The flash floods killed at least 135 people in Texas over the holiday weekend, with most deaths along the Guadalupe River in Kerr County, about 60 miles (100 kilometres) northwest of San Antonio.

Just before daybreak on July 4, the destructive, fast-moving waters rose 26 feet (8 metres) on the Guadalupe, washing away homes and vehicles.
The floods laid waste to the Hill Country, a popular tourist destination where campers seek out spots along the river amid the rolling landscape. It is naturally prone to flash flooding because its dry, dirt-packed soil cannot soak up heavy rain.

Vacation cabins, youth camps campgrounds fill the riverbanks and hills of Kerr County, including Camp Mystic, a century-old Christian summer camp for girls. Located in a low-lying area of a region known as 'flash flood alley,' Camp Mystic lost at least 27 campers and counsellors.

The flooding was far more severe than the 100-year event envisioned by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, experts said, and it moved so quickly in the middle of the night that it caught many off guard in a county that lacked a warning system.

In Kerrville, about 100 miles (160 kilometres) west of Austin, local officials have come under scrutiny over whether residents were adequately warned about the rising waters.

President Donald Trump and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott have pushed back aggressively against questions about how well local authorities responded to forecasts of heavy rain and the first reports of flash flooding.

Crews have been searching for victims using helicopters, boats and drones. Earlier efforts were hampered by rain forecasts, leading some crews to hold off or stop because of worries about more flooding.

Two teens rescued after being blown into bay by strong winds: Police
Police in Barrie rescued two teenage girls who were reportedly blown into Kempenfelt Bay by the strong winds of Thursday evening's storm. According to the Barrie Police Service (BPS), officers were called to the incident at around 6:30 p.m. Police say the two young girls were not wearing lifejackets and could not swim but were able to use their phone to call 911. At first, the girls reportedly told police that they were in an inflatable floatation device near the Centennial Beach fountain when strong wind gusts carried them nearly 100 feet from shore. Police say they received a second call from a nearby witness who told them that the girls were in a single-person floatation device, they were blown into open water, and that they were not wearing lifejackets. A third call was then received by the BPS, reporting that someone on a personal watercraft was helping the teens while they were in the water. It was later confirmed by police that the girls made it safely to shore in the Tiffin Boat Launch area. 'The BPS wish to acknowledge the callers who contacted police and would like to thank the personal watercraft operator who brought the girls to shore before the storm hit,' said a BPS media officer in a news release. Police remind those who are not strong swimmers to always wear lifejackets while in the water and to be aware of inclement weather conditions.

TV footage showed flames and smoke billowing into the sky close to high-rise apartment blocks in Antalya, where local and foreign visitors flock during the summer months. Homes were evacuated in the city center and the outlying district of Aksu as the fire advanced, privately owned news agency DHA reported. Firefighters struggled to extinguish the blazes before strong winds could spread the fire, which closed a major coastal road. Further along the coast, homes in the city of Manavgat were also threatened. Local residents with hoses and buckets rushed to assist firefighters as water-dropping helicopters and planes also battled the flames. Police water cannons and municipal water trucks were also enlisted in firefighting efforts. Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said Friday that Izmir and Bilecik provinces had been declared 'disaster areas affecting public life,' one step down from the most serious level of emergency. Between June 27 and July 24, residents from 120 neighborhoods nationwide were evacuated, Yerlikaya added, and more than 12,000 workers under the ministry's authority, such as police and rescue staff, had fought the fires. In a social media post, the minister said 311 homes had been destroyed or heavily damaged during the month-long blazes and 85 temporary housing units were set up across three western provinces for those made homeless. Turkiye has faced widespread outbreaks of forest fires since late June. Thirteen people have died, including 10 firefighters killed Thursday in a fire in Eskisehir, western Turkiye. Temperatures above seasonal norms have been exacerbated by strong winds and dry conditions, resulting in dozens of wildfires. East of Antalya, fires broke out in Adana and Mersin on Friday. Heavy rain traps cars in Quebec City underpass, triggers power outages across province
Flooding and power outages are causing headaches in some parts of Quebec after summer storms and rainfalls. In Quebec City, a pair of vehicles are stuck in an underpass that quickly filled up with water. The city received up to 50 millimetres of water in just two hours this morning. According to Quebec CIty police, one of the drivers had to be rescued from the roof of his car. No injuries are being reported, but 3rd Avenue West is closed between 41st and 46th streets. Meanwhile, thousands of Hydro-Québec clients are without electricity after heavy summer storms last night. As of 8:30 a.m., there were just under 40,000 clients without power, with more than half of them in the Outaouais region. In the Laurentians, there were more than 7,500 without power. In the Quebec City region, that total was just over 5,000.
