Access Advance Welcomes Global Technology Leaders as Licensees and Licensors to New Video Distribution Patent Pool

Business Wire2 days ago
BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Access Advance LLC ("Advance") today announced the inaugural roster of licensees and licensors for its Video Distribution Patent ("VDP") Pool, marking a significant milestone in the program's rapid market adoption since its January announcement. The participation of major global companies heavily involved in video codec technology demonstrates strong industry support for the comprehensive licensing solution covering HEVC, VVC, VP9, and AV1 codecs.
The licensees' participation provides immediate access to the wide-ranging patent portfolio while benefiting from the fixed tiered pricing structure designed to scale with business size.
The VDP Pool has successfully attracted a group of licensees/licensors including ByteDance, Kuaishou, NTT Docomo, and Tencent. This represents the beginning of what Access Advance expects to be widespread adoption among content streaming providers seeking simplified codec licensing. The licensees' participation provides immediate access to the wide-ranging patent portfolio while benefiting from the fixed tiered pricing structure designed to scale with business size.
"We're pleased to welcome ByteDance, Kuaishou, NTT Docomo and Tencent as our first VDP Pool licensees/licensors. Their commitment to the VDP program demonstrates the practical value of our one-stop-shop approach and the fact that the VDP program has successfully struck a balance between patent owners and implementers," said Peter Moller, CEO of Access Advance. "This milestone shows that the VDP Pool is delivering on its promise to provide simplicity and predictability for online video distributors, allowing them to focus on innovation and content delivery rather than complex patent negotiations."
The VDP Pool has also confirmed a large group of licensors representing a strong and substantial portfolio of standard essential patents for video codecs, positioning the pool to provide extensive intellectual property coverage for video streaming services. This initial group of patent owners includes the following internationally recognized technology leaders whose innovations are fundamental to modern video streaming infrastructure:
BlackBerry Limited
ByteDance
Dolby International AB
Dolby Laboratories, Inc.
Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute
Ewha University-Industry Collaboration Foundation
Hangzhou Boyun Technology Co., Ltd.

"The strong participation from major industry players and patent holders validates our approach and demonstrates that the VDP program is the preferred solution to the market's need for a unified licensing solution that balances the interest of patent owners and implementers," Moller added. "These licensors bring not only essential patent portfolios but also the credibility and scale necessary to make the VDP Pool the preferred licensing destination for streaming video providers globally."
The announcement comes as the industry increasingly seeks to license video codec patents directly to content streaming providers, who have benefited significantly from the use of patented, efficient video codecs. Access Advance's approach aims to provide broad access to patented technology while promoting continued innovation in video codec technologies.
Access Advance is in the process of finalizing agreements with several more licensors and licensees. More announcements will be made in the coming days and weeks. In addition, the VDP Pool rate structure has been posted to the Access Advance website (https://accessadvance.com/vdp-pool-royalty). The company encourages all internet video distributors and patent owners to learn more about the program, including available incentives and discounts, by contacting us at licensing@accessadvance.com.

Like Google, China's biggest search player Baidu is beefing up its product with AI to fight rivals

Chinese tech giant Baidu has bolstered its core search platform with artificial intelligence in the biggest overhaul of the product in 10 years. Analysts told CNBC the move was a bid to keep ahead of fast-moving rivals like DeepSeek, rather than traditional search players. "There has been some small pressure on the search business but the focus on AI and Ernie Bot is a key move ahead," Dan Ives, global head of tech research at Wedbush Securities, told CNBC by email. Ernie Bot is Baidu's AI chatbot. "Baidu is not waiting around to watch the paint dry, full steam ahead on AI," he added. Baidu is China's biggest search engine, but — as is also being seen by Google — the search market is being disrupted. Users are flocking instead to AI services such as ChatGPT or DeepSeek, which shocked the world this year with its advanced model it claimed was created at a fraction of the cost of rivals. But Kai Wang, Asia equity market strategist at Morningstar, also noted that short video platforms such as Douyin and Kuaishou are also getting into AI search and piling pressure on Baidu. To counter this, Baidu made some major changes to its core search product: "This is more aligned with how people use ChatGPT and DeepSeek in terms of how they look for answers," Wang said. Outside of China, Google has also been looking to enhance its core search product with AI, highlighting how search has been under pressure from the burgeoning technology. Baidu was one of China's first movers when it came to AI, releasing its first models and ChatGPT-style product Ernie Bot to the public in 2023. Since then, it has aggressively launched updated AI models. However, the Beijing-headquartered company has also faced intense competition from fellow tech giants like Alibaba and Tencent, as well as upstarts such as DeepSeek. These companies have also been launching new models and infusing AI into their products and Baidu's stock has fallen behind as a result. Baidu shares have risen around 2.5% this year, versus a 30.5% surge for Alibaba and a 20% rise for Tencent. "This is a defensive and offensive move ... Baidu needs to be aggressive and perception-wise show they are not the little brother to Tencent on the AI front," Wedbush Securities' Ives added.

TikTok lays off more employees working on TikTok Shop US

In Brief Despite all of the ads you're getting for collagen supplements and electric scrub brushes, TikTok Shop US is apparently not doing so hot. Per a report from Bloomberg, TikTok has conducted its third round of layoffs for this team since April, but has not disclosed how many jobs were impacted. TikTok Shop US, the company's e-commerce retailer, launched less than two years ago, selling a variety of products and offering creators commissions for their videos that trigger sales. While the Shop remains TikTok's fastest-growing business, TikTok's fate in the U.S. remains uncertain. President Trump has continued to delay the deadline for ByteDance to sell the app to an American entity, following TikTok's official ban. This weekend, however, Trump announced that he has a potential buyer for the app, which is rumored to include some familiar faces in VC.

A guide to using Edits, Meta's new CapCut rival for short-form video editing

Meta recently released a new video editing app for creators called Edits. The new app is designed to rival ByteDance's CapCut, a popular short-form video-editing app used by many creators. Meta first shared that it was working on Edits back in January after ByteDance-owned CapCut was removed from U.S. app stores when the TikTok ban momentarily went into effect. Although the app has since come back online and is available to download, TikTok's future in the U.S. remains uncertain, so Meta is ready to capitalize on CapCut's possible absence in the future with its new Edits app. We've created this guide to walk you through the app and the different features it offers, and we provide an overview of how it compares to CapCut. Edits is available to download on both iOS and Android. Once you download the app and open it, you will be asked to log in with your Instagram account. From there you will see five main tabs: Ideas, Inspiration, Projects, Record, and Insights. The Ideas tab offers creators a space to jot down ideas for new videos and save reels to a collection, and the Inspiration tab features a hub for discovering trending audios and other popular reels. The Projects tab is where creators can store and revisit the videos they currently have in progress. This tab is also where creators can upload videos from their phone's camera roll. The Record tab lets creators start filming video content right within Edits. Lastly, the Insights tab gives creators an overview of how their content is performing by surfacing metrics like views, reach, and follower counts. Green screen: Replace and edit the background of your videos with one tap. Timeline: Precisely arrange and adjust clips. Captions: Add automatic captions to your videos in multiple languages. Audio library: Add music from Instagram's library to your videos. Cutouts: Isolate specific objects with precision tracking. Animate: Turn static images into videos using AI. Apply all: Apply filters, effects, transitions, and adjustments to all of your clips at once. Timeline frame rate selector: Convert your video to the frame rate you want in order to enhance playback smoothness. Alignment guides: Ensure viewers can see the important parts of your video when posted and accurately position text, emoji, or other elements. Beat markers: Add auto-detected beat markers to help you align clips, text, and overlays with audio when editing. Filters: Choose from 30 different filter options to add a unique look to your videos. Transitions: Choose from 30 different transitions to connect different video clips in a seamless way. Teleprompter: Follow your written script while recording. Restyle: Use AI to change the look and style of your video with a library of presets. Keyframes: Animate the position, rotation, and scale of clips. While both Edits and CapCut are great options for editing short-form videos, there are some differences between the two services. CapCut offers more robust editing options, including AI features, than Edits does. Of course, this can be expected since Edits is a lot newer than CapCut. Meta will likely continue to build out Edits over the next months and years, so we can expect to see more advanced functionality in the future. It's also worth noting that CapCut has a more extensive music library compared to Edits. Another difference is the fact that Edits currently doesn't have a subscription offering (for now), but CapCut does. While CapCut offers a free version, some of its advanced tools are locked behind a paid subscription. Edits is free to use, but this will likely change in the future, as Instagram head Adam Mosseri has stated that later versions of Edits may include paid features. In addition, while CapCut is available on the web, Edits is mobile-only. However, this could change in the future. Update: This story originally ran in May and is updated regularly with new information.
