Hidden performances and theories supported as cup final stats emerge

AS the sporting saying goes, there is only one stat that really matters – the scoreline.
And as we all now know, that all-important figure ended up agonisingly against Warrington Wolves in Saturday's Challenge Cup Final as they saw what would have been a memorable victory snatched away in the dying seconds.

However, more statistics that have emerged in the aftermath of the game lend weight to the theory touted by Wire boss Sam Burgess and indeed many observers – that the better, more dominant team on the day ended up on the losing side.
In total, Warrington were in possession of the ball for 30mins 53secs and of that time, just under half (13mins 41secs) was spent in the Hull KR half.
Indeed, they had the ball within 20 metres of the Robins' try line for 6mins 41secs in total. By contrast, Rovers enjoyed 3mins 59secs of ball inside the Wire 20.
Their total territory figure for the game was 53 per cent and they actually increased the amount of territory they had in the second half to 55 per cent having been at 51 per cent before the interval while they also edged the completion rate statistics – they finished 83 per cent of their sets compared to KR's 79 per cent.
The hidden performances in a brave team effort
Marc Sneyd will deservedly get the plaudits in terms of individual displays having won the Lance Todd Trophy for the third time in his career.

He was clearly the game's standout player but from a Warrington perspective, there were a few other performances that went more under the radar.
Upon his return to the side from injury, Toby King again showed how reliable and effective he is in coming away from his own try line – his 194m gained from 22 carries was a figure bettered by only three players from either side who passed the 200m mark.
Hull KR winger Tom Davies – the scorer of the game's winning try – led the metre-making charts with 241 ahead of Wire full-back Matt Dufty (235) and his Robins counterpart Jack Broadbent (231).
However, King's 89m gained post-contact and six tackle breaks are the highest figure of any player from either side on the day.

Luke Yates, too, put in a superb display on both sides of the ball as he produced arguably his best performance since joining The Wire midway through last season.
The 125m he gained with the ball from 13 carries was the highest of any Wire forward – Ben Currie (117) and Paul Vaughan (115) were just behind him – and only Robins bulldozer Kelepi Tanginoa (132) could boast a better figure among the opposition.
In defence, though, he was faultless as he completed 35 tackles without a single miss while none of his tackles were deemed ineffective in Opta's stats.
Yates had the highest figure of the three players to enjoy 100 per cent tackle completion rates, with teammate James Harrison (26) and Hull KR's Sauaso Sue (25) being the others.

Currie and Adam Holroyd jointly topped Wire's tackle charts – both recorded 43 with a single miss – followed by Sam Powell (36 with three misses).
For the game as a whole, KR skipper Elliot Minchella led the way with an exceptional 57 tackles while two of his teammates also cleared the 50-tackle mark – Dean Hadley and Jai Whitbread both made 53.

Great-grandson fights to honour Southampton football hero

A great-grandson is fighting to see a Saints legend recognised in football history. Ted Drake, the Southampton-born striker who became an Arsenal legend, has narrowly missed out on entry to the National Football Museum's Hall of Fame in Manchester. Advertisement Drake, who played for Saints from 1931 to 1934 before joining Arsenal, has been described by his great-grandson Liam Harding as "arguably one of the greatest players to play the game in his time." Liam, who put forward the nomination, said: "It's really disappointing that my Great Grandfather was denied nomination into the Footballers Hall of Fame. "He is arguably one of the greatest players to play the game in his time alongside the likes of Stanley Matthews, Alex James, Nat Lofthouse etc who are all in the Hall of Fame where he belongs also. "He inspired millions of people and no man since has scored more goals in an English top-flight game of football. Advertisement "It's essential for the history of the game and its supporters that his name is remembered on a national scale for eternity in the Footballers Hall of Fame where he deserves to be for the feats he set." READ MORE: Franny Benali to join event helping older adults at St Mary's Stadium Drake passed the initial stage of the selection process but fell short in the second round. He will automatically be considered again during the next round of nominations in October. During his time at Arsenal, Drake set several records, including scoring seven goals in a single top-flight match on December 14, 1935. Advertisement He remains Arsenal's fastest player to reach 100 goals, achieving the milestone in just 108 games. He also holds the record for most goals in a single season for the club, with 44. After injury ended his playing career, Drake moved into management and led Chelsea to their first league title in 1955. He became the first person to win the English top flight as both a player and a manager. Liam has dedicated much of this year to preserving his great-grandfather's legacy. In February, he worked with Arsenal to install a memorial plaque at Highbury, where Drake's ashes have rested since 1995. He hopes that Drake, currently Arsenal's fifth-highest all-time goalscorer with 139 goals, will be recognised in the next round of Hall of Fame nominations.

'Perfect transition' - Lambert backs Lallana to 'become an excellent coach'

LEGEND Rickie Lambert has backed Adam Lallana to become "an excellent coach" after his permanent appointment to Southampton's coaching staff. Lallana, 37, has joined Will Still's backroom team as first-team coach following his playing retirement at the end of the 2024/25 season. Advertisement The academy graduate made nearly 300 appearances for Southampton, returning for an ill-fated campaign before hanging up his boots. Lambert, who dubbed his former England teammate Lallana "the best player I've played with", thinks the ex-midfielder is making the "perfect transition". Speaking on BBC Radio Solent, Lambert recalled a meeting dictated by Lallana, which saw Saints turn around their poor Premier League form. Asked what leadership skills stood out most in his time with Lallana, Lambert explained: 'The determination not to lose and the courage to speak out when needed. Advertisement Adam Lallana (centre left) and Rickie Lambert (far right) celebrate after winning the JPT. 'On more than one occasion during meetings, if there was something that needed to be said, Adam would say it to the manager or one of the lads. 'Many times at halftime, before the manager got to say anything, Adam would be the first one to tell them, clearly, what was wrong and what needed to happen. 'He was always spot on. He had an excellent football brain. There was one moment in particular, going into the Premier League. 'We were struggling to get a point on the board, and we had a meeting. He confronted the coaching staff about the way we were playing. Advertisement 'He was very determined, listening to every player who expressed their opinion. It went on for two hours, but it was the best thing that ever happened to us. 'We went out of that meeting with clarity, which we all needed, and then we started to pick up points. That's what he's capable of.' He added: 'I think he will go on now and become an excellent coach. If you lose the identity of your team, you are in trouble. Adam Lallana barks instructions at Saints players ahead of a Premier League fixture.'What Southampton had going up the leagues was a core of players who believed in the Southampton way. That was kind of lost. Advertisement 'They brought players in, and they were brilliant, but once you keep doing that, you lose the Southampton way. Adam is there now and in a strong position. 'He's one of the main coaches, and he is going to be making it clear that if you join this club, you are joining because you love it. 'He will make sure that each player is giving 100 per cent. Will Still needs players like Ads who have played in the Premier League. 'The way he planned his last couple of years, getting closer to home and then finishing at Southampton, sounded perfect for me. 'He got a little taste for coaching last year, which would have given him a real taste of it. It's a perfect transition going into coaching at his beloved Saints."
