Punjab CM invites Turkish universities to expand footprint in Pakistan at Antalya Diplomacy Forum
The annual forum, now in its fourth edition, is hosted under the patronage of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and aims to foster dialogue and cooperation on pressing global issues. This year's theme, 'Reclaiming Diplomacy in a Fragmented World,' has drawn world leaders, diplomats and civil society actors to discuss solutions to global challenges, including education, conflict and development.
Before her address, Sharif met with Erdoğan and First Lady Emine Erdoğan. The Turkish president warmly welcomed and thanked her for participating in the forum.
'I take this opportunity to invite the top universities of Türkiye to expand their presence in Punjab, to create more centers of eminence, more centers of excellence where our youth can learn, grow and lead,' she said while addressing the gathering.
'Let us ensure that our collaboration and exchange programs become the foundation for a brighter, human-centric future, a future that both Pakistanis and Turkish generations will be proud to inherit,' she added.
The Punjab chief minister emphasized her provincial government's commitment to transforming education landscape.
She outlined several reform initiatives, including the upgradation of more than 4,000 primary schools into elementary schools to combat generational dropouts, particularly in rural areas where children often leave school after Class 5 due to the absence of nearby middle schools.
'This upgradation is not a token gesture. It is a systemic intervention,' she said, adding that digital learning rooms were also being established in over 6,000 schools across the province to integrate technology with pedagogy.
Sharif also spoke of reviving non-functional schools and turning them into 'sanctuaries of learning,' while highlighting a new nutrition program launched in underserved districts to address malnutrition among schoolchildren, especially girls.
'My government's foremost commitment is to women and children, to education and opportunity, and to dignity and justice,' she said. 'And it is in these arenas that I seek to construct a unique model of governance that is both ethical and effective.'
The chief minister further announced the creation of Pakistan's first Artificial Intelligence University in Lahore and the development of the Nawaz Sharif Internet City, a hub intended to foster innovation and IT-based learning that is named after her father.
'We are recruiting about 30,000 new school teachers entirely on merit,' she informed, noting that the province had also established a dedicated institution for teacher training and curriculum development aligned with 21st-century learning goals.
Sharif positioned herself during the speech not only as a political leader but also as 'an ambassador of education,' vowing to ensure that 'no child is left behind due to poverty, geography, gender or social restrictions.'

PM approves modern digital ecosystem for Pakistan revenue watchdog to increase collection
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved the development of a modern, world-class digital ecosystem in the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and directed hiring of world-renowned experts, his office said, in a bid to increase revenue collection. The prime minister issued the directives at a meeting he presided over to review ongoing reforms in the FBR, during which officials briefed participants about linking FBR data to a single hub for real-time monitoring. The reforms are tied to the government's economic stabilization agenda and structural benchmarks under a $7 billion International Monetary Fund (IMF) program. Pakistan has one of the lowest tax-to-GDP ratios in the region, despite a population of more than 240 million. Speaking at the meeting, Sharif said the country's economy was moving in the right direction, thanks to the ongoing FBR reforms, and the government could only reduce tax on common people by increasing the tax base and eliminating informal economy. "An entire digital ecosystem should be created to strengthen the new [FBR] system," he said. "All data from raw material production and import, product manufacturing to consumer purchases should be linked to a single system." In June, Sharif's government set a record-high tax collection target of Rs14.13 trillion ($47.4 billion) for the fiscal year 2025–26, marking a 9 percent increase from the previous year. Officials say meeting this goal is essential to reducing reliance on external debt and ensuring long-term fiscal sustainability. The prime minister said this consolidated data, collected under the new FBR system, should be used for economic, strategic decision-making. "The system should be made so effective that the entire value chain can be directly monitored digitally," the prime minister added. Earlier this month, the FBR launched simplified digital tax returns for salaried individuals, aimed at increasing tax compliance and widening the narrow tax base.

Pakistan PM assures continued support in Aafia Siddiqui case during meeting with her sister
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday met with Dr. Fauzia Siddiqui, the sister of Pakistani neuroscientist Dr. Aafia Siddiqui who is jailed in the US, and reaffirmed his government's commitment to providing all possible legal and diplomatic support in the high-profile case, the PM's Office said. Siddiqui, a Pakistani national, is currently serving an 86-year prison sentence in the United States after being convicted in 2010 of attempted murder of US personnel in Afghanistan. Her trial and detention have long sparked public outcry in Pakistan, with successive governments under pressure to secure her repatriation. 'The government is in no way negligent in the matter of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui,' Sharif was quoted as saying in a statement issued by his office after he met Fauzia and assured her that his administration would 'continue to provide every possible legal and diplomatic assistance' in her sister's case. The Prime Minister's Office said Sharif had earlier written a letter to then-US President Joe Biden to urge action in the matter. He has now also formed a special committee, chaired by Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, to pursue further progress on the case. 'The committee will remain in contact with Dr. Fauzia Siddiqui and work to provide any necessary support,' the statement said. In October 2024, Sharif wrote a letter to Biden calling for Siddiqui's release and highlighting concerns about her treatment in prison. He also warned that her deteriorating physical and mental health could lead to self-harm. This January, as he stepped down as US president, Biden rejected a petition seeking clemency for the jailed academic. Siddiqui was arrested in July 2008 by Afghan police who said she was carrying two pounds (900 grams) of sodium cyanide and crumpled notes referring to mass casualty attacks and New York landmarks. The day after her arrest, according to the indictment, Siddiqui grabbed an M-4 rifle in her interrogation room and started shooting while yelling 'death to America,' the trial jury heard. No US agents or soldiers were hit, but Siddiqui was shot and wounded in response, according to US prosecutors. She was subsequently convicted in 2010 by a New York federal jury of attempted murder, armed assault and other charges. Siddiqui was never charged with links to terrorism. Siddiqui's family says she was visiting Pakistan in 2003 when she was abducted with her three children by Pakistani intelligence officials and handed to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), which took her to Afghanistan. Pakistan's intelligence agencies deny the claims.

As political protests stir, Pakistan PM reassures EU on human rights linked to GSP+
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday held a meeting with outgoing European Union (EU) Ambassador Riina Kionka and discussed with her the EU's Generalized Scheme of Preference Plus (GSP+) framework and "domestic political developments," Sharif's office said. The scheme grants beneficiary countries' exports duty-free access to the European market in exchange for voluntarily agreeing to implement 27 international core conventions, including those on human and civil rights. Sharif's office did not elaborate on which political developments they discussed, but the development comes after the announcement of an anti-government protest movement by jailed former premier Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. The PTI recently announced the protest drive to secure the release of Khan, who has been in jail for nearly two years on a slew of charges. The party has staged several protests in recent years demanding an audit of Feb. 2024 general election along with Khan's release, saying the polls had been rigged. Pakistani authorities deny the allegations and accuse the PTI of attempting to disrupt its efforts to achieve sustainable economic growth. The EU last year raised also concerns over the sentencing of PTI activists by Pakistani military courts over attacks on government and military installations in May 2023, noting that Islamabad had agreed to effectively implement 27 core conventions, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), to continue benefitting from the GSP+ scheme. "The Prime Minister underscored the significance of EU as one of Pakistan's largest trading partners and reaffirmed the Government's commitment to the GSP Plus scheme, which had proved to be mutually beneficial for both sides," Sharif's office said. The EU is one of Pakistan's most important trading partners, accounting for 12.4% of Pakistan's total trade in 2024, while Pakistan was the EU's 48th largest trading partner in goods, accounting for 0.2% of EU trade, according to official EU data. Bilateral trade in goods between the EU and Pakistan represented €12 billion in 2024 (with a deficit for the EU of €4.6 billion). During the meeting, Ambassador Kionka thanked PM Sharif for the support she had received during her stay in Pakistan. "The EU was committed to strengthening its cooperation with Pakistan," she was quoted as saying. PM Sharif conveyed his good wishes for EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and said that he looked forward to meeting her at a convenient opportunity in the coming days.
