‘Unrecognizable odor' causes Covington Middle School to evacuate
According to school officials, around 2:15 p.m. on Friday, an 'unrecognizable odor' was detected prompting an orderly evacuation of students and staff as a safety precaution.
'We are very, very pleased by the swift action of many community members to cooperate and help us get our students home under unusual circumstances,' said Kim Halterman and Melinda Snead-Johnson, leaders of Alleghany Highlands Public Schools.
Flu-like illnesses force three schools into multiple-day closures
The decision was advised by the Covington Department of Public Works and students were relocated to the Covington Recreation Center near the school.
The origin of the odor remains under investigation.
'Our staff will always prioritize student safety. We are thankful for our community's trust and understanding especially when we must take action to evacuate while also messaging families about details surrounding situations like these. We work diligently to keep students safe, and families informed,' Halterman and Snead-Johnson added.

Lizzo Just Shared Everything She Eats in a Day for Weight Loss
Reviewed by Dietitian Emily Lachtrupp, M.S., RD Lizzo is back with new music, releasing her mixtape My Face Hurts from Smiling this summer. And through her press tour for the drop, the rapper and singer has been open about her recent weight loss. Earlier this year, Lizzo shared in an Instagram post that she had 'achieved her weight goal' and lost 16% of her body fat since starting her weight loss journey in 2023. And in a recent interview with Women's Health, the star went into the specifics about what she eats in a day to help her feel her best. In a previous interview on the Just Trish podcast, Lizzo also revealed that she doesn't use GLP-1 medication, though she's tried it in the past. From meals to snacks, here's what Lizzo eats every day to stay fueled and satisfied. Plus more on why she transitioned away from a vegan diet, and what a dietitian thinks. For breakfast, the Grammy winner keeps it simple with protein-packed picks. 'I eat a savory breakfast, so for instance this morning, I had two scrambled eggs and a cup of piping hot bone broth with Celtic sea salt in it,' Lizzo explains. 'It was fabulous, it's one of my favorite breakfasts.' Eggs are an energizing protein that is a classic option for breakfast. And bone broth also offers protein, and drinking a warm beverage first thing in the morning (could also be tea, coffee or warm water) is a gut-friendly way to promote healthy digestion. Lizzo says she used to have a salad for lunch every day—but now, she likes including more carbs in her meal for a midday pick-me-up. This includes a sandwich or a rice bowl. We think that Lizzo would also love some of our satiating salad recipes like our Chopped Salad with Chickpeas, Olives & Feta or our Green Goddess Salad. The singer notes that because she has GERD, she likes to eat dinner by 5 p.m. to help mitigate late-night symptoms like acid reflux and gas. And for dinner, she focuses on getting enough protein to round out her day. 'I love a soup,' she exclaims. 'I come from a soup family…I would do a chicken-vegetable soup for dinner typically because it's packed with vegetables, it's packed with protein, it has a nice, warm, relaxing broth and it puts your a** right to bed.' Honestly, we can't fight any of those claims. Soup is a great option for dinner as it's completely customizable, and adding your favorite protein and veggies basically guarantees it to be a satisfying, fibrous meal. Based on her preferences, we want Lizzo to try our Slow-Cooker Chicken & Vegetable Noodle Soup ASAP. And for snacks throughout the day, Lizzo opts for healthy choices like hard-boiled eggs, tuna salad with saltine crackers or a simple lettuce wrap. But she admits that the *truth hurts* because her favorite snack options aren't the most nutrient-dense. She specifically loves Red Hot Blues tortilla chips with hummus and says she could eat a whole bag. While a bag of chips isn't her go-to choice now, she doesn't restrict herself from enjoying her faves once in a while. 'If your body wants salty, crunchy chips, go eat some chips or go eat a pickle,' she says. 'If your body wants sweet, eat the damn cookie. If your body wants bread, eat the bread, [and] if your body wants butter, eat the butter.' At EatingWell, we fully agree with Lizzo's take that any foods can be included in a healthy eating pattern when done in moderation. While Lizzo used to follow a vegan diet, she now includes meat in her eating pattern. She explains why in this recent interview. 'There were a lot of things that led to me returning to eating animal protein. One of them was just how I felt,' she says. 'It was a long journey, but I think that it was based on a feeling. I had a period where I had very low energy, and I had a period where I was experiencing a lot of stomach pain and stomach issues.' She received recommendations from her trainer to incorporate animal protein into her diet again, and she 'slowly' made the transition back to eating meat. We asked our senior nutrition editor and registered dietitian Jessica Ball, M.S., RD for her thoughts on Lizzo's diet switch, and here's what she had to say. 'I think it's great that Lizzo has made her diet less restrictive and focused on what works for her and helps her feel her best. When it comes to weight loss (or any health goal), consistency is crucial and including foods you enjoy helps make that more realistic,' shares Ball. 'While protein is super important, fiber often gets overlooked. I think that adding sources of fiber—like berries to her breakfast or whole grains to her lunch—would help up the fiber content of her meals. And there's nothing wrong with having both veggies and chips with hummus as a snack!' Overall, we think that Lizzo's current high-protein eating pattern is sustainable and includes healthy choices to keep her satisfied. Honestly, we'd say it sounds *good as hell*, and we may just have to follow her lead and whip up some chicken soup for dinner. Read the original article on EATINGWELL

Boston Scientific halves expected tariff hit
This story was originally published on MedTech Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily MedTech Dive newsletter. By the numbers Q2 sales: $5.06 billion 22.8% growth year over year Cardiovascular sales: $3.35 billion 26.8% growth year over year Electrophysiology: $840 million 96.1% growth year over year Boston Scientific on Wednesday halved its expected tariff charge for the year, following other medtech companies that have cut outlooks on financial impacts from the Trump administration's policies. CFO Jonathan Monson told investors during a second-quarter earnings call that the company now expects a tariff charge of approximately $100 million. Boston Scientific forecast a charge of approximately $200 million during a first-quarter call in April; however, the company signaled at an investor event in May that it would likely update its forecast. Boston Scientific is the latest medtech firm to lower expected costs related to tariffs after companies across the industry projected that they would absorb hundreds of millions of dollars in additional costs during first-quarter earnings calls. Johnson & Johnson similarly halved its expected hit to $200 million, exclusively related to the company's medtech business, and Abbott said last week that it expects a $200 million charge, compared with a charge of 'a few hundred million.' The company expects the $100 million impact to predominantly take hold in the second half of the year. Boston Scientific increased its full-year sales guidance as part of the company's earnings release. It now expects sales growth for the year in a range of 18% to 19%, compared with a prior range of 15% to 17%. PFA success continues Boston Scientific reported another strong quarter for its electrophysiology group as pulsed field ablation devices continue to boost companies' portfolios. While not the triple-digit growth Boston Scientific has reported in prior quarters, its electrophysiology group still grew by 96% year over year to $840 million. Boston Scientific is growing the use of its Farapulse PFA system in new markets like Japan and China. CEO Mike Mahoney told investors that Boston Scientific was third to market in Japan, specifically, but is now the 'clear market leader' in the country. Mahoney added that the company is also in the 'very, very early days' in China and is placing a lot of emphasis on what could be a large market opportunity. The CEO also emphasized that Boston Scientific is growing its future PFA offerings through internal investment, as well as through its venture capital portfolio and partnerships. The company also recently won an expanded indication for Farapulse in people with persistent atrial fibrillation, when an abnormal heart rhythm continues for at least seven days, widening the pool of patients who are eligible for treatment. Boston Scientific's continued success comes amid a reignited race for market share in the PFA space. The new atrial fibrillation treatment is quickly overtaking traditional treatments like cryoablation and radiofrequency ablation. Johnson & Johnson reported last week that its electrophysiology business returned to growth in the second quarter, largely due to further PFA adoption. The unit grew year over year by 11%. Tim Schmid, J&J's worldwide chairman of medtech, told investors on an earnings call that the company is not 'rolling over' when it comes to electrophysiology. 'Given that we created the [electrophysiology] category, for us, this one is very personal,' Schmid said. 'And while I know that several analysts were quick to write us off earlier this year, we continue to remain very confident in our ability to retain our global market leadership position over the long term.' Mahoney, on Wednesday's call, was similarly bullish on Boston Scientific's ambitions in electrophysiology. 'We not only want to be the clear leader [in] PFA,' Mahoney said, 'but our aim is to be the overall leader in [electrophysiology] in the future.' Indiana Fever release statement updating Caitlin Clark injury status
The Indiana Fever provided an important injury update for their star point guard on Thursday. Caitlin Clark has missed the last two regular-season games and the All-Star game with a right groin injury. It's the third different soft tissue injury Clark has dealt with this season, leading to her being in and out of the lineup all year long. Clark has already been ruled out for Thursday night's game against the Las Vegas Aces, and the Fever provided an update on her injury and recovery process on Thursday. In a statement released on X, the Fever put out a highly-anticipated update on Clark's injury and the additional testing that happened earlier this week. "Caitlin Clark underwent further medical evaluations earlier this week, which confirmed that no additional injuries or damage were discovered. Clark will continue working with the medical team on her recovery and rehabilitation, with the priority on her long-term health and well-being. There is no timetable available for her return," the Fever's statement read. It's good and bad news for the star guard. It's great that the testing from earlier this week found no additional injuries. Now, the Fever and Clark know they're just dealing with that right groin injury and can put together a treatment and recovery plan based on that. The bad news is that there is still no timetable for Clark's return as of now. While this isn't surprising news, as that treatment plan is probably still being worked on, it's unfortunate for the rest of the team and the fans that Clark's return timeline is still up in the air. The most important thing for Clark and the Fever is her long-term health, as mentioned in the statement released by the team. If keeping her out of game action for a while ensures she fully recovers, then that's the right move for all parties. In the meantime, the Fever will have to find ways to win games without their point guard, which has proved to be a challenge this season. They're 4-7 without Clark this season, including the Commissioner's Cup final, and they're 9-5 with her playing. Indiana (12-12) continues their season on Thursday when they host the Las Vegas Aces (12-11). Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT on Amazon Prime Video.
