The clones of Bruce the shark

The only scare in this movie is the scuba diving photographer's attack, a scene lifted by John Sayles three years later for 'Alligator.'

Roy Scheider, Lorraine Gary, and Murray Hamilton reprise their roles as the Brodys and the Mayor of Amity. Screenwriter Carl Gottlieb and the original's uncredited co-screenwriter, Howard Sackler, tackle the script. In the director's chair is Jeannot Szwarc, whose prior film, 'Bug,' starred pyromaniacal killer insects. (They blow up real good!)

This is the best of the sequels, which isn't saying much. But it has one of the greatest taglines ever slapped on a poster: 'Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water.'
In the 'Jaws' canon, this film kicked off the shark's obsession with getting revenge on Chief Brody's family. His adolescent kids Mike and Sean are trapped on a boat while Bruce tries to eat them. They're so obnoxious you'll wish he had.

'Jaws 3-D' (1983)
I could still perceive 3-D back in 1983, which was a blessing and a curse. The early 1980s gave us endless characters in 3-D: Jason from 'Friday the 13th,' the 'Amityville Horror' house, and yes, Bruce the Shark. Mike Brody is now played by Dennis Quaid. He works at SeaWorld alongside
This abomination exists solely for the 3-D effects, which look hilarious in 2-D. Bruce attacks SeaWorld at one point, busting through the protective glass tank and sending glass into the audience's lap. In the must-see climax, the shark gets blown up, sending his jaws flying out of the screen. It looks as if Bruce sneezed and his gigantic dentures flew out.

'Jaws: The Revenge' (1987)
Widely considered the worst film in the series (sorry, folks, 'Jaws 3-D' deserves that title), this was the first PG-13 'Jaws' film. Lorraine Gary returns as Mrs. Brody. So does the incarnation of the shark from the original 'Jaws.' It has a vendetta against the Brody clan, and who can blame it? '[W]hat shark wouldn't want revenge against the survivors of the men who killed it?' asked Roger Ebert in his brutally funny
Sean Brody gets his arm ripped off before being devoured. As a result, Mrs. Brody goes out of her way to protect her remaining son, Michael, including shooting at the shark with a pistol.
Another Michael, Michael Caine, infamously couldn't accept his Oscar for 'Hannah and Her Sisters' because he was on Martha's Vineyard filming this movie. Caine cops to never having seen the finished product. 'However, I have seen the house that it built, and it is terrific!' he said.

The only bright spot here is Mario van Peebles's Rasta character, Jake, who comes complete with a Ja-
fake
-an accent and dreads. Jake was popular enough for the studio to reshoot his final encounter with Bruce. In the movie, he dies; on VHS and DVD, he miraculously survives. Though impaled in the movie version, Bruce gets a far more ignoble demise in the home video version—he simply
explodes for no reason
.

Smaller screen + ‘bigger boat' = ‘Jaws'?

Back in 1975, Hollywood still primarily relied on print advertising, word of mouth, and trailers to generate publicity for movie openings. Universal, the studio that released 'Jaws,' tried a different approach. Just prior to the movie's premiere, it ran $700,000-worth of ads on prime-time television. That would be $4.2 million today. Not much compared to the $125 worldwide million budgeting for 'F1®', but big bucks back then -- and a gamble. The gamble definitely paid off. The phenomenal commercial success of 'Jaws' -- it took less than three months for Steven Spielberg's movie to overtake 'The Godfather' as the top-grossing film of all time -- meant that Hollywood wasted little time adopting TV advertising as its preferred method for publicizing high-profile releases. Fifty years later, the media landscape is much altered, with TV now an umbrella term for network and cable and streaming. What hasn't changed is the TV-centric ad strategy pioneered by 'Jaws.' Advertisement The other way television was important in the success of 'Jaws' was its having provided the training ground for its young director. Spielberg's feature-film debut had come the year before, with 'The Sugarland Express.' But TV was where he learned his craft. Spielberg directed episodes of several network series -- 'Night Gallery,' 'Marcus Welby, M.D.,' The Name of the Game," 'The Psychiatrist,' 'Columbo,' and 'Owen Marshall, Counselor at Law' -- and three television movies: 'Duel,' 'Something Evil,' and 'Savage.' 'Duel' made such an impression, Universal released an extended version in theaters. Ocean Ramsey, with friend, in "Shark Whisperer." Netflix Of course the relationship between 'Jaws' and TV would work both ways. 'Jaws' certified shark star power -- and television hasn't been shy about exploiting it. So maybe you've heard of Shark Week? The 37th iteration arrives on the Discovery Channel July 20. In the meantime, Netflix rolls out not one but two shark documentaries Mark Feeney can be reached at

Fireworks designer Matt Shea orchestrates the skies over the Boston Pops July 4th celebration

Last week, Shea was in Somerville setting up the first of many displays of the season. If Boston's Fourth 'is the matriarch of fireworks shows,' he said, 'think of this as a baby brother.' Making a living : As Pyrotecnico regional manager, Shea works in sales and oversees some of the more than 200 fireworks displays the company stages in the Northeast this week. Empty mortars wait for firework shells as fireworks company Pyrotecnico prepares for a show. Danielle Parhizkaran/Globe Staff How he started : In 1991, Shea helped Steve Pelkey of 'I started doing what a lot of the people who work for me today do,' Shea said. 'They're part-time hobbyists. They get paid. It's a part-time job for them.' In 1998 he joined Pelkey's company. 'Pyromusicals were new, and I started working with clients on their music. Then it became understanding the scripting side,' Shea said. 'I fell into the design part just because I was on the ground floor.' Advertisement Pelkey sold the company to Pyrotecnico in 2022. Danielle Parhizkaran/Globe Staff What he makes : 'We design oohs and ahhs,' Shea said. Materials : Firework shells are humble-looking paper packages handmade in China. 'A shell is basically a papier-mâché ball,' said Shea. 'Inside of it are what we call stars. They're black powder that's mixed with different metal salts to create the different colors.' 'They're kind of like little Everlasting Gobstoppers,' he said. Shells holding fireworks are loaded into mortars as the fireworks company Pyrotecnico prepares for a show. Danielle Parhizkaran/Globe Staff How he works : To prep, Shea revisits last year's show. 'I watch the commands, the cues, the types of fireworks I used, and the sequences,' he said. Then he goes to work on the new one. After about 100hours, 'I submit it to my team. The team builds it, puts it in boxes, packages it, and it sits in our magazine.' In late June, he confirms the music is in place. 'Then I spend probably about eight hours uninterrupted, and I just clean it up, clean it up, clean it up.' This week, the barges go in the water Monday. It takes a couple of days to load shells into mortars, and Shea's team leaves wiggle room. 'We always want to make sure we have the 3rd of July, and we're 100% ready to go,' he said. 'Before you can figure out what you're going to put in the sky,' Shea said, 'you have to know what's on the ground that's going to shoot it.'
