Endumeni gets smart with rollout of R4.6m prepaid meter system
The project aims to curb electricity theft while giving consumers better control over their energy usage.

A stakeholder meeting was held at the Moth Hall on June 17, where ward councillors and municipal officials were joined by representatives from Conlog – the Durban-based company awarded the R4.6 million tender to supply and install the new meters.
The project is being monitored by the National Treasury and was gazetted officially, with regular audits to be conducted by both the Treasury and Conlog.
The new meters will be linked to a mobile app, allowing residents and business owners to monitor electricity usage and make purchases directly via their smartphones.
The installation will take place in phases, with each ward receiving advance notice through WhatsApp and community networks.
Ward councillors will receive training to help residents understand how to use the system.
Conlog has committed to sharing information via social media and distributing multilingual pamphlets to ensure that all consumers are fully informed.
Temporary jobs will be open per ward to assist contractors with the rollout. Applicants need to be qualified at least N3 to N6 in electrical engineering.

Alpine appoint Nielsen to run F1 team day-to-day
Renault-owned Alpine appointed former sporting director Steve Nielsen on Friday to handle the day-to-day running of the Formula One team after the departure of principal Oliver Oakes. The Enstone-based team, effectively run by executive adviser and former principal Flavio Briatore who will continue to have overall charge, said Nielsen would start work as MD on September 1. Nielsen has most recently been working for Liberty Media-owned Formula One, after a brief period as sporting director at the governing FIA. He was also sporting director when Renault won championships in 2005 and 2006 under Briatore. Alpine, last in the constructors' championship but switching to Mercedes engines next year, also appointed Kris Midgley as head of aerodynamic development. Midgley previously worked at Ferrari as principal aerodynamicist and is also returning to the Enstone factory after a stint from 2007 to 2013. Oakes, the team's fifth boss in four turbulent seasons, resigned in May for personal reasons after being appointed in July last year.

Morocco to resume sukuk issuance, says central bank governor
Morocco is preparing its second Islamic bond, or sukuk, issuance since 2018, Central Bank governor Abdellatif Jouahri said on Thursday. The central bank and the ministry of finance are reviewing the technical aspects of the issuance, Jouahri told reporters without offering details on the amount of the bond. The Higher Council of Ulema, Morocco's top religious authority, will assess whether the issuance complies with sharia, he said on the sidelines of the annual meeting of the Islamic Financial Services Board (IFSB), a Malaysia-based international standards-setting body that promotes Islamic finance. Morocco's first sukuk issuance in 2018 raised 1-billion dirhams (R1.95bn) and matured in 2023. The country permitted Islamic finance, locally known as participatory banking, in 2017 as part of a wider plan to bolster financial market liquidity and attract foreign investment.

GWIB meeting ignites inner child
GLENWOOD Women in Business (GWIB) were encouraged to bring out their inner child when they gathered for their monthly meeting at The Grand White on Friday with Nicola van Turha of Nicky's Fluid Art as co-host. Under the theme 'Igniting Your Inner Child', the women were asked to bring a childhood photo to remind them of their carefree younger selves. The atmosphere was filled with warmth, laughter, and genuine connection as the women from all walks of business came together to share, connect, and be inspired. 'The event opened with a touching activity where attendees brought photos of themselves from before the age of 10 — a gentle reminder to reconnect with their younger selves. A fun and interactive guessing game followed, where women matched the childhood photo to the person. When guessed correctly, the woman would stand, introduce herself and her business, and share a bit of her journey. This activity sparked laughter, storytelling, and heartfelt moments of connection,' said host Janine De Jesus, who delivered an uplifting message about embracing the unexpected. Two lucky attendees were chosen in a draw to take part in a live painting experience, creating art in motion that symbolised creativity, expression, and flow. The GWIB meets once a month at The Grand White on 1 Jacques Road. It was formed more than five years ago as a space to empower and uplift women in business. In its early days, the group gathered regularly, once a month or every second month, at Glenwood-based venues, creating a close-knit, supportive network. Although the momentum slowed down around the time of the Covid-19 pandemic, the spirit never disappeared, and this year it was relaunched with renewed energy and purpose.
