Jeannie Seely, Who Pushed Boundaries and Broke Hearts at the Grand Ole Opry, Dies at 85
Jeannie Seely, who in the 1960s helped transform the image of women in country music from demure, gingham-clad helpmeet to self-possessed free spirit, died on Friday in Hermitage, Tenn., a suburb of Nashville. She was 85. Her death, in a hospital, was announced by the Country Music Association. The cause was an intestinal infection, said Don Murry Grubbs, Ms. Seely's publicist. A mainstay of the Grand Ole Opry for more than five decades, Ms. Seely had more than a dozen Top 40 country hits between 1966 and 1974 and was known as 'Miss Country Soul' for the torch-like quality of her vocals. Her most popular recording, 'Don't Touch Me,' reached No. 2 on the Billboard country chart and crossed over to the mainstream Hot 100 in 1966. A sensual ballad whose lyrics stress emotional commitment over sexual gratification, the song has been covered by numerous artists, including the folk singer Carolyn Hester, the reggae artist Nicky Thomas and the soul music pioneer Etta James. The song won Ms. Seely the Grammy Award for best female country vocal performance in 1967. The record's less-is-more arrangement — slip-note piano, sympathetic background singers and sighing steel guitar — was vintage Nashville Sound on the cusp of 'countrypolitan,' its pop-inflected successor. 'Don't open the door to heaven if I can't come in/Don't touch me if you don't love me,' Ms. Seely admonishes her lover, her voice abounding with unfulfilled desire. Want all of The Times? Saweetie Feels ‘Hella Pressure' On New EP
Saweetie is back with some new music to set the stage for her long-awaited debut album. Her latest EP, Hella Pressure, is out now, bolstered by the singles 'Boffum' and TWICE collaboration 'Superstars.' The five-track EP features production from figures like LunchMoney Lewis, P2J, and Grammy winner J. White. It's a small morsel to tide fans over as they await her first full-length project, first announced in 2020 as Pretty B***h Music. As time has gone on, however, Saweetie's ideas around her debut have shifted, to the point that she's considering ditching the title altogether. 'I honestly think that Pretty B***h Music has become a movement. I don't think it's going to be my album name anymore, but I'm not sure yet,' the rapper told Rolling Stone. 'I think that when I first had birthed that idea, I liked the ring to it, so I'm like, 'This is my album name.' But over the course of the years, I just feel like it's a lifestyle, it's an energy, it's a movement.' Focusing on crafting a sustainable career for herself has been paramount after hitting the ground running nearly a decade ago. As for the delays that have kept the album from the public, Saweetie told Allure last year that she's ensuring it's perfect before releasing it to the masses. 'To me, music is sacred. It's coming from your spirit. You can't just go finish an album in a week," she said. 'That's why it's taking me so long.' Now, looking ahead after Hella Pressure's release, she's using the EP as a springboard into what's next, more empowered than ever. 'I acknowledge the fact that I took some time to create music,' Saweetie confessed to Rolling Stone. 'Now that I'm really gearing myself to go back out into the scene, this is my way of saying all that pressure just made me stronger. The challenges, the tribulations, and my experiences made me the diamond I am today.'
