'Extremely serious' landfill fire closes dump in Prince Rupert through long weekend

Yahoo3 days ago
A landfill fire in Prince Rupert has closed the municipal dump through the long weekend, with the earliest possible reopening coming on Tuesday, the city says.
In a statement posted online, the northwest B.C. city says the fire was discovered Friday morning and was followed by an immediate closure.
"Under advisement of our landfill consultant, the City landfill will remain closed over the weekend with the intention to reopen on Tuesday morning, pending confirmation that it is safe to do so," the statement says.
"Landfill fires are extremely serious and require particular fire response and management, requiring automatic closures when they are detected. The City has reported the incident to environmental authorities and will follow any guidance provided."
No air quality advisories have been issued in relation to the fire.

NYC air quality worsens again amid Canadian wildfire haze

NEW YORK — Hazy skies and low air quality returned to the five boroughs on Monday, as smoke from Canadian wildfires again created a gray scene in the New York skies. All of New York state and almost all of New England was under an air quality alert from the National Weather Service on Monday afternoon. The warning for New York City extended until midnight. 'Air quality is unhealthy for sensitive groups, including older adults, children, and people with heart or lung conditions,' NYC's emergency department wrote on social media. 'You may notice a faint smell of smoke, and low visibility conditions.' It has become a depressingly familiar story for New Yorkers in recent years. Smoke from uncontrolled wildfires in Canada, most of them in the province of Manitoba, has been carried south and east by common wind patterns. The worst air quality in recent years occurred in June 2023, when the smoke became so thick it created an orange haze over the city. However, the subpar air quality has returned to the city in each of the past two summers as well, including multiple times earlier this year. 'Limit outdoor activity, close windows, use air purifiers if available, and consider wearing a high-quality mask if you must go outside and are in a sensitive group,' NYC Emergency Management warned. New York was hardly alone in dealing with poor air quality on Monday. All of Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut and Delaware, along with the majority of Vermont were also under air quality alerts. _____

Municipalities begin to take action with no end in sight to dry spell

Drought-like conditions across Nova Scotia have raised water concerns in some communities with no significant rain expected in the province for the foreseeable future. In Annapolis County, those living near Margaretsville are under a mandatory water conservation order. Jim Young, the director of municipal operations for Annapolis County, says the order covers around 90 to 100 homes "We have not had substantial rain to recharge any of our local streams and rivers and lakes in … well over a month," he said Monday. Young said those who get their water from the Margaretsville's water utility should only be using water for personal use and avoid using water for non-essential activities, including watering the lawn and washing cars. He said Annapolis County's other water supplies are holding up but continue to be monitored. Advisories issued across N.S. Elsewhere in the province, Antigonish has implemented voluntary water conservation measures, and is asking residents to be careful with their usage and reduce non-essential activities. The Municipality of Colchester, meanwhile, has issued a water advisory notice for those who get their water from Tatamagouche's water utility, asking them to limit water usage for landscaping and to be mindful of wasting water. Water conservation notices have also been issued in Stewiacke, Stellarton, West Hants, Municipality of the District of Yarmouth and Queens. In Stewiacke, town officials have previously said that water levels in St. Andrews River, the town's main water source, are at the lowest since monitoring began 10 years ago. According to the latest report from the Canadian Drought Monitor, issued June 30, Nova Scotia's central region is experiencing a moderate drought. Since then, conditions have remained dry. Last week, Environment Canada meteorologist Ian Hubbard said Nova Scotia was on track to receive just a third of the amount of rain it normally would in July. According to the latest forecast from Environment Canada, it is expected to be dry and hot all week. MORE TOP STORIES Solve the daily Crossword
