Conor McGregor reveals reasons for major career pivot amid UFC ‘plateau' as MMA legend's return remains a mystery
CONOR MCGREGOR ventured into the world of fight promotion just over a year ago.
The former two-division UFC champion stunned combat sports fans last April by dipping his toes into the world of bareknuckle boxing.

The Irishman, through his McGregor Sports and Entertainment company, acquired significant shares in the fast-rising and brutal Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship.
His acquisition of shares in BKFC and subsequent undertaking of a promoter's role stunned his legion of fans, many of whom were wondering if the move marked the end of his fighting days.
But he couldn't help jumping on board the BKFC ship after being blown away by the beautiful violence the promotion had displayed.
In an exclusive interview with SunSport, The Notorious said: "This is a major player in this industry.
"Bareknuckle Fighting Championship is a major, major player in this industry. And it's growing fast.
"And it's got an unbelievable foundation, it's a rock-solid [foundation].
"With the stable of fighters and a stable team, the team around it that's grown it and built it, this is a serious player in the game."
McGregor believes BKFC's rise in popularity has been helped by the stagnation of several combat sports promotions, including the UFC.
"In that time, you know, I won't say stale," he said. "But certain things have hit almost a plateau.

Inside McGregor's Notorious lifestyle
With more sides to his personality than an Octagon, Conor McGregor's rise has been an enthralling watch.
Going from UFC icon to entrepreneur and Hollywood star, the Irishman has transcended the sport he helped bring to the masses.
He has four children with fiancee Dee Devlin and the family enjoy a lavish lifestyle.
McGregor has not fought in UFC since breaking his leg in a trilogy fight with Dustin Poirier in 2021.
That has not stopped him amassing a net worth of over £150m thanks to his Proper No Twelve whiskey and fashion line.
And he is due to return to the Octagon at UFC 303 in an eagerly-awaited headline clash with Michael Chandler.
McGregor also starred alongside Jake Gyllenhaal in the Amazon Prime remake of classic movie Road House, although he is dreading his mum seeing one X-rated scene.
Notorious turned up to the premiere in a £60,000 suit that was outdone by his £460k watch.
The only thing sharper than his fashion sense is his tongue and the Dubliner has several bitter spats under his belt, including with UFC legend KhabibNurmagomedov.
That row led to one of his biggest controversies in 2018 as he travelled 3,000 miles to confront Khabib in a vicious attack on his bus.
He pleaded guilty to assault after punching a man in a pub in 2018 and had his £150k Bentley seized by police for driving offences four years later.
Joe Rogan lashed out at McGregor in a four-letter outburst and the Irishman has also fired shots at Jake Paul, KSI and Tommy Fury.
Boxing great Floyd Mayweather also has McGregor on his enemy list after the pair clashed in a cross-sport bout in 2017.
"Certain other players have hit a plateau. And all of a sudden, bare knuckle arises.
"And you've got a wild card, there's huge shows and events all across the world.
Conor McGregor appears to confirm his future with two fights left on UFC deal after Donald Trump meeting
"And I'm right there with it. The timing was impeccable."
McGregor, 36, has become enamoured by the bloodiness and brutality of BKFC, which is fast becoming a globally accepted promotion.
And he's eager to one day test himself in the sport, saying: 'I'm not up here just as an owner, player-manager, I'll title myself on this one.'
McGregor hasn't fought in any combat sport since breaking his left leg in his trilogy fight with Dustin Poirier nearly four years ago.
The UFC's first simultaneous two-weight world champion was set to make his grand cage comeback last June against Michael Chandler but was forced out of the Sin City showdown with a broken left pinky toe.
The Dubliner sensationally hinted that his fighting days might be over in March when he admitted he's content with his achievements.
But he's since performed a U-turn, setting his sights on a long-overdue showdown with Chandler in the wake of his rival's crushing defeat to Paddy Pimblett last month.
He wrote on X: "I'll only come back to a stadium. IRON MIKE CHANDLER, unfinished business."

We love them, so I would recommend them to anyone wanting a cooler, more refreshing sleep during the heat!" A second buyer had mixed feelings towards their purchase, writing: "It is soft and lightweight. I'm a restless sleeper and it did not stay on me. I put it under me to try. Either way, at first, it is cool. "Once my body is on it or under it, after 10-15 minutes, it retains my body heat if I don't move. Moving it collects the air, so to speak, and cools down, as long as my body isn't touching it. It does not help with hot flashes with me." Another wrote: "This is the second blanket I've purchased, so we can have one in the kids too. It's lightweight and very soft. I like to cover myself with it when I'm having a migraine." Article continues below An additional customer concludes: "I would really like to give this an honest review, but my kids have stolen it and I can't get it back from them. They come in from school on a hot day and just wrap up in it for 10 minutes, which cools them down a treat. "They've been sleeping absolutely fine in them and said they actually managed to sleep pretty quickly at night instead of the usual fidgeting due to how cool the blanket feels. It's nice and silky, performs well, but a little expensive, but as long as it lasts all summer, then it's worth the money."

George Ezra hails Scottish folk group Kinnaris Q
Describing them as 'some of the musicians I admire most', Ezra has invited them to play in his Hertford hometown this week, as well as use his state-of-the-art studio free of charge to record new music. The multi-platinum-selling artist first met Kinnaris Q when they were invited to play on a documentary about his walk from Land's End to John O'Groats for Amazon Prime – an invitation that band member Aileen Reid initially thought was a wind-up. It turned out to be genuine, and Kinnaris Q are the only Scottish band whose music was kept on the End To End documentary, produced by Catherine Miller who also produced the hit Freddie Flintoff documentary. READ MORE: One-woman play will explore consequences of explosion in extreme sex acts on OnlyFans Ezra said later: 'From the very start, their energy was infectious and, combined with the sheer brilliance of their music, made it one of my all-time favourite musical encounters.' Kinnaris Q were filmed playing outside in Glencoe, not long after the Covid lockdowns. 'The whole day was magic,' said Reid. 'It was funny because I was wearing a white dress and George was in his walking boots, shorts and T-shirt so some of the people who walked past didn't know who he was and thought we had just got married. 'The band is in the documentary for a brief five minutes or so but we spent a full day together blethering about lots of things, particularly about an instantaneous change as soon as they arrived all by foot into Scotland – people were so friendly and good craic. 'Needless to say they absolutely loved Scotland and that strangely made my heart sing. 'We spoke about how living away from our hometowns for years made us realise how much we loved where we came from – Glasgow, for me and Hertford, for George.' Reid said the love of their hometown had led Ezra and his sister Jess to celebrate their roots through the creation of a free magazine to nurture the community spirit in Hertford. 'Through this, they're bringing us down to perform in a local venue,' Reid said. This week's gig sold out quickly with tickets priced on a 'pay as you feel' basis. 'George's priorities are to put on good music in Hertford and enable people to experience a gig who otherwise might not be able to afford it,' Reid explained. Both the gig and the free studio time are a welcome boost for Kinnaris Q, with Reid pointing out that the pandemic and cost of living crisis have hit the music industry badly. Ticket prices are now so high for big concerts that fewer people are turning up for regular gigs from less well-known musicians. 'Live gigs are almost dead for people, it's awful,' said Reid. 'There's a big chunk of young people who didn't have that natural experience of going to festivals and gigs because of the pandemic. 'All of that stopped for several years so that culture has been skipped for that generation yet it is so important for anyone within the music industry. 'I don't just mean musicians and bands, I mean engineers and the cleaners who clean the venue. 'Everybody is on what feels like a bit of a sinking ship because that was our main income.' Streaming has also wiped out music sales, but if musicians don't stream then they automatically cut themselves off from a huge audience. 'We are blessed to have a talent but that is not the sole reason we make music,' said Reid. 'We have children, we have homes and bills to pay. It is not just a hobby for us.' With studio costs also extremely high now, the invitation to record at Ezra's has been welcomed by the band, who also see it as a chance to work with new people and bring their music to a new audience. (Image: Rockstarimages) 'It's totally magical and brought us a bit of faith in humanity,' said Reid. 'George and his sister Jess have been absolute diamonds and such generous supporters of our music and more. 'Since day one, we've run the entire KQ operation ourselves – no agent, no label, no management – so to be offered this opportunity purely out of respect for our craft and musicianship has been mega. What a boost!' Originally called Kinnaris Quintet, the name is being shortened to Kinnaris Q in order to allow more flexibility in the line-up. 'It opens us up to work with guests rather than keeping it to a quintet all the time,' Reid explained. Although the gig in Hertford on Wednesday is sold out, the band can be seen in Edinburgh at the preview night for the Edinburgh International Festival on July 30.
