China removes senior general, naval chief & top scientist in military
The purge of China's powerful defence and security establishment continued as top military officials, including a senior general, chief of navy and a nuclear scientist, were expelled from the national legislature on Friday.
General Miao Hua along with Vice Admiral Li Hanjun, chief of staff of the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN), and Liu Shipeng, deputy chief engineer of China National Nuclear Corporation, have been removed from the National People's Congress (NPC), the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post reported.
Li is the latest of a string of PLA generals and a handful of defence industry executives to have been implicated in a sweeping crackdown in the military, the Post reported.
Both have been stripped of their membership of the legislature, the report said.
State-run Xinhua news agency reported that the standing committee of the NPC, which concluded its session here on Friday, also voted to remove top General Miao Hua from his position as a member of the Central Military Commission (CMC), the overall high command of the Chinese military, headed by President Xi Jinping.
Miao, the youngest general in the Chinese military hierarchy, has been under probe for serious violations of discipline since November last year. He was dismissed from the NPC in April this year.
Miao was also director of the Political Work Department of the CMC, a role critical in managing Communist Party ideology and personnel changes within the People's Liberation Army (PLA).
His career advanced significantly after Xi assumed power, leading to roles in the Chinese Navy as a political commissar and eventually becoming the PLA's youngest admiral.
The defence ministry said Miao was being investigated for suspected serious violations of discipline, a phrase used as a euphemism for corruption.
Since he took over power towards the end of 2012, 72-year-old Xi has carried out massive purges in the country's over two-million-strong military, removing or punishing dozens of senior generals for corruption and indiscipline.
Those who were punished included two defence ministers as Xi consolidated his hold on the armed forces and the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC).
Xi has repeatedly emphasised the importance of party loyalty among PLA officials to strengthen ideological control and support China's goal of becoming a military superpower.
Miao is the second CMC member to be removed from his position since the current leadership took office in 2022.

Kalyani family feud escalates: Baba Kalyani's sister Sugandha alleges asset grab by younger brother
Pune: Sugandha Hiremath , sister of industrialist Baba Kalyani , on Friday accused her younger brother Gaurishankar Kalyani of usurping ancestral properties in Karad, Maharashtra, as part of an ongoing legal battle over the division of Kalyani family assets in a Pune court . In an affidavit, Sugandha claimed she has uncovered evidence that two large family-owned properties in Karad were transferred to Gaurishankar, allegedly using a power of attorney (POA) granted by their late father Neelkanth Kalyani. The affidavit states that legal disputes over these properties, filed earlier by their father, are still pending in a Karad court. The allegations are part of a suit filed by Sugandha, her husband Jaidev Hiremath, and their two children, seeking partition of the Kalyani family assets to claim their share of the Kalyani Hindu Undivided Family (HUF) assets. The disputed assets include stakes in Kalyani group flagship Bharat Forge along with other listed and privately held companies as well as properties across the country. Sugandha has sought an injunction restraining her brothers from alienating any family assets, including promoter shares of about 250 group companies, until the case is resolved. Sha has also sought a directive for both her brothers to disclose the full list of family properties. Live Events In an earlier hearing in March, the court had observed that, given the family relationships, nature of the suit, and pendency of related proceedings, it would be appropriate to hear all parties before issuing any interim orders. In Friday's hearing, Sugandha's counsels alleged that Gaurishankar concealed information about the properties in Karad and ongoing disputes in courts there. The partition suit is now slated to come up for hearing on July 22. The Pune-based Kalyani Group, led by Baba Kalyani, is a multinational conglomerate with interests in engineering, automotive components, specialty chemicals, and renewable energy.

‘Adulterated' fuel grounds 19 SUVs of CM's convoy in Ratlam
Indore: Nineteen SUVs, a part of Madhya Pradesh chief minister 's cavalcade sourced to ferry VIPs from an airstrip to an industrial conclave venue in Ratlam on Friday came to a screeching halt on Thursday night after refilling 'adulterated fuel' from a petrol pump in Dosigaon. The Ratlam district administration on learning about the incident immediately ordered a probe into the incident and sealed the petrol pump and booked its owner. Chief minister Mohan Yadav and VIPs were supposed to arrive at the airstrip in Ratlam on Friday morning and were supposed to be taken to the venue in vehicles that were sourced from an Indore-based travel agent. The agency sent the vehicles 15 hours before the CM's arrival and got it refuelled. "Apparently, diesel mixed with water was filled in the vehicles at the petrol pump. The vehicles got stranded and were being repaired," naib tehsildar Ashish Upadhyay, who rushed to the spot to inspect the petrol pump, told reporters. All the vehicles stopped moving soon after refuelling. A driver, Shubham Parmar, said that it was unprecedented to find water in diesel.
