Hottest-ever start to Wimbledon with 29.7C recorded
Temperatures reached a provisional high of 29.7C at Kew Gardens in west London on Monday afternoon, surpassing the previous record of 29.3C set in June 2001.
Spectators queued from the early hours to enter the All England Club in south-west London, with many using fans, umbrellas and sunscreen to cope with the heat.
Vicki Broad, 57, a retired nurse from Swansea, who was the first person in the queue, said: 'The sun has been tough but we're in the shade now.'
Paul Jackson, from Stockport, told the PA news agency: 'We were a bit worried about the heat, but it's been manageable.'
'We've been drinking water, wearing hats, and making the most of the shade.'
The competition has drawn crowds from across the globe – some managing the weather better than others.
Maria Iniesta, 47, a physician from Madrid living in Houston, joked: 'It's been funny to watch the British people sweating – it's been easy for us.'

Anthony Joshua and promoter Eddie Hearn lead a star-studded royal box at Wimbledon amid talk of long-awaited Tyson Fury fight
A smiling Anthony Joshua put talk of a potential fight with Tyson Fury to one side as he took his place in Wimbledon 's royal box on Friday. Alongside boxing promoter Eddie Hearn, Joshua led a star-studded box which also featured presenter Gary Lineker, TV chef Mary Berry and astronaut Tim Peake. The boxing duo got an invite for a bumper day of action on Centre Court, where Joshua will see Emma Raducanu take on women's world No 1 Aryna Sabalenka. Joshua has not been in the boxing ring since he was knocked out by Daniel Dubois, back in September. The 35-year-old had elbow surgery in May and is looking to make a return to the ring at some stage later this year. While there is a great deal of excitement around Joshua's return, his next fight still appears unlikely to be Fury. Anthony Joshua was in high spirits as he headed to Wimbledon's royal box on Friday morning Saudi Arabia's boxing kingpin Turki Alalshikh recently announced that Fury will make a spectacular return to boxing next year. Alalshikh said that Fury has given him his word that he will step back in the ring, which has since sparked speculation of a third showdown with Oleksandr Usyk. Fury hung up his gloves in January - for the fifth time in his career - a few weeks after losing to Usyk in a rematch for the unified heavyweight world titles. The Gypsy King, 36, has insisted that his retirement is for good but in April he fuelled hope of a comeback after linking back up with his trainer SugarHill Steward and there remains hope that a Battle of Britain bout against Joshua could eventually come to pass.

Russell has popped up into second, within a tenth of Leclerc. 1:06PM FP1 - Leclerc moves fastest He has to negotiate some traffic towards the end of the lap but still finishes 0.183sec faster than Piastri (below), who had marginally improved on Norris's previous best time. 1:03PM FP1 - Not a tremendous improvement from Norris on the softs He goes fastest but only by 0.148sec over Hadjar's previous best. A few other soft runners not exactly setting the world alight but let's see what the Ferraris and Piastri can do. Looks promising so far. 1:02PM FP1 - There is another junior driver in this session Nico Hulkenberg has given up his Sauber to Estonian Paul Aron who is in fact an Alpine junior driver. Make of that what you will. He is currently 15th, 1.334sec off the pace. Soft tyre runs have now begun, so times should improve.
