Electric car move that could save Aussies $1,500 as 'one big snag' revealed
Got a new set of wheels on your mind? Well, you're not alone. Over a third of Australians (38.1 per cent) plan to make a new car purchase in the next three years, according to new research from Compare the Market. The majority (56.5 per cent) are looking to buy a petrol or diesel car. But motorists willing to try a hybrid or EV may be able save close to a grand or more each year by avoiding the petrol pump and taking advantage of green loan offers. RELATED Electric vehicle warning as BYD records biggest month of sales in Australia Common neighbour problem plaguing Aussie houses Major inflation change following RBA's shock interest rate decision Compare the Market publishes its Australian Car Ownership Index each year to help motorists understand the cost of purchasing and keeping a car on the road by analysing three popular car models. This year's research shows motorists could save almost $1,000 by choosing a Toyota RAV4 Hybrid over a petrol-only Mitsubishi Outlander. Australians who opt for the full electric BYD Sealion 7 could save nearly $1,500 per year when charged at home on the average single tariff electricity plan. These are big, long-term cost-of-living wins if you are looking for a new car, and these are just fuel cost savings. Some car loan lenders offer discounted interest rates for certain hybrid and electric vehicles. The savings on interest achieved through a better rate could add up to hundreds or thousands of dollars over time. With nearly a third of motorists (28.1 per cent) planning to purchase their next car through a car loan, this could be an important consideration. ICE vs HEV vs BEV ownership cost comparison Mitsubishi Outlander Exceed AWD (ICE) Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Cruiser 2WD (HEV) BYD Sealion 7 Premium (BEV) Purchase price (upfront) $57,050 drive-away $55,088 drive-away $56,780 drive-away Car loan repayment (five-year term) $13,147 $12,379 $12,722 Annual servicing (average of first five visits) $340.00 $270.00 $351.40 Fuel/charging $2,247.75 $1,304.25 $778.08 Comprehensive car insurance (average) $1,827.10 $1,978.27 $1,840.25 Registration and CTP (QLD) $708.35 $708.35 $646.70 Total cost per year $18,270.40 $16,640.07 $16,338.83 Owning a car can be expensive, but choosing a more fuel-efficient hybrid or full electric model can help to significantly reduce some costs. With new brands delivering greater choice and supply of hybrids, I think more motorists will be looking to green vehicles as a cost-effective next-car option. Not only do EV owners save on petrol, they may also be eligible to take advantage of green loan offers from banks that can help reduce repayments and save on interest. Regular loan rates and green loan interest rates could vary as much as 2.5 per cent. If you're looking at a novated lease, eligible employees and business owners can take advantage of the government's fringe benefits tax exemption for select electric cars – which could mean saving hundreds in your back pocket. But there's one big snag all owners do need to look out for, and that's insurance. We found a difference of thousands of dollars between premiums for all three car models. Be sure to always shop around for a better deal — whether it's for fuel, electricity or car insurance. Don't park yourself into higher prices. Elon Musk fans flock to new Tesla Diner: See the opening day photos
Billionaire tech entrepreneur Elon Musk, who once called himself the "first buddy" of President Donald Trump, opened a futuristic restaurant called Tesla Diner and Drive-In in Hollywood, California, this week as fans waited for hours to see the intersection of technology and hospitality. Located in West Hollywood, the Tesla Diner is open 24 hours a day and features 80 charging stations. Customers can also watch movies on two 66-foot screens while an Optimus robot serves popcorn. Eric Greenspan, a Los Angeles-based chef, created the menu for the establishment, according to the Los Angeles Times. With a focus on classic comfort foods, the options include fried chicken and waffles, grilled cheese, tuna melts, alongside themed items like the "Tesla Burger" with "Electric Sauce." All-day breakfast options are also available, including avocado toast, biscuits and gravy, and house-made cinnamon rolls. According to LA Eater, diners can also order sides like wagyu beef chili cups, a market salad, and "epic" bacon. Musk first proposed the idea of combining a futuristic diner with a Tesla supercharger station back in 2018, tweeting, "Gonna put an old school drive-in, roller skates & rock restaurant at one of the new Tesla Supercharger locations in LA." Now that the idea has come to life, Musk said he hopes to establish more futuristic diners in major cities around the globe."If our retro-futuristic diner turns out well, which I think it will," tweeted Musk on July 19, "@Tesla will establish these in major cities around the world, as well as at Supercharger sites on long-distance routes."

Mercedes Gives Customers the One Thing They've Always Wanted: Microsoft Teams
Have you ever been driving along in your AMG GT63 and wondered aloud, 'You know what would make this car perfect? Microsoft Teams.' Well, wonder no more, because Mercedes-Benz has teamed up with Microsoft for a new suite of in-car technologies designed to make your work-life balance that much worse. The upcoming CLA will be the first Mercedes model with Microsoft Intune baked directly into its operating system, complete with the 365 Copilot generative AI assistant and the aforementioned Microsoft Teams with an Enhanced Meetings function. With Enhanced Meetings, drivers will actually be able to stream video of themselves while on the move (in countries that allow it). Oh, joy . They won't be able to see shared screens or slides of other participants for safety reasons, and the system will turn off automatically as soon as the meeting ends. Drivers will also be able to see upcoming meetings via a new calendar function. The expanded voice chat system, meanwhile, will allow you to answer work DMs while on the go. Mercedes says the Microsoft partnership turns your car into a "third workspace"—a term only the saviest dystopian novelists could have dreamed up. Just look at how much fun you can have! Naturally, you will have to pay extra for many of these features as part of the Entertainment Package Plus, which includes a full data plan. Mercedes hasn't listed pricing just yet, but we can't imagine it will be cheap. The CLA will be the first Mercedes model with the new Microsoft suite, and the technology will roll out initially in markets like the US and Europe before expanding to more regions. We also expect the entire Mercedes lineup to adopt the technology at some point. That means, soon, everyone will be taking meetings on the go. Just the future we've always dreamed of.
