Mining Graft Case: Two Sabah Reps, Businessman To Be Charged Today
KOTA KINABALU, June 30 (Bernama) -- Two Sabah assemblymen and a businessman will be charged in the Sessions Court today in connection with a corruption scandal involving mineral mining licensing in the state.
All three will be charged under Section 16(b)(A) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009 for giving bribes, and Section 16(a) (A) of the same law for receiving bribes.
On June 18, MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed the arrest of a state assemblyman and a businessman, suspected of offering and receiving around RM200,000 in bribes related to mining licensing in Sabah.

KUANTAN, June 30 — A former administrative assistant was today sentenced to three months' jail and a fine of RM20,000, in default six months in prison, by the Sessions Court here for criminal breach of trust (CBT) involving more than RM41,000 in death benefits of seven Felda settlers. Judge Sazlina Safie meted out the sentence on Nurul Syafiha Awang Za, 36, after she pleaded guilty to the charge. The judge ordered Nurul Syafiha to serve the jail sentence from today. The woman, who was then with the Felda office here, was charged as a person entrusted by one Roslan Kumin with RM41,652.42 in cash to be given as death benefits to the next of kin of seven Felda Sungai Panching settlers, to have committed CBT by dishonestly using the money for her personal use. The offence was committed at the Felda Sungai Panching Timur Office here between February 2018 and 2019. The mother of three was charged under Section 406 of the Penal Code, which provides imprisonment for not more than 10 years with whipping and is liable to a fine upon conviction. Prosecuting officer Kamariah Seman, from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), appeared for the prosecution, while Nurul Syafiha was represented by lawyer Datuk Syed Azimal Amir Syed Abu Bakar. — Bernama

Senior Citizens Bill Expected To Be Tabled Next Year

KUALA LUMPUR, June 30 (Bernama) -- The government has completed the draft for the Senior Citizens Bill, which aims to protect the rights and well-being of the elderly, and is expected to be tabled in Parliament next year. Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said her ministry plans to submit the draft to the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) by the end of this year. At the moment, she said, the ministry is engaging in further consultations with industry players and state governments, including those in Sabah and Sarawak. 'What we are doing now is that we need to go back to the industry players, the stakeholders, to talk to them again. And we also have to refer to every state. 'So this is an ongoing thing, because the bill is not just going to be for us over in the peninsula. It's also for various states, especially those in the Borneo side,' she told a press conference after officiating the ASEAN + Republic of Korea Conference on Care and Support for Older Persons, here today. Also present was Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad and Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to ASEAN, Lee Jang Keun. Nancy further added that the increasing interest in the caregiving industry has contributed to the need for wider consultations. 'We want to expedite this. It's just that there are quite a number of people who are coming in with a lot of things, and this industry is booming.
