Russian wheat prices down as new crop approaches market

MOSCOW: Russian wheat export prices fell last week as the new crop approached the market, with no confirmation of significant crop damage from past frosts, analysts said.
The price for Russian wheat with 12.5% protein content for free-on-board (FOB) delivery late March to early April down $2 to $247 per metric ton compared with the previous week, said Dmitry Rylko, head of the IKAR consultancy.
The Sovecon consultancy estimated prices for Russian wheat with 12.5% protein content at between $249 and $250 per ton FOB for the middle of last week, compared with $249-$251 last week. New crop offers are around $234–235 per ton.
Sovecon raised its estimate for April wheat exports by 0.1 million tons to 2.3 million tons, still substantially lower than the 4.6 million tons exported in April 2024.
Trading activity on the domestic market is expected to remain limited during the first half of May, with May Day and Victory Day holidays in Russia on May 1–2 and May 8–9, the agency wrote in a weekly note.
IKAR has not yet changed its export estimates over 2.1 million tons for April wheat exports.
Rusagrotrans rail carrier raised its April export estimate to 2.3 million tons from 1.9 million tons due to stronger demand from Turkey, which shipped 355,000 tons in April, 2.3 times more than in March, and Iran with 270,000 tons (1.9 times more). The forecast for May exports is about 1.9 million tons.
Sovecon last week raised its forecast for Russia's wheat export for the 2024/2025 and 2025/26 season, noting that under current circumstances it does not expect a significant acceleration of exports.
IKAR and SovEcon analysts do not believe that short-term frosts in the European part of the country were able to significantly damage crops.

Corn stuck near lows on supply pressure

PARIS/SINGAPORE: Chicago corn eased on Wednesday to remain near contract lows as favourable crop weather was expected to continue in the U.S. Midwest, reinforcing the prospect of a bumper harvest. September corn on the Chicago Board of Trade was down 0.4% at $4.04-1/2 a bushel by 1132 GMT, holding near Tuesday's contract low of $4.00-1/4. New-crop December futures were 0.5% down at $4.20, also just off a Tuesday's low of $4.16-1/2. The U.S. Department of Agriculture surprised the market in a report on Monday, which showed better-than-anticipated corn crop conditions that were the best since 2018 for the time of year. With a mix of showers and warm weather set to continue, traders currently see limited threats to corn crops as they approach the crucial pollination stage. 'Corn prices are down as strong U.S. crop ratings and generally favourable weather will continue to put pressure on prices,' said one agricultural broker. Optimal U.S. growing conditions come as rival exporter Brazil is harvesting what some analysts anticipate will be a record second-corn crop. Corn eases on supply hopes, soybeans rise ahead of US reports The most-active CBOT soybeans lost 0.6% to $10.33-1/2 a bushel. Expectations of ample supplies have also weighed on the soybean market, with prices hitting their lowest since April in the past week. But the oilseed has steadied since Tuesday, with traders saying it found impetus in rising soyoil prices after a tax-cut and spending bill adopted by the U.S. Senate included a measure to restrict biofuel credits to North American feedstock. Soyoil is widely used to produce biodiesel. 'Soyoil is rallying due to the fact foreign feedstocks won't get subsidies,' a European trader said of the biofuel measure. CBOT soyoil was up 1.5% while Canadian canola futures were up 1.8%. In wheat, CBOT futures edged up 0.1% to $5.49-3/4 a bushel after touching a one-week peak. Traders say the approaching U.S. Independence Day holiday, which will see U.S. markets close on Friday, has encouraged investors to adjust their large short positions in wheat. Ample supplies were still hanging over the wheat market, with U.S. farmers progressing in harvest work and crops in Europe and the Black Sea region expected to be sizeable despite harsh weather including a heatwave in western Europe this week.

European shares rise; investors await signs on trade progress

European shares edged higher on Wednesday, led by banks, while investors assessed the prospects for trade deals ahead of US President Donald Trump's July 9 tariff deadline. The pan-European STOXX 600 index advanced 0.3% at 541.91 points, as of 0818 GMT. Other major regional indexes also traded higher. Trump, on Tuesday, said he was not considering an extension of the July 9 deadline for countries to negotiate trade deals with the US He expressed optimism about a potential trade deal with India but was skeptical about reaching a similar agreement with Japan. Meanwhile, European Union's trade chief is expected to hold negotiations this week in Washington to avert higher US tariffs. 'It looks like there is progress slowly being made (on trade deals)….whether this deal occurs by the 9th or after isn't that relevant as long as the trajectory is quite good.', said said Viresh Kanabar, macro strategist - asset allocation at Macro Hive. In the US, Senate Republicans passed Trump's massive tax-and-spending bill on Tuesday by the narrowest of margins. The legislation now heads to the House of Representatives for possible final approval. Banks led sectoral gains, rising 1.5%. European industrial miners rose 1.4%. Kanabar said that investors are seeing a source of good value in European banks, noting, 'the banking system has moved away from the pre-pandemic period of low returns and the consumer picture is much stronger'. European shares end marginally lower Among stocks, Spain's Banco Sabadell gained 5.1%, the most among bank stocks, after Santander said it had reached an agreement to buy its British unit TSB. Avanza Bank gained 7% after a report said that the Swedish financial group's founder is considering taking the company private. Shares in European renewable energy companies rose after the US Senate passed a revised budget bill that was more positive for the wind industry compared to an earlier version. Vestas rose 9.4% and was the top gainer in the STOXX 600. Orsted gained 4.1%, hitting a three-month high. Britain's Spectris gained 4.5% after the scientific instruments maker accepted an improved takeover offer from US private equity firm KKR. Conversely, Greggs fell 14.3% after the British baker and fast food chain said its annual operating profit could be modestly below last year's levels. Additionally, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday that the EU is blocking the UK government's attempts to join a pan-European trading bloc. Euro-zone unemployment data for May is due later in the day.

Oil rises on signs of strong demand

NEW YORK: Oil prices edged higher on Tuesday as investors took stock of positive demand indicators, while also treading cautiously ahead of an OPEC+ meeting to decide the group's August output policy. Brent crude was up 18 cents, or 0.3%, to $66.92 a barrel at 11:36 a.m. ET (1536 GMT), while US West Texas Intermediate crude was up 27 cents, or around 0.4%, to $65.38 a barrel. The gains were likely due to supportive data from a private-sector survey in China, which showed factory activity returned to expansion in June, said Randall Rothenberg, risk intelligence expert at US oil brokerage Liquidity Energy. Expectations that Saudi Arabia will raise its August crude oil prices for buyers in Asia to a four-month high, and firm premiums for Russian ESPO Blend crude oil, were also supporting the notion of robust demand, Rothenberg said. Meanwhile, oil's gains were kept in check by expectations that the OPEC+ group will raise its August crude oil output by an amount similar to the outsized hikes agreed in May, June, and July. Four OPEC+ sources told Reuters last week that the group plans to raise output by 411,000 bpd next month when it meets on July 6. 'All eyes will be on OPEC+'s decision over the weekend, when the group is expected to add another 411,000 bpd of production in an effort to gain more market share, primarily over the US shale producers,' StoneX energy analyst Alex Hodes wrote to clients. Besides gaining market share from US shale producers, which pumped oil at a record pace in April according to official data released on Monday, the group has also been trying to punish overproducing members. OPEC+ member Kazakhstan, one of world's 10 largest oil producers, raised oil production last month to match an all-time high, a source familiar with the data told Reuters on Tuesday. Saudi Arabia, the de facto leader of the OPEC+ group, raised its June crude oil exports to the fastest rate in a year, data from Kpler showed. 'These exports are flooding out even faster than the OPEC+ deal implies during the summer when peak domestic demand typically keeps oil supplies closer to home,' Hodes said. Investors are also watching trade negotiations ahead of US President Donald Trump's tariff deadline of July 9. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned that countries could be notified of sharply higher tariffs despite good-faith negotiations as that deadline approaches, when tariff rates are scheduled to revert from a temporary 10% level to the ones Trump announced on April 2 and then suspended. The European Union wants immediate relief from tariffs in key sectors as part of any trade deal with the US due by the July 9 deadline, EU diplomats told Reuters.
