity in democratic processes,' it said.A lively quiz session on interesting facts and details about India's electoral system was organized where the students, which enhanced understanding of the voting process.PVC Electoral Photo Identity Cards (EPICs) were handed over to some newly enrolled young electors, marking a significant step in their electoral journey.The campaign was a resounding success, culminating in the collection of 17 new Form 6 applications for voter enrolment from young, visually impaired students, ready to contribute actively to the democratic process.

Lucknow: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday said that public representatives are the most trusted link between the people and the govt and their ideas and suggestions should be actively incorporated in policy planning and implementation. Holding a special dialogue with MLAs from Kanpur division at his official residence here on Sunday, the CM reviewed 1,362 proposed infrastructure projects worth Rs 10,914 crore and said that priorities should be set in consultation with public representatives to ensure swift and people-centric service delivery. Public representatives from six districts — Kanpur Nagar, Kanpur Dehat, Farrukhabad, Kannauj, Etawah, and Auraiya — were invited to participate in the session. "Ideas and suggestions of public representatives are not merely means of dialogue but also reflect public aspirations, which should be actively incorporated in policy planning and implementation," the CM said. He asked officials not to treat the experiences and regional insights of legislators as merely documentary inputs, but to use them as a living basis for policymaking. The CM directed the public works department (PWD) to set priorities for proposed work in consultation with local representatives and ensure timely commencement of projects. He described the initiatives not merely as govt expenditure but as "capital of public trust". The CM asked officials to ensure prompt approval and execution of projects prioritised by public representatives. He asked the urban development department officials to ensure that the names of local public representatives were included on foundation stones and plaques related to urban development work. Yogi also sought feedback on the ground realities, public expectations, progress of development work, and administrative coordination in their respective constituencies. "Kanpur division holds a vital place in the balanced and sustainable development of the state. It is not only the industrial and educational backbone of the state, but also a centre of cultural diversity, historical awareness, and political commitment of public representatives," Yogi said. Describing the Kanpur division as a "pioneer of development", Yogi expressed confidence that it would soon emerge as a model for not just Uttar Pradesh but for the entire country. Kanpur city is set to be gifted with 426 projects worth Rs 5,006 crore, followed by Farrukhabad (308 projects worth Rs 2,476 crore), Kanpur Dehat (336 projects worth Rs 1,214 crore), Kannauj (98 projects worth Rs 1,076 crore), Etawah (128 projects worth Rs 620 crore), and Auraiya (66 projects worth Rs 524 crore).

Rajasthan govt announces closure, demolition of unsafe school buildings
Jaipur, Jul 27 (PTI) Two days after a portion of the Piplodi Government School in Rajasthan's Jhalawar district collapsed, killing seven children, the state government on Sunday announced a series of urgent measures, including closure and demolition of unsafe school buildings, GIS-mapping of all vulnerable structures, and use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to monitor structural safety. School Education and Panchayati Raj Minister Madan Dilawar, who chaired an emergency meeting with senior officials from both the departments, said a proposal of Rs 150 crore under the disaster management fund has been prepared for repair works in 7,500 schools across 170 tehsils, officials said. The move comes amid growing concerns over the vulnerability of school infrastructure, especially during the monsoon season in southeastern Rajasthan. Dilawar said a statewide survey is being conducted by the district collectors to identify the dilapidated school buildings. 'Buildings found to be structurally unsafe will be marked with a red cross and shut down immediately. These will be demolished on priority, and temporary classrooms using container units will be arranged as an interim solution," Dilawar said. In a statement, the minister said the state will create a GIS-based application linked to the Shala Darpan portal to catalogue all dilapidated and repairable buildings. The platform will also integrate AI-based monitoring to assess building safety and guide budget allocations. The minister also announced the creation of a quality control unit within the Samagra Shiksha scheme to supervise school construction, and ordered that all construction materials and workmanship be tested through PWD-certified labs. In case of substandard construction, the contractor and engineers will be held financially liable, he said. In a move extending beyond government institutions, Dilawar said that private schools across the state will also be surveyed for safety compliance. Checks will also include fitness and medical status of school vehicles and drivers, while first-aid and fire safety training will be provided to the school management committees. To bridge funding gaps, Dilawar said all MLAs and MPs in the state will be asked to contribute 20 per cent of their development fund towards school safety measures. Additionally, a demand will be placed with the concerned ministers to use 20 per cent of funds from Dang, Magra and Mewat development schemes for the same purpose. Meanwhile, in anticipation of heavy rainfall in southeastern Rajasthan, the district collectors have been authorised to declare school holidays in the vulnerable districts. The minister also instructed Panchayati Raj officials to conduct a review of pink toilet construction, ensure uncompromised quality in all ongoing projects, and enforce regular maintenance of public toilets. CET conducted smoothly across Haryana; officials, volunteers praised for support
1 2 Chandigarh: The two-day Common Eligibility Test (CET) organised by the Haryana Staff Selection Commission (HSSC) concluded smoothly on Sunday. More than 90% of candidates appeared at around 3,000 examination centres set up across the state in coordination with the district administration and the education department. The seamless conduct of the exam, with hardly any incidents of unfair means or candidate harassment, marked the first major success of the Nayab Singh Saini-led BJP government in its third term. Chief minister Nayab Singh Saini praised the coordinated efforts of officers and employees across Haryana, stating that the CET set a perfect example of efficient administration. "The smooth and efficient conduct of the CET was made possible due to teamwork," he said while interacting with reporters in Panchkula. From public transport arrangements by Haryana Roadways and shuttle services, to facilitation by police personnel at and around exam centres, officials worked in unison. Like Saturday, HSSC chairman Himmat Singh and transport minister Anil Vij conducted first-hand inspections of arrangements at centres and bus depots, and interacted with students. At several centres, police personnel acted as Samaritans. "We are compiling a list of such Samaritans -- officials and employees who went beyond their duties to help candidates. We will not only recognise their service but also recommend that the state government honour them," said Himmat Singh, who lauded the dedication of those on duty. In Kaithal, the Vaishno Sewa Samiti set up camps outside RKSD College, Jat College, and Government School at Jakholi Adda, offering tea, water, and food. They also provided tents, chairs, coolers, and fans to ensure comfort for visitors. In Karnal, Nilokheri SDM Ashok Kumar set an inspiring example when a candidate, Renu Devi, was injured in a motorcycle accident on route to the exam. The SDM ensured she received first aid and personally drove her to the exam centre, enabling her to take the test. Renu Devi and her husband expressed heartfelt gratitude to the SDM and the Karnal district administration. In Narnaul and Mahendragarh, CET-2025 witnessed a heartwarming display of compassion as volunteers from the District Red Cross Society assisted hundreds of candidates, especially Persons with Disabilities (PwD), at exam centres.
