US, China to resume tariff talks in effort to extend truce
By David Lawder STOCKHOLM (Reuters) -Senior U.S. and Chinese negotiators meet in Stockholm on Monday to tackle longstanding economic disputes at the centre of the countries' trade war, aiming to extend a truce keeping sharply higher tariffs at bay. China is facing an August 12 deadline to reach a durable tariff agreement with President Donald Trump's administration, after Beijing and Washington reached a preliminary deal in June to end weeks of escalating tit-for-tat tariffs. Without an agreement, global supply chains could face renewed turmoil from duties exceeding 100%. The Stockholm talks, led by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng, take place a day after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen meets Trump at his golf course in Scotland to try to clinch a deal that would likely see a 15% baseline tariff on most EU goods. Trade analysts on both sides of the Pacific say the discussions in the Swedish capital are unlikely to produce any breakthroughs but could prevent further escalation and help create conditions for Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping to meet later this year. Previous U.S.-China trade talks in Geneva and London in May and June focused on bringing U.S. and Chinese retaliatory tariffs down from triple-digit levels and restoring the flow of rare earth minerals halted by China and Nvidia H20 AI chips and other goods halted by the United States. So far, the talks have not delved into broader economic issues. They include U.S. complaints that China's state-led, export-driven model is flooding world markets with cheap goods, and Beijing's complaints that U.S. national security export controls on tech goods seek to stunt Chinese growth. "Stockholm will be the first meaningful round of U.S.-China trade talks," said Bo Zhengyuan, Shanghai-based partner at China consultancy firm Plenum. DEALS, DEALS, DEALS Trump has been successful in pressuring some other trading partners, including Japan, Vietnam and the Philippines, into deals accepting higher U.S. tariffs of 15% to 20%. He said there was a 50-50 chance that the U.S. and the 27-member European Union could also reach a framework trade pact, adding that Brussels wanted to "make a deal very badly". Two of Trump's top trade officials, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, will attend the Scotland talks and then travel to Stockholm. Analysts say the U.S.-China negotiations are far more complex and will require more time. China's grip on the global market for rare earth minerals and magnets, used in everything from military hardware to car windshield wiper motors, has proved to be an effective leverage point on U.S. industries. TRUMP-XI MEETING? In the background of the talks is speculation about a possible meeting between Trump and Xi in late October. Trump has said he will decide soon whether to visit China in a landmark trip to address trade and security tensions. A new flare-up of tariffs and export controls would likely derail any plans for a meeting with Xi. "The Stockholm meeting is an opportunity to start laying the groundwork for a Trump visit to China," said Wendy Cutler, vice president at the Asia Society Policy Institute. Bessent has already said he wants to work out an extension of the August 12 deadline to prevent tariffs snapping back to 145% on the U.S. side and 125% on the Chinese side. Still, China will likely request a reduction of multi-layered U.S. tariffs totaling 55% on most goods and further easing of U.S. high-tech export controls, analysts said. Beijing has argued that such purchases would help reduce the U.S. trade deficit with China, which reached $295.5 billion in 2024. China is currently facing a 20% tariff related to the U.S. fentanyl crisis, a 10% reciprocal tariff, and 25% duties on most industrial goods imposed during Trump's first term. Bessent has also said he would discuss with He the need for China to rebalance its economy away from exports toward domestic consumer demand. The shift would require China to put an end to a protracted property crisis and boost social safety nets to encourage household spending. Michael Froman, a former U.S. trade representative during Barack Obama's administration, said such a shift has been a goal of U.S. policymakers for two decades. "Can we effectively use tariffs to get China to fundamentally change their economic strategy? That remains to be seen," said Froman, now president of the Council on Foreign Relations think-tank. Scientists develop revolutionary method to keep dangerous toxins out of rivers and lakes: 'It holds strong potential'
Scientists develop revolutionary method to keep dangerous toxins out of rivers and lakes: 'It holds strong potential' Scientists have created a new water treatment material that can more efficiently purify water for release and extract phosphorus for industrial purposes. According to research on the revolutionary material, published in Springer Nature, the researchers propose the use of "urchin-like La/Cu-Fe3O4 nanocapsules featuring perpendicular La/Cu nanosheets surrounding an Fe3O4 nanosphere core." The material can efficiently remove phosphorus from wastewater to ensure it's pure enough to be released into rivers and lakes. Wastewater must be treated before release, and much of that process involves removing phosphorus, which causes green algae growth, and disinfecting microorganisms like total coliform. The new material accomplishes both highly efficiently. And, the retrieved phosphorus is a valuable industrial material used to make fertilizers, cleaning agents, and detergents. According to TechXplore, the system operates without electricity by using a magnetic field to move the material with precision. This reduces energy consumption by over 99% compared to traditional treatment methods, decreasing energy costs and carbon emissions. "The key to our research is the rapid recovery of phosphorus from sea urchin structural materials and the implementation of a process that precisely controls particles in water with magnetic fields," said Dr. Youngkyun Jung, first author of the study, per TechXplore. The treatment can be implemented in water purification plants, sewage treatment plants, and industrial wastewater treatment sites. The treated water can be used in precision agriculture, smart farms, eco-friendly industrial parks, and public water and sewage systems, helping to improve water security. "It holds strong potential for future expansion into multifunctional water treatment platforms," Jung explained, per TechXplore. This incredible technology can reduce the cost and time it takes to properly treat water for release or recycling. It could work with emergency purification systems for natural disasters, mobile facilities for underdeveloped countries, and portable water treatment devices. This would make water more accessible and affordable to those in need, reducing water scarcity around the world. On top of helping people get usable water, the technology also helps the planet. It ensures harmful materials — like the microorganisms in wastewater — don't pollute lakes and rivers. The eco-friendly system will reduce planet-warming emissions created during the treatment process, helping work toward a cleaner, cooler future. The material has been successfully tested in labs, so the next step is likely further development and eventually pilot projects. How concerned are you about the plastic waste in our oceans? Will Klarna SPAC or IPO in 2025?
Key Points Klarna, which offers buy now, pay later plans, has seen impressive growth in its revenue and customer base. It paused plans to go public in April after the Trump administration announced sweeping import tariffs. An IPO could still happen this year, but Klarna stock will likely be volatile, especially in the early going. These 10 stocks could mint the next wave of millionaires › Investors have been eagerly waiting Klarna's public listing. The Swedish fintech company, most famous for offering buy now, pay later (BNPL) services, has about 100 million active consumers across 26 countries. Klarna was close to becoming a publicly traded company earlier this year until the Trump administration announced import tariffs on "Liberation Day." If you're wondering whether you'll be able to invest in Klarna in 2025, here's what's known. Klarna's IPO is on hold Klarna filed its prospectus for an initial public offering (IPO) in March of this year and planned to go public in April. Those plans changed at the last minute after President Trump announced sweeping import tariffs. Due to the economic uncertainty and the stock market sell-off, Klarna paused its IPO. Klarna hasn't announced a new IPO date yet and is reportedly planning to wait until after the summer, according to a report from Dagens Industri, a Swedish financial newspaper. However, management hasn't confirmed that timeline. The way Klarna will go public is confirmed; it will hold a traditional IPO. It won't use a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC), a shell company that goes public and then seeks out a merger with a private company. While SPAC IPOs have been growing in popularity, Klarna ruled out that option years ago. Will Klarna be a good investment opportunity? Klarna has been successful as a BNPL company -- it's the fourth largest in terms of U.S. users, according to Statista -- but it faces concerns about its business model and financial losses. BNPL companies are heavily reliant on the economy and interest rates. When the economy is strong, consumers are more willing to finance discretionary purchases through services like Klarna. During downturns, people tighten up their spending. Interest rates also impact BNPL companies by increasing their funding costs, especially since these companies normally offer interest-free plans. Klarna's revenue has been steadily growing, jumping 24% to $2.8 billion in 2024. Net profit was $21 million, a 109% improvement from 2023, when the company posted a net loss of $244 million. However, it was only profitable because of a net gain of $171 million related to its sale of Klarna Checkout. Klarna was back to losing money in 2025's first quarter, with a net loss of $99 million, a 110% year-over-year increase. That said, you could make a compelling bull case for Klarna. Its customer base is growing rapidly (18% year over year as of Q1 2025), and so is the number of merchants who accept Klarna (up 27% year over year). Klarna is also expanding its offerings. Last month, Klarna and Visa (NYSE: V) launched a debit card that lets cardholders pay in full upfront or use pay later options, and Klarna announced it's launching wireless service plans, like fellow fintech companies Revolut and Nubank have done. Another area in which Klarna has shown promise is the incorporation of artificial intelligence (AI) technology. It started a collaboration with OpenAI in 2023 to incorporate Klarna shopping results into ChatGPT answers. Klarna has also leveraged AI to cut costs. It estimates that AI is responsible for about $10 million per year in savings on sales and marketing spending. Klarna will likely go public in the near future Investors probably won't need to wait too much longer for Klarna to be available on the stock market. Polymarket, a prediction platform, currently has the odds of a 2025 Klarna IPO at 75%. There have also been several successful IPOs since the stock market turmoil in April, including Circle (NYSE: CRCL) and Chime (NASDAQ: CHYM), which could convince Klarna's management to take the plunge. Stocks can be volatile in the early days, so even when Klarna goes public, you may want to exercise patience before buying any shares. For a potential point of comparison, investors can look at Affirm (NASDAQ: AFRM), a BNPL company that completed its IPO in 2021. In its first year on the market, it went through several wild price swings. It's currently (as of July 23) 61% off the all-time high it reached in November 2021. IPO stocks can be good long-term investments, but the hype surrounding them sometimes leads to overvaluations. If you're thinking about investing in Klarna, estimate a fair price for it before the IPO and use that to decide whether to buy early or wait for the initial hysteria to wear off.
