Google officials depose before ED in online betting linked PMLA case
Executives from Meta did not depose, they said.
The ED had called the officials of the two tech giants, first on July 21 and later extended their deposition to July 28 as they sought more time to appear.
The agency may also record the statement of a designated "compliance officer" of Google under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) apart from obtaining some documents from the company on Monday, the sources said.
A Google spokesperson had last week told PTI in a statement that the company was "committed to keeping our platforms safe and secure, prohibiting the promotion of illegal gambling ads." "We are extending our full support and cooperation to investigating agencies to hold bad actors responsible and keep users safe," the spokesperson had said.
There was no response from Meta, formerly known as Facebook.
The federal agency is probing several platforms hosting illegal betting and gambling links, including alleged instances of advertisements placed for them on various social media outlets and app stores.
The tech giants are understood to have been called by the ED to know how such illegal platforms place ads on their portals.
Some actors, celebrities and sports persons are also under the scanner of the agency in these cases, and are expected to depose.
The ED has claimed that illegal online betting and gambling platforms cheated people of their hard-earned money, and also laundered and evaded taxes to the tune of several crores of rupees.
Google also said its "continuous AI advancements, complemented by human expertise, ensure all ads on our surfaces comply with local laws and our strict ad policies, and protect users from evolving threats." "Last year alone, we removed 247.4 million ads and suspended 2.9 million advertiser accounts in India," the firm had said.
The ED is investigating more than a dozen cases linked to illegal gambling and betting platforms across the country, including the Mahadev Online Book (MOB) app, whose main promoters hail from Chhattisgarh.

Akali Dal accuses rebel Manpreet Ayali of irregularities
Chandigarh: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Parambans Singh Romana on Wednesday challenged dissident party leader and Dakha legislator Manpreet Singh Ayali to deny the claims that he "got his land excluded from the land pooling scheme", while the adjoining land belonging to poor farmers was notified for acquisition. Addressing a press conference, Romana said Ayali was "badly compromised" and became "totally silent on the AAP govt's land grabbing scheme whereby it wanted to take forcible possession of 24,000 acres of land in Ludhiana district alone because the govt adjusted him and excluded all land controlled by him from the scheme". The SAD leader also asked Ayali to disclose what "settlement" he made with the AAP leadership to "secure this reprieve". Showing documents and Google images, Romana alleged that a chunk of land adjacent to Avanta Enclave owned by the Ayali family and another chunk was left out of the ambit of the land pooling scheme, even as the adjoining land belonging to poor farmers was included in the scheme. "The Ayali family developed a colony – Avanta Enclave over 28 acres of land during the course of which it committed several illegalities, including a built-up area of 70% instead of 55% as mandated under law," he said. He said: "Vigilance inquiries were held by the previous Congress govt and now the AAP govt as well, and everything is verified." TikTok launches crowd-sourced debunking tool ‘Footnotes' in US
TikTok on Wednesday rolled out a crowd-sourced debunking system in the United States, becoming the latest tech platform to adopt a community-driven approach to combating online misinformation. TikTok said nearly 80,000 US-based users, who have maintained an account for at least six months, have qualified as Footnotes contributors.(Representative image/unsplash) Footnotes, a feature that the popular video-sharing app began testing in April, allows vetted users to suggest written context for content that might be wrong or misleading -- similar to Community Notes on Meta and X. "Footnotes draws on the collective knowledge of the TikTok community by allowing people to add relevant information to content," Adam Presser, the platform's head of operations and trust and safety, said in a blog post. "Starting today, US users in the Footnotes pilot program can start to write and rate footnotes on short videos, and our US community will begin to see the ones rated as helpful -- and rate them, too," he added. TikTok said nearly 80,000 US-based users, who have maintained an account for at least six months, have qualified as Footnotes contributors. The video-sharing app has some 170 million US users. TikTok said the feature will augment the platform's existing integrity measures such as labeling content that cannot be verified and partnering with fact-checking organizations, such as AFP, to assess the accuracy of posts on the platform. The crowd-sourced verification system was popularized by Elon Musk's platform X, but researchers have repeatedly questioned its effectiveness in combating falsehoods. Earlier this month, a study found more than 90 percent of X's Community Notes are never published, highlighting major limits in efficacy. The Digital Democracy Institute of the Americas (DDIA) study analyzed the entire public dataset of 1.76 million notes published by X between January 2021 and March 2025. TikTok cautioned it may take some time for a footnote to become public, as contributors get started and become more familiar with the feature. "The more footnotes get written and rated on different topics, the smarter and more effective the system becomes," Presser said. Tech platforms increasingly view the community-driven model as an alternative to professional fact-checking. Earlier this year, Meta ended its third-party fact-checking program in the United States, with chief executive Mark Zuckerberg saying it had led to "too much censorship." The decision was widely seen as an attempt to appease President Donald Trump, whose conservative base has long complained that fact-checking on tech platforms serves to curtail free speech and censor right-wing content. Professional fact-checkers vehemently reject the claim. As an alternative, Zuckerberg said Meta's platforms, Facebook and Instagram, would use "Community Notes." Studies have shown Community Notes can work to dispel some falsehoods, like vaccine misinformation, but researchers have long cautioned that it works best for topics where there is broad consensus. Some researchers have also cautioned that Community Notes users can be motivated to target political opponents by partisan beliefs.
