Asean PR Excellence Award to be held in KL on July 7

KUALA LUMPUR: The Institute of Public Relations Malaysia (IPRM) and Jakarta-based Asean Public Relations Network (APRN) will jointly organise the Asean PR Excellence Award to be held in Kuala Lumpur on July 7.
In a statement today, IPRM said the award is strategically aligned with the annual Kuala Lumpur International PR Conference (KLIP 7), themed 'Impactful AI, Social Media Communication and Online Education for Asean and the Global Community'.
Since its inception in 2019, KLIP has been a pivotal global conference for PR and communication leaders, professionals as well as academics from Asean and beyond, fostering the sharing of the latest industry insights.
The statement noted that the conference will feature presentations and discussions aimed at cultivating collaborative strategies to enhance online safety awareness and education across Asean.
"Addressing the crucial imperatives of responsible digital citizenship and ethical communication practices, this event gains particular significance as Malaysia holds the Asean Chairmanship in 2025," the statement said.
The statement further noted that this pivotal role underscores Malaysia's dedication to fostering regional collaboration and assuming leadership in communication and information security.
In the same statement, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil reaffirmed Malaysia's commitment to building a future where responsible and transparent communication remains at the heart of every relationship.
"As Malaysia assumes the role of the Asean Chair, we are reminded of the critical importance of leadership grounded in integrity, transparency and ethical communication. Public relations excellence is not merely about influence; it is about fostering trust, respect and meaningful connections that transcend borders.
"In this pivotal moment, Malaysia is proud to lead by example, championing ethical communication as a cornerstone of our regional cooperation," he said.
The statement also quoted IPRM president Jaffri Amin Osman as saying that the confluence of the Asean Excellence Award and international conference provides a unique opportunity to celebrate achievements and drive meaningful dialogue on critical issues, especially on AI, issues and crisis management, ethics, and governance in PR and communications.
Reinforcing this view, IPRM Accreditation Board chairman Professor Datuk Seri Dr Syed Arabi Idid highlighted the crucial role of communication and English language mastery for an impactful Malaysian Asean Chairmanship, a point corroborated by a comprehensive International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) Electoral Studies Research Unit survey.
He emphasised that these skills, coupled with Malaysia's considerable international experience, will be vital in Asean's global representation, perfectly complementing the objectives of the upcoming conference and awards in fostering collaboration and raising PR and communication standards across the region.
Meanwhile, APRN president Prita Kemal Gani said the Asean PR Excellence Award will recognise outstanding achievements in public relations across the Asean region, celebrating innovative campaigns and impactful initiatives that have contributed to the advancement of the profession.
"We are thrilled to bring the award to Kuala Lumpur this year, a testament to the growing collaboration and dynamism within the Asean PR community. This event will be a catalyst for further growth and excellence in our field," she added.
KLIP will feature international, Asean as well as national keynote speakers, panel discussions and interactive sessions, providing valuable insights and networking opportunities for attendees.

Cost relief ‘tribute' likely

BUTTERWORTH: The Prime Minister has hinted at an important announcement, described as an 'extraordinary tribute' to Malaysians, which will be made either tomorrow or on Tuesday. It is expected to address efforts to ease the rising cost of living. Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the Finance Ministry is currently refining proposals that can be announced immediately to ease the burden on the people and address current issues. Anwar said that more time is needed to enhance the 'surprise' before the big reveal. 'I need a little more time to make the announcement, to allow my team under the Finance Ministry to prepare the 'surprise' in greater detail to ensure it is comprehensive. 'If not Monday, Tuesday ... give me two or three more days to refine it.' The Prime Minister said the government is looking for the best approach to balance the rising cost of living with the country's fiscal capacity, given that existing expenditure on assistance such as the Rahmah Cash Contribution and civil servant salary increases has reached billions of ringgit. 'We want to increase salaries and allowances for public servants by RM10bil this year and next year by an additional RM18bil. 'We want to do the same with the STR by RM13bil, making it RM23bil. 'Every day at the Finance Ministry, we are working hard to find an approach that can be announced soon, especially to address the cost of living,' he said when launching the Bumiputra Master Plan, the Tunas Madani programme and the JKPSB housing project yesterday. Anwar announced via social media earlier this week that he would make an important announcement as a gesture of appreciation for Malaysians. At the same event, the Prime Minister said that eight newly appointed Court of Appeal judges and 14 High Court judges are scheduled to be sworn in on July 28. He said the appointment process had gone through all the necessary stages, including the assessment by the Judicial Appointments Commission, discussions with the Malay Rulers, and the consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. 'Many have asked me why it was not announced earlier. I cannot answer arbitrarily because the process of appointing judges involves the consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. 'It needs to go through discussions with the Rulers and after it is agreed, it will then be brought back to the King for consent,' Anwar explained. Earlier this week, His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, consented to the appointment of the new Chief Justice of the Federal Court, Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh, Datuk Abu Bakar Jais as President of the Court of Appeal, and Datuk Azizah Nawawi as Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak. Their official swearing-in and presentation of letters of appointment will also be held on July 28.

Celebrating M'sian leadership

Icons of change: (From left) Yasmin, Idris and Chia are honoured for outstanding contributions in their fields. SUCCESSFUL leaders often bring inspiration that cultivates a sense of purpose in the young. At a recent graduation ceremony held by Heriot-Watt University Malaysia (HWUM) for its 2025 graduating class, three distinguished Malaysian leaders were conferred the Honorary Degree of Doctor of the University. Datuk Seri Idris Jala, chairman of Pemandu Associates, was honoured for his visionary leadership in driving Malaysia's socio-economic reforms and for pioneering the Big Fast Results (BFR) approach to national transformation. Datuk Yvonne Chia, the independent non-executive chairman of Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia, was honoured for her extraordinary contributions to Malaysia's financial sector and beyond. Datuk Yasmin Mahmood, a leading digital strategist and former chief executive officer (CEO) of the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation, was honoured for her exceptional leadership in shaping Malaysia's digital economy and for her pivotal role in advancing digital transformation in both Malaysia and the wider Asean region. These individuals continue to shape the future of business, governance and digital innovation in the country and beyond, according to a press release. HWUM provost and CEO Prof Mushtak Al-Atabi said the honorary graduates' remarkable achievements serve as a powerful source of inspiration. 'Their leadership exemplifies the very principles that guide our university: empowering individuals to lead with purpose, drive societal progress, and shape the future,' he said. He also congratulated the graduating students from multiple disciplines who received their degrees from the university's pro-chancellor, Datuk (Dr) Nicol Ann David, at the ceremony held in a hotel in Putrajaya on July 14. 'We are committed to nurturing purpose-driven leaders who are not only academically accomplished but also driven to create lasting, meaningful impact in business, technology and society, both in Malaysia and beyond. 'As we celebrate the success of our graduates, we are reminded of the transformative power of education and the impact our alumni will have across these sectors,' Prof Mushtak said. Addressing the students, Nicol said education is the bedrock of shared understanding and sustainable progress. 'It equips us with the tools to create a future where knowledge and collaboration allow us to overcome any obstacle. 'Today, we celebrate your extraordinary achievements, and I eagerly anticipate the incredible contributions you will make in the years to come,' she said.

Spotlight on policies and politics

PETALING JAYA: Along with the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) which would set the tone for the country's development over the next five years, new dynamics on the government bench, tariffs and Bills are set to grab the limelight in the upcoming Dewan Rakyat meeting which begins tomorrow. The 13MP, which is the first full-fledged development blueprint under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's government, is scheduled to be tabled on July 31. This will be followed up with lawmakers' debates and ministerial responses. Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul recently said that the House will allocate adequate time for MPs to debate the plan, not ruling out the possibility of extending the clock to 10pm-11pm if there is a need. 'We want the debate (session) to be more substantive and MPs should not overpoliticise the situation. 'MPs need to stay focused on what issues we are discussing ... how (they) can help the government by suggesting things the government may have overlooked, that is our role,' he was quoted as saying recently. It is worth noting that former Economy minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, who played a key role in the formulation of the 13MP, will return to the House as a backbencher following his resignation on May 28. Rafizi had also questioned the government's 'hasty' decision to 'restructure and reshape' the 13MP before the deadline. 'Why is the issue of 'restructuring the 13MP draft' arising at the last minute when there were no such concerns raised throughout the time I and the Economy Ministry presented the contents of the 13MP before this?' he asked in a statement on June 27. Rafizi said the statement 'to restructure and reshape' the 13MP has triggered concern among civil servants, market analysts and the public at large. He noted that the 13MP, which outlines Malaysia's development agenda for the next five years, had been prepared entirely by civil servants in record time – under one year – without engaging external consultants. This came after Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar announced that Finance Minister II Senator Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan had been tasked with reviewing and revamping the core framework of the 13MP. In the updated seating position in the Dewan Rakyat, the Pandan MP along with his party colleague and Setiawangsa MP Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, who also resigned as Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability minister, have been moved to the backbenchers seats in Bloc D from their previous seats as part of the executive arm in the government bench. Observers believe the duo would also be the check and balance, and emerge as a voice of reason from within the government bloc. Universiti Malaya socio-political analyst Professor Datuk Dr Awang Azman Awang Pawi said the duo's absence from the Cabinet would raise questions on the strength of the party's progressive voice within the government. 'This opens up a new space for progressive leaders like Rafizi and Nik Nazmi, who can now play a freer, more outspoken role outside the executive. 'Unbound by the constraints of Cabinet collective responsibility, they are now in the position to ask sharper questions, raise pressing public issues and advocate for grounded, realistic policies, which is different from the populist and emotionally driven rhetoric often employed by the Opposition,' he added. He said the dynamics now will not only be that of the government versus the Opposition but would hinge on the voices of these two MPs as backbenchers. He said if the two are very critical, it would signal cracks in the government. However, if done right, he said this could increase the government's credibility as it would be seen as an administration that is open to criticisms. 'This has the potential to increase the people's trust,' he said. 'The people are evaluating how serious this government truly is in bringing about change. If voices like Rafizi and Nik Nazmi present thoughtful and non-emotional arguments, it will boost confidence in the unity government. 'Therefore, this parliamentary session is not just about policy or the Opposition versus the government. It will become a platform to reposition these two reformist figures, who may prove more effective outside the Cabinet, criticising policy weaknesses, offering fresh ideas and shaping a new, more mature political culture.' As for the House's order of business, the second readings of Bills such as the Consumer Credit Bill 2025 and several Bills under the Housing and Local Government, which were tabled in the last meeting, will continue. The Auditor-General's report will also be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat tomorrow. As for important Bills that will be tabled for the first reading, a government source said the Bills that was previously scheduled for tabling has been 'retracted for further refining'. When contacted, Deputy Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Aiman Athirah Sabu said the tabling of the Urban Renewal Bill (URA) is on track. 'The URA will be tabled in this meeting. It is on schedule for August,' she said. Aiman also said her ministry will table other Bills as well. The 25% tariff imposed on Malaysia by the US government too is expected to dominate the polemic in the House as it comes into effect on Aug 1.
