Agricultural contaminants in drinking water linked to higher preterm birth rates: Study

Exposure to a common agricultural contaminant in drinking water, even in small doses, may be linked to increased risks of preterm birth, a new study has found.
The pollutant, called nitrate, is also associated with low birth weight in infants whose mothers consumed affected water during pregnancy, according to the study, published on Wednesday in PLOS Water.
While nitrate is a naturally occurring compound that is necessary to plants and animals for survival, its widespread use in inorganic fertilizers has increased the compound's presence in the environment.
When excess nitrate is consumed by humans, usually via drinking water contaminated by agricultural runoff, the chemical can interfere with the blood's ability to carry oxygen, the study explained.
'There is no safe level of prenatal nitrate exposure,' author Jason Semprini, an assistant professor in public health economics at Des Moines University, said in a statement.
While the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) set a maximum threshold for the compound's presence in drinking water in 1992, there has been no official recognition of adverse birth outcomes as an associated outcome.
As such, Semprini set out to evaluate possible risks — evaluating 357,741 birth records from Iowa from 1970 to 1988. Linking each birth to county-level nitrate measurements taken within 30 days of conception, he observed that concentrations rose about 8 percent per year.
After controlling for seasonal variables and other factors, Semprini found that early prenatal exposure above 0.1 milligrams per liter — just 1 percent of the current EPA limit — was linked to a rise in preterm birth incidence.
Meanwhile, early prenatal exposure to nitrate at levels greater than 5 milligrams per liter — half of the EPA limit — was associated with an increased likelihood of low birthweight, according to the study.
The research identified no additional risk on birth outcomes at elevated nitrate levels: those greater than the federal regulatory bar.
Although Semprini acknowledged that the scope of the study was limited, due to its focus on one state, he said that more recent data from other states and sources could help bolster the strength of the connection.
Going forward, he expressed hopes that the research could help inform the reevaluation of current federal standards, which remain unchanged since 1992 — despite a surge in nitrate levels in groundwater nationwide.
The current threshold, Semprini continued, could be 'insufficient for protecting the in-utero transmission of water-based nitrate during the first trimester of pregnancy.'
While cities nationwide have implemented pilot programs to reduce nitrate contamination in water, such solutions can be expensive and would benefit from 'rigorous cost-benefit analyses' that offer quantifiable support for these initiatives, according to the study.
Estimating that the impact from prenatal exposure to nitrate is equivalent to about 15 percent of the harm caused by cigarettes, he pointed out that these pollutants do not receive 15 percent of the attention granted to smoking.
'Ignoring the potential harm from lower levels of prenatal nitrate exposure, the current regulatory standards are not adequately protecting America's mothers or children,' Semprini added.

For those still experiencing the oppressive heat, here's some tips for how to find your own bit of relief. The balance between staying cool and keeping energy costs low can be tricky amid a heat wave, when sitting in front of a blasting air conditioner is oh-so-appealing. The Environmental Protection Agency's energy-efficiency program Energy Star recommends setting the thermostat to 78 degrees when you wake up during summer months to maximize efficiency. Michael Webber, a professor of engineering who studies energy at University of Texas at Austin, said pre-cooling your home by running the air conditioning more in the morning and evening, and less in the afternoon when temperatures are at their peak can go a long way, too. 'Picking the right temperature and cooling your house at the best times, these are things you can do for free essentially,' to stay comfortable and save on energy costs, Webber said. Portable electric fans can also help make a room feel cooler, but the National Weather Service recommends pointing them away from yourself when the room temperature is higher than 90 degrees. The dry blowing air can lead to dehydration, the agency says. If you don't have air conditioning, or if it isn't working, libraries, shopping malls, grocery stores and public cooling centers can also offer relief from scorching temperatures. You might want to think twice before ordering that large iced coffee – or margarita pitcher. Hydration is the name of the game during a heat wave and Betsy Koickel, chief medical officer at GoHealth Urgent Care, said 'excessive alcohol or caffeine intake can increase the risk of dehydration.' The American Red Cross said the average person should drink about three-fourths a gallon of water a day. Koickel recommended drinking water before you feel thirsty and replenishing with electrolyte replacements, such as Gatorade, especially if you plan to exercise or sit outside for extended periods. Consistent water intake may be particularly important for people taking medications that can cause dehydration, including some blood pressure drugs, antidepressants and antibiotics. She also said easy-to-digest foods, like fruits and salads, can help with hydration. If you need to wander outside, you can protect your skin by frequently reapplying sunscreen, wearing a loose, brimmed hat and choosing light-colored clothing. The EPA recommends avoiding direct exposure to the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun's rays are the strongest and taking frequent breaks in the shade to cool off. In extreme cases, intense heat can lead to sickness as your body struggles to regulate its temperature. Early symptoms of heat injury, including thirst, lightheadedness or a headache, may develop if you don't properly hydrate, Koickel said. Dark-colored or foul-smelling urine may be another sign of severe dehydration. 'If you don't take steps to rehydrate at that point, it can lead to heat exhaustion. You could faint. You could start to experience some severe muscle cramps, excessive sweating, and then if that's not taken care of, it can eventually lead to heat stroke.' Heat stroke can occur when someone's body temperature reaches 100.4 degrees. If heat illness reaches that point, she recommended calling 911 or finding immediate medical attention. (Special to the American Press) The energy at Sowela Technical Community College Oakdale campus on Friday morning was energized as 40 teachers prepared to show off their energy-themed research projects. Over the past week, teachers from Allen Parish and the surrounding school districts participated in the STEM Energy Professional Development Program, a collaboration between the Sowela, Allen Parish School Board, Exxon Mobil, Rice University's Tapia Center and Future Use of Energy in Louisiana (FUEL). The participating teachers are from all disciplines, from high school technology educators to elementary English teachers. They spent their week developing a project on one of four energy-related topics: wind power, solar power, carbon capture sequestration and heat transfer. Led by facilitators from the Tapia Center, the teachers participated in hands-on activities relating to the themes before splitting off into groups to choose one topic to center their project around, all while getting paid. The end result is not only a complete project, but a fully-developed and adaptable curriculum, complete with lesson plans for four lessons, rubrics and every necessary documentation to implement the project in any classroom. Heather Cross is an educator at Fairview High School who teaches gifted courses and middle school English language arts. Like her peers, she was encouraged to sign up for the professional development course by her administrators. She wasn't fully aware of the scope of work she would need to complete at the STEM Energy Professional Development Program Showcase, which she called an 'amazing' experience. Her group developed a project about carbon capture sequestration, with a focus on scientific research. The curriculum will encourage students to research carbon sequestration and form their own scenic-backed opinions. The project culminates into a hands-on model that lets students simulate the process of carbon sequestration. The work done by the teachers is a step to make STEM more accessible and intersectional for students. She said the reality is that STEM education does not have to be expensive or exclusive. Since her group's project is research-based, she will be able to incorporate the lessons into her ELA class by focusing the lessons on research, fact-validation and claim-building. 'You don't have to have the fanciest equipment or spend the most money,' she said. 'With a little bit of innovation and creativity, you can make STEM happen within your classroom.' Mike Butler, public and government affairs manager, ExxonMobil, said STEM is at the core of ExxonMobil's community outreach, and the work of the teachers is 'truly inspirational.' The projects they completed lets students know they, too, can succeed in an industrial STEM field, he said. 'We believe that exposing students to science, technology, engineering and mathematics is a way to inspire these young minds, and that anyone can have a career, a meaningful future.' The program was funded by a $100,000 grant from FUEL, a new state coalition which resulted from a large-scale grant from the National Science Foundation. The goal of FUEL is to compete for and secure $160 million in energy innovation investment in Louisiana over the next 10 years, which is key to the state's future prosperity, said Lacy McManus, director of workforce development, FUEL. Over six months, FUEL has worked to determine which 'levers' need to be pulled to accomplish that goal, and educating the workforce is a priority. 'When it comes to workforce development, every single one of you (teachers) is one of those levers,' she said. 'Our teachers and your understanding of what is happening overall in Louisiana in the energy space, the ability to communicate that back to your students, to your administrators, that is absolutely vital.' Sowela is an institution known for simultaneously developing a trained workforce and employment pipelines for several employment sectors — including industry, one of Louisiana's main economic drivers. But Sowela does more than just provide technical education, said Sowela Chancellor Niel Aispenwall. The college is on a mission to create a culture of continuous learning. 'We also encourage our students not to end with us, continue their education and get as much knowledge as they can.' Michael Romine, who is always seeking opportunities to learn more about incorporating STEM into the classroom, said this program was right up his alley. He teaches gifted students in grades second through eighth, and algebra and pre-calculus dual enrollment college courses for Jefferson Davis parish schools. Over the week, he was able to learn about problem-based learning, where students identify a problem and conceive a solution. 'I've been reading about problem-based learning my whole career, but I never really understood it until this week,' he said. 'They did a fantastic job of developing the programming channels. … I'm already starting to think of other things I can do in the future.' Both Cross and Romane agreed that the STEM Energy Professional Development Program was a unique professional development opportunity. 'Typically professional development presents you with a skill,' Cross said. 'However, with this professional development … it's ready to go. If I want to teach this the first day of school, I can teach this the first day of school.' The ready-to-go curriculum is just one of the benefits, Romane added. The teachers had an opportunity to bond with their peers, network and grow as professionals in an exciting and collaborative space. 'We've got a diverse group of teachers in there. We've got a teacher who taught English now doing science. We've got new teachers. We've got new teachers,' he said. 'It they do something like this again, I'd love to do it again.'
