The contributions from trading and optimization are expected to be 'significantly lower' for the second quarter compared with the first for segments that span oil and gas trading, London-based Shell said in a statement on Monday.
Shell's sprawling but secretive in-house trading business is often one of its biggest profit drivers, and Chief Executive Officer Wael Sawan said in March that its traders haven't lost money in a single quarter over the past decade.
Shell's shares fell as much as 2.6% and were trading at £25.58 ($34.82) at 8:21 a.m. in London.
The weaker contribution from trading eroded an increase in margins from refining and chemicals, although the latter division is nevertheless expected to report a loss when Shell publishes its earnings results in late July.
Oil swung wildly in the quarter, diving to a four-year low in April as US President Donald Trump unleashed his global trade war and OPEC+ boosted supply. It then spiked last month as Israel struck targets in Iran before retreating back below $70 as tensions calmed.
Sawan has focused on cutting costs, boosting reliability and shedding underperforming assets in an effort to close a valuation gap between Shell and its US competitors. The strategy, which includes refocusing the company on its core oil and gas business and an emphasis on shareholder returns, has helped Shell shares outperform its closest rivals this year but left it with questions hanging over its future oil production growth.
Output decreased by nearly 100,000 barrels a day from the first quarter, largely because of Shell's sale of its onshore Nigeria subsidiary and scheduled maintenance. Shell had already notified investors of its expected production with oil and gas volumes in line with previous guidance, given in May.
Shell is the world's biggest trader of liquefied natural gas, and has forecast that global demand will grow by about 60% by 2040. Its LNG Canada project, which began its first exports in recent weeks, is one of a slew of new projects coming online globally in the next few years. Liquefaction volumes in the second quarter were in line with the first quarter.
Shell's trading update comes less than two weeks after the company announced it had no intention of making an offer for BP Plc, in a statement that quelled months of speculation and ties its hands for the next six months under UK takeover rules.
The company is scheduled to report second-quarter results July 31.

Musk Mentions ‘Epstein List' Again After Trump Mocks His America Party
Elon Musk on Monday took an apparent jab at President Donald Trump—posting on X about the inconsistent White House claims about a so-called 'Epstein list'—after the president mocked the billionaire's announcement of a new political party, as the feud between the two former allies is apparently back on. The feud between Tesla CEO Elon Musk and President Donald Trump continued to escalate after Musk ... More announced the formation of his own America Party. Getty Images In a post on X, Musk shared a meme that seems to call out the Trump administration over its failure to release a purported list of powerful clients kept by disgraced financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Musk's post is likely a response to an Axios report, which cited a Justice Department and FBI investigation report that found no evidence of Epstein maintaining such a list and using it to blackmail influential figures. Musk also responded to a post from another X account that contrasted the Axios report with an older news headline that cited Attorney General Pam Bondi saying the Epstein list was on her desk. When the feud between Musk and Trump first broke out last month, the billionaire alleged without evidence the White House had not released the Epstein list because Trump's name was on it. Musk has since deleted that post and the feud briefly thawed last month, with the billionaire expressing regret for his remarks. In a post on Truth Social on Sunday, Trump said he was 'saddened to watch Elon Musk go completely 'off the rails,' essentially becoming a TRAIN WRECK over the past five weeks.' The president said a third political party has 'never succeeded in the United States' and claimed the U.S. political system was 'not designed for them.' Trump said third parties were only good for creating 'Complete and Total DISRUPTION & CHAOS.' Before he flew from Bedminster, New Jersey, to Washington, D.C. on Sunday, Trump told reporters Musk's third-party idea was 'ridiculous.' The president added that U.S. politics have 'always been a two-party system, and starting a third party just adds to confusion…so he can have fun with it, but I think it's ridiculous.' What Do We Know About The America Party? Musk mentioned the idea of an 'America Party' last week as he assailed Trump's signature spending bill in a series of posts on X. The billionaire had tweeted: 'If this insane spending bill passes, the America Party will be formed the next day.' The X owner later retweeted the results of an unscientific poll he conducted on the platform last month and wrote, 'VOX POPULI VOX DEI 80% voted for a new party.' Musk informally launched the party on Saturday, after bashing both the Democrats and the GOP by referring to them as the 'uniparty.' According to the Axios report, the Trump administration plans to release both raw and "enhanced" versions of videos that reportedly show that no one entered the area of the prison where Epstein was being held on the night of his death. The investigators believe this supports the earlier medical evidence that the financier took his own life, a version of events several right-wing influencers have questioned in the past. The memo also reportedly notes that investigators did not find any 'incriminating 'client list'' owned by Epstein or 'credible evidence' to support claims that Epstein was blackmailing influential clients. Tangent In the Truth Social post, where he mocked Musk's new party, Trump said Musk was angry about his signature spending bill's passage, as it 'eliminates the ridiculous Electric Vehicle (EV) Mandate.' The president claimed when Musk endorsed him in the 2024 race, he asked the billionaire 'whether or not he knew that I was going to terminate the EV Mandate…He said he had no problems with that.' Trump also said Musk had asked him to nominate 'one of his close friends,' Jared Isaacman, for the NASA administrator role. The president claimed he was 'surprised to learn' that Isaacman was a 'blue blooded Democrat' and also felt it was 'inappropriate that a very close friend of Elon, who was in the Space Business, run NASA, when NASA is such a big part of Elon's corporate life.' Trump withdrew Isaacman's nomination in May. TikTok to Launch New Version of U.S. App Amid Looming Sale
China's social media giant TikTok is reportedly developing a new version of its U.S. app amid the looming threat of a potential ban or sale in the country. The news was first reported by The Information on Sunday, citing sources familiar with the matter. TikTok parent ByteDance is planning to launch the new app version in the U.S. on September 5, ahead of the extended deadline of September 17. U.S. President Donald Trump has extended the deadline for TikTok's ban or sale in the U.S. for the third time in order to find suitable 'non-Chinese' buyers for its U.S. operations. Last week, Trump noted that he has found a group of very wealthy buyers for the app, but that China's approval would be required for the potential sale. He is expected to start talks with China on Monday or Tuesday and is confident that Beijing will approve the sale. TikTok Aims to Stay in the U.S. Market TikTok boasts approximately 170 million American users and seeks to continue operations in the lucrative U.S. market through these strategic negotiations. According to available information, TikTok plans to launch the new app on U.S. app stores on September 5. Users will eventually need to download the new app to continue using the service. However, the existing app will also remain functional until March 2026, subject to the completion of a sale. An earlier deal for the sale of TikTok's U.S. operations to American buyers was in progress but was set aside following the imposition of stringent reciprocal U.S. tariffs on China. TikTok's problem came into focus last year after former President Joe Biden signed the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act (PAFACA), which requires TikTok to sell its U.S. operations to non-Chinese owners. The White House is concerned about the potential leakage of Americans' private data to Chinese officials through the app. However, TikTok and ByteDance have repeatedly denied any such wrongdoing. Currently, TikTok continues to operate in the U.S. under its original version but faces intense scrutiny and must find a resolution quickly to avoid a nationwide ban. Warning Issued Over Iranians Trying to Enter US: What to Know
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Federal authorities issued a warning to Border Patrol agents after a leaked memo showed that Iranian nationals may be planning to enter the United States illegally with assistance from Mexican drug cartels. Newsweek has contacted Customs and Border Protection for comment via email outside office hours. Why It Matters A Border Patrol alert issued a week earlier warned that the likelihood of Iranian sleeper cells inside the U.S. was higher than ever. Agents were instructed not to travel alone as a precaution. Iranians have been thrust into the national spotlight in the U.S. following President Donald Trump's recent strike on Iran's nuclear facilities. The U.S. Border Patrol has encountered more than 2,500 Iranian nationals at the southwest border since the beginning of 2021. It remains unknown how many were released into the country under the Biden administration. Migrants walking near the U.S.-Mexico border in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, on December 19, 2022. Migrants walking near the U.S.-Mexico border in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, on December 19, 2022. Christian Chavez/AP What To Know According to a memo obtained by NewsNation, Border Patrol received intelligence indicating that 35 Iranian nationals planned to cross the border between the Calexico and San Luis ports of entry from July 1 to July 5. Agents patrolling the Calexico-to-San Luis corridor have been ordered to stay alert and be prepared for possible encounters. The warning also suggested that the smuggling operation could be facilitated by powerful cartels, including the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and Los Salazar. Los Salazar is a relatively small armed wing of the Sinaloa Cartel, founded by Adán "Don Adán" Salazar Zamorano in the early 2000s. Primarily active in Sonora and parts of Chihuahua, the group specializes in trafficking cocaine across the U.S. border and has been linked to migrant smuggling operations. After Don Adán's 2023 extradition to the U.S., leadership passed to his brother Crispín Salazar Zamorano, who continues to maintain the group's close ties to the sons of "El Chapo" and control key smuggling corridors. The CJNG emerged in 2009 from the Milenio Cartel's splintering and is led by Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, also known as "El Mencho." It controls major drug routes—especially for fentanyl and methamphetamine—throughout Mexico and has established a presence in all 32 federal entities and at least a dozen countries. It is one of Mexico's most powerful and globally networked criminal organizations. On the first day of his second term, Trump signed an executive order designating Mexican drug cartels and other Latin American criminal groups as terrorist organizations. According to the order, the groups "threaten the safety of the American people, the security of the United States, and the stability of the international order in the Western Hemisphere." What People Are Saying The memo obtained by NewsNation said: "On Sunday, June 29, 2025, HSI Tip Line received information concerning 35 illegal Aliens of Iranian descent who may attempt entry into the U.S. between the Calexico and San Luis Port of Entry between July. 1, 2025 (today) until July. 5, 2025. Tipster advised that Los Salazars and CJNG may be involved."
