FRIM, Perlis Forestry Partner To Boost Economic Value Of Teak
FRIM director-general Datuk Dr Ismail Parlan said these downstream products, derived from teak plantations, contribute directly to environmental sustainability efforts, in line with the designation of FRIM's Mata Ayer Research Station (SPF) as a biological site within the Perlis Geopark.
'FRIM remains committed to promoting Perlis teak locally and internationally. Under this partnership, we have organised various programmes involving state agencies, associations, and local entrepreneurs to unlock the economic value of teak plantations,' he said.
He was speaking at the launch of the 'Pasar Geowarisan Se-Jati 2025' at Teak Eco Park, SPF Mata Ayer, officiated by the Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail here today.
Ismail said since the station's establishment in 1974, it has focused on research and development (R&D) of forest plantations, especially teak.
'In support of state efforts to promote ecotourism, FRIM and JPNPs rebranded the station as Teak Eco Park, now serving as a teak reference centre and eco-attraction in Perlis,' he said.
He said FRIM continues to enhance the branding of teak-based products by building a strong market reputation.
Initiatives like the 'Royal Perlis Jati Craft' and the push for Geographical Indication (GI) status are expected to increase the value and marketability of Perlis teak products, he added.
'The Pasar Geowarisan Se-Jati 2025 is part of this ongoing effort and has been included in the 2025 State Tourism Calendar.

Preserve national unity and peace for independence, urges Ewon
PENAMPANG: Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick has called on Malaysians, particularly in Sabah, to uphold the true meaning of independence by preserving unity, well-being, and peace. He emphasised that harmony and stability are crucial for sustainable national development and sovereignty. 'This all starts with cooperation, unity, and harmony because if the people are at odds with one another, unable to cooperate or be in harmony, how can national sovereignty be defended?' Ewon said after launching the Sabah Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang 2025 convoy. The event, organised by the Sabah Information Department, involves 20 vehicles and 60 participants covering 2,500 kilometres across 75 locations in 20 days. The convoy began in Penampang and will conclude in Tuaran on Aug 23. Ewon encouraged Sabahans to join the 'One House, One Jalur Gemilang' initiative by displaying the national flag at their homes. He also highlighted the relevance of this year's National Day theme, 'Malaysia MADANI, Rakyat Disantuni,' aligning it with the 13th Malaysia Plan's goals of uplifting the people's dignity. Google offers to blur sensitive sites on its map amid Seoul's security concerns
SEOUL: (Bernama-Yonhap) Google said Tuesday (Aug 5) it will blur sensitive sites on its map and satellite image services to address Seoul's national security concerns ahead of its decision this week on whether to allow the overseas transfer of high‑precision map data, Yonhap News Agency reported. "Just like in other countries, we respect national security and are working closely with the Korean government to protect it," Google Korea said in a statement posted on its blog, citing Cris Turner, vice‑president for government affairs and public policy at Google. "We have already confirmed our commitment with the Korean government to blur satellite images as required, and will be exploring acquiring imagery from approved Korean third parties where appropriate," the company added. The post came just days before a government panel is set to decide whether to approve Google's request to export South Korea's 1:5,000‑scale high‑precision map data. The panel meeting is slated for Friday. In February, the US tech giant submitted an application to the state‑run National Geographic Information Institute (NGII), seeking approval for the transfer of 1:5,000‑scale map data to its data centres abroad. The proposal has sparked a heated debate due to concerns that the export of detailed map data could expose military bases and other sensitive facilities. South Korea remains technically at war with North Korea, as the Korean War ended in a truce, not a peace treaty. Google emphasised that the 1:5,000‑scale map data is a public "national base map," approved by the NGII and already used by most domestic mapping services in Korea. "To handle the millions of simultaneous requests from users worldwide, including those researching travel from outside Korea, Google must rely on its globally distributed data centres for smooth, real‑time processing," the company said. "This technological necessity is why we are applying for permission to run the 1:5,000‑scale national base map through our distributed data centres." Google previously made similar requests in 2007 and 2016, but both were rejected by the South Korean government due to security concerns.
