Sacred threads: Why fashion designers can't stop imitating Catholicism - ABC Religion & Ethics
And this wasn't just a one-off. From the Vatican-inspired looks at the 2018 Met Gala — titled Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination — to Chinese couturier Guo Pei's reliquary-themed gowns and Rihanna's unforgettable turn in a mitre, Catholic vestments have become a source-book for high fashion. But what does it mean when devotion becomes design? Can beauty, luxurious, excessive, sensuous beauty bridge the divide between the sacred and the secular?

Is it simply appropriation? A cynical recycling of sacred signs for visual drama, divorced from belief? Or is it a homage, a kind of cultural veneration of forms that still resonate with meaning even in an increasingly secular age?
Dolce & Gabbana themselves have long walked this path. Their 2022 Alta Moda line featured cherubs, crucifixes and cathedral embroidery; their Fall 2013 collection drew on Byzantine mosaics of the Madonna. In 2025, they took it even further. Alta Sartoria in Rome was not only an ode to ecclesiastical tailoring, it was Catholic iconography elevated to high art and turned into luxury commerce.
Reaction, as always, was divided. Don Alberto Rocca, a Milanese priest and adviser to the designers, praised the show's sincerity: 'It's not mocking, it's about the spirit', he said. 'Otherwise, I would not be here.' Another priest, Fr Alberto Ravagnani, took to Instagram to defend the use of vestment aesthetics as a way of 'restoring lustre' to religious heritage. Yet others were less convinced. A theology student condemned the spectacle as a 'usurpation' of liturgical meaning for profit and entertainment. Catholic social media lit up with accusations of blasphemy, vulgarity and desecration.
Why does this topic provoke such intensity? Perhaps because Catholic vestments are not just old clothes. They are visible theology. The stole draped across the shoulders signifies priestly authority; the chasuble speaks of charity covering all. Colours shift with the liturgical calendar: purple for penitence, white for resurrection, red for martyrdom and Holy Spirit. To translate these garments into runway fashion is to walk a fine line between symbolic power and aesthetic detachment.

But fashion, too, traffics in signs. It plays with identity, status, reverence and rebellion. The power of a Catholic-inspired fashion piece lies in its layered ambiguity. Is it ironic? Reverent? Transgressive? Beautiful? Or simply lucrative? When Rihanna walked the Met Gala carpet in 2018 in a headgear resembling a mitre and silver-beaded robe by Maison Margiela, was she making a joke, a statement of cultural possession, or a tribute to aesthetic grandeur?
What seems clear is that Catholicism offers fashion something rare in our visual culture: a unified iconography that is both immediately recognisable and endlessly rich. Unlike minimalist Protestant spaces or austere Zen aesthetics, Catholic visual tradition revels in abundance. Incense, gold thread, relics, processions. Everything is elevated, ornate, and designed to evoke awe. This is precisely what makes it so seductive to designers who traffic in fantasy.

But where does that leave belief? In one sense, these fashion shows are a paradox. As church attendance declines in some parts of Europe and the West, Catholic aesthetics are booming. Not in parishes, but in couture . There's something almost liturgical about the way designers like Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana choreograph their events: processions, symbolism, hierarchy, an audience watching with bated breath. If religion has retreated from the centre of public life, perhaps fashion has stepped in. Not as replacement, but as echo.
Still, there's a danger in blurring the lines too far. Liturgical garments aren't just visual flourishes. They are consecrated for a purpose. To replicate them for entertainment or consumption risks stripping them of meaning. At its worst, this becomes 'devotional cosplay'. Pretending to be sacred while selling something very secular.

Yet this doesn't mean the line between fashion and faith is impenetrable. There's a long history of dialogue between the church and the arts. Think of the splendour of medieval reliquaries, the pageantry of Baroque altarpieces, or the richness of Gothic vestments woven in gold. At its best, fashion inspired by faith can open up a conversation about beauty, transcendence, memory and the persistence of the sacred in a post-religious age.
Indeed, the fascination with Catholic aesthetics may say more about our time than about the church. In an era of digital overload and moral uncertainty, the forms of traditional religion still exert a pull. They offer not just visual drama but a kind of spiritual grammar — symbols of order, mystery, devotion and eternity. Fashion latches onto these not always because it understands them, but because it recognises their power.

Perhaps that's the deeper story. The success of these religiously infused shows, despite (or because of) the outrage, reveals a hunger for meaning that art alone cannot satisfy. There's a reason why even in protest, the language used is one of sacrilege, desecration, reverence. These are not merely clothes. And perhaps that's why they matter.
In the end, we don't need to decide once and for all whether this is tribute or travesty. That's too simple. The more interesting questions are: What happens when devotion becomes design? When belief becomes aesthetic? And can beauty — honest, challenging, provocative beauty — still serve as a bridge between heaven and earth?

'You might not know me, but your husband will,' is how Bonnie Blue introduces herself online to her 800,000 X followers. So too will your teenage sons, daughters and grandchildren. Blue by name, and nature. 'Bonnie Blue' is the nom de guerre of 26-year-old Tia Billinger, a young English woman from a 'good home' who gave up a successful career working in finance recruitment to become a garish sex worker. The difference in her trajectory is that she isn't just a 'worker', she is a woman using her naked body to build an X-rated media empire earning her – allegedly – $3m a month via OnlyFans. She started out filming her liaisons with groups of men, young men and many masked men by posting the finished pornographic products online for paid subscribers. Racy previews and her casting calls are available free of charge to everyone who scrolls the internet. It's there she posts her address and we learn that participants who attend must bring along photo ID, evidence of ejaculate and men aged 18 and older are required to make 'donations'. That was all before she was kicked off the video subscription platform for extreme activities like reportedly sleeping with more than 1000 men in one day and then attempting to place herself, bound and blindfolded, in a glass box 'petting zoo', and encouraging people to do what they liked to her. The idea for a sexualised stunt was reminiscent of Marina Abramovic's performance in the 1970s where the artist sat in front of objects ranging from honey to scalpels and encouraged her audience to use them on her. Blue hasn't heard of this seminal, boundary-pushing work. 'She gave them all these horrible sharp things – I was just going to have dildos and lube,' she told The Times. These two events she claims to have participated in have never been seen. OnlyFans refused to allow her to upload her 'world record' with 1000 men due to consent issues; she has since moved to another platform, which she is busy growing. Elon Musk's X is the only social media site that allows her to publish unencumbered. She may cop criticism for 'preying' on young, 'barely legal' men to film their escapades which she then monetises, but the artist known as Bonnie Blue has snookered broader society. She's now mainstream. Since being legitimately cancelled online, she's had to pivot. Blue is desperate for publicity. She must be thrilled to be the subject of a new documentary which has just aired in the UK on Channel 4 (a publicly established network that raises its own revenue). Her father, who worked as a railway technician, watched it without flinching and her mother is proud of her endeavours. 'If you could earn £1m a month, you'd change your morals and get your bits out,' Mrs Billinger said. The documentary came about when the filmmaker became aware of the existence of Bonnie Blue as her content was being served up to her 15-year-old daughter via her social media algorithm. A fact that Australians processing this week's expansion of the government's world-first social media ban for those under-16 should take on board. 'There is a place for social media. There is no place for predatory algorithms,' Communications Minister Anika Wells said. Gawking online – either in disbelief, disapproval or delight – at Bonnie Blue boosted her notoriety, fame and infamy. All of this she has parlayed into numerous legitimate media appearances, including a coveted cover story in the esteemed The Times Magazine. She is not your average porn star or sex worker. She's the Wall Street banker of the pleasure industry. She's Gordon Gekko in lingerie. She's a ruthless morality raider. 'I'm just a clever slut,' is how she described herself in a recent conversation with the equally controversial Andrew Tate, with empty eyes and a straight face. Tate is the loquacious lad who rose to fame on Big Brother who now wears sunglasses indoors and espouses misogyny online. He is also facing numerous rape, human trafficking, organised crime, and tax evasion charges. Like Tate, Blue also thinks women who are infrequently intimate with their partners or husbands are 'lazy and uneducated'. She said she is the product of 'what women have been fighting for the past 100 years'. She also got her start in Australia. Blue and her now ex-husband moved to the Gold Coast after Covid in 2022 after failed attempts to conceive. It was here in the shadows of the Glitter Strip where her self-esteem crashed. 'I became really insecure. I'd cover up my body, cancel trips,' she told The Times. She claimed living among the gaggle of 'glamorous influencers' who call the Gold Coast home caused her to put on weight and lose her self-confidence. It was here she started experimenting with 'camming' – where women talk and perform lewd acts online for money. After her marriage broke down, due to the pair 'growing apart', she became an escort. She also joined OnlyFans and set about climbing its ranks as a high-earner. One stunt included her attending Schoolies, distributing business cards with a QR code to her page, offering herself 'for free' to consenting 18-year-old men. She published their encounters amid a flurry of publicity, where she was labelled a 'sexual predator'. The only label she cares about is the one her mother made her. She carried the homemade sign for her next feat that read: 'Bonk me and let me film it.' She then went on to sleep with hundreds of university students in the UK and Mexico. Before being de-platformed by OnlyFans, she was blacklisted by Airbnb, dating apps Tinder and Hinge and Australia for breaching a tourist visa for publicising a return to Schoolies for a sequel. More than 20,000 people signed a petition to have her banned. 'Now my nephew is crying and saying he can't get his booking deposit back,' one Reddit thread said of the news. 'There's no doubt if this was a male he would be labelled a predator,' another said. There's the rub. She embraces the outrage and courts the controversy. She doesn't appear to care for anything other than her bikini line, and bottom line. She recruits other young women – of which there are now many 'copy cat' versions embarking on similar 'careers', including Australian Annie Knight – to participate in obscene stunts with young men to produce warped 'sex education' videos. She does not pay any participant and shuns any responsibility. 'I'm not their mum. I'm not there to guide them. I'm here to say 'Hey, this is a business opportunity',' she said. Her next professional accomplishment appears to be tier-marketing these 'business opportunities' for those barely out of high school. She may not blink about exploiting virgins, but she should blanch at taking advantage of people whose only corporate experience at that age is a part-time gig at McDonald's. She's the personification, not of porn culture, but of the influencer economy. She's a sociopath in the sense that statistics show a high proportion of the most successful chief executives are. Bonnie Blue Inc may be a success story but the inception of Bonnie Blue highlights the importance of legitimate sex education and counselling services in schools and beyond to counteract how social media is frying the fragile synapses of young people. She's terminally bored – as the documentary, and corresponding media, shows. She was bored working a 9 to 5 job; bored driving a Mercedes by the time she was 19; and she's bored (and worried about being broke) now she's being repeatedly blocked online. She's boring, too. You just have to take a look at her provocative Instagram captions to realise that for someone who markets herself as a provocateur and has a perverted preoccupation with fluids, Bonnie Blue is about as deep as a puddle. Coriolanus star Hazem Shammas on the futility of making art at a time of crisis
Hazem Shammas doesn't see the point in making art at a time like this. "I feel the futility of it more and more," he tells ABC Arts. It's a disappointing and troubling feeling for the Palestinian Australian actor, best known for roles in TV shows Safe Harbour, Underbelly and The Twelve. Shammas is grappling with this as he prepares to play the title role of Coriolanus in a new production by Bell Shakespeare in Melbourne. The rarely performed play — it's Bell's first staging in almost 30 years — is about the corrosive influence of power and politics. Shammas plays Coriolanus, a soldier who returns to Rome victorious after war with the Volscians. Called upon to be the city's next consul, he faces opposition from both the city's elected tribunes (played by Matilda Ridgway and Marco Chiappi) and ordinary citizens. He rallies against the idea of popular rule, saying citizens having any power over politicians allows "crows to peck the eagles". Consequently he is banished from Rome, and soon seeks revenge on the city by joining forces with the Volscians. Coriolanus — marking Shammas's return to Bell Shakespeare after starring in Macbeth in 2023 — is landing rave reviews, but the actor had to be convinced to take on the role. "It's not the crowd-pleaser that, say, Macbeth is, and it's not known so much," he says. "And the language: I get a real sense of Shakespeare's maturity in his writing; the poetry is denser." While parallels have been drawn between the character of Coriolanus and US President Donald Trump, the far more disturbing link for Shammas is to the war in Gaza, where 146 people including 88 children have died of malnutrition and the death toll has passed 60,000 people since Hamas' attack on Israel in October 2023. "We're studying power in a time when there are horrific abuses of power and that affects me," Shammas says. "I'm a Palestinian, playing a role where the actor walks around talking about wiping people out as a solution. "I'm playing a role where a man walks around talking about essentially ethnic cleansing. "Of course I'm going to think about that constantly." Making theatre at this time, Shammas says, is "dabbling in whimsy" and an "intellectual privilege". "[Coriolanus] is a play about the abuses of power, but when we're living in a climate of utter, horrific abuse of power and our arts community is silenced, and we remain silent, it troubles me." Since the beginning of the war in Gaza, Australian artists whose work has referenced the Arab-Israeli conflict, or who have spoken out about human rights abuses, including the killing of journalists, have had performances cancelled and awards rescinded. Those artists include Khaled Sabsabi, who, after being dropped was recently reinstated to represent Australia at the Venice Biennale; and Jayson Gillham, who is suing the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra for his cancelled performances. Expressions of support for the Palestinian cause have also ended in censorship. Writer K A Ren Wyld lost a $15,000 fellowship over a social media post following the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar in October last year, which was deleted shortly after it was posted. Kellee Green's win at the Queensland Music Awards for an instrumental song titled 'River to Sea' led to the Brisbane City Council withdrawing funding for the awards; workshops by Omar Sakr and other writers at the State Library Victoria were cancelled over "child and cultural safety"; and when some of the cast of The Seagull at Sydney Theatre Company wore keffiyehs to a curtain call, a number of donors and board members withdrew. "How are we OK with our artists and our writers being constantly silenced?" Shammas says. "How are we OK with things being defunded or threatened [to be defunded] constantly? "We're in a perpetual state of fear, and we're walking around not talking about it, only worried about our next job and whether we've got a job or not, while people are being f**king slaughtered." Shammas argues government intervention "can stop our voices". "But it's happening everywhere and to everyone right now purely because of a f**king genocide that is being allowed to happen in Palestine. "[That intervention] is more troubling now than it was [in the past]." Israel has repeatedly denied it is pursuing a campaign of genocide in Gaza, accusing Hamas in turn of trying to wipe out the Jewish population in Israel. Shammas does not intend to stop working in the arts. "That's who I am; it's what I do," he says. "That's why I'm so troubled by this." And while he is frustrated by the failure of the Australian arts community to speak up against against the war in Gaza and what he argues is censorship, he is also at times heartened by solidarity in the wider community. For example, current and former collaborators — including Coriolanus co-stars Jules Billington and Matilda Ridgway — have signed an open letter of more than 4,000 artists to the federal government calling for unimpeded humanitarian access to Gaza, potential sanctions of Israel, and recognition of Palestinian statehood. "I don't doubt the people I work with and their capacities for engagement in this," he says. "I don't doubt any individual audiences' capacities for engagement in this. "But I doubt our collective will for engagement in this." Still, Shammas remains proud of the work he and his collaborators at Bell Shakespeare have done on Coriolanus. "We've created an exceptional piece of art," he says. But he fears the ideas about power and politics in the play fail to reach beyond the theatre. That impelled him to speak up. Coriolanus is at Arts Centre Melbourne until August 10.
