China says Canada's order for Hikvision closure 'damages' trade ties

Time of India5 hours ago

Beijing: Beijing said Monday that Canada's request for Chinese surveillance equipment firm
Hikvision
to close local operations would "damage" bilateral trade, complicating recent efforts to improve ties between the countries.
Canada's industry minister,
Melanie Joly
, announced the move on Friday, writing on X that
Hikvision Canada
Inc. had been ordered to cease all operations due to concerns their continuation would be "injurious" to the country's security.
The statement did not provide details on the alleged threat posed by Hikvision products, which Canadian government departments will now be banned from purchasing or using.
Beijing's commerce ministry responded by accusing Ottawa of "over-generalising national security", stating: "China is strongly dissatisfied".
"This not only undermines the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies and affects the confidence of companies from both countries in cooperation, but also disrupts and damages the normal economic and trade cooperation between China and Canada," a statement read.
"China urges Canada to immediately correct its wrong practices," it added.
Hangzhou-based Hikvision is one of the world's leading manufacturers of security cameras and other surveillance products, but it has faced scrutiny abroad for its role in Beijing's alleged rights abuses against the Muslim minority population in the Xinjiang region.
The United States included Hikvision in a 2019 blacklist of Chinese entities it said were implicated in such violations.
The latest disagreement represents an early test for China-Canada relations after Prime Minister Mark Carney surged to electoral victory in April.
China said in response to the election result that Beijing was willing to improve ties with Ottawa -- a relationship rocked in recent years by a range of thorny issues.
The arrest of a senior Chinese telecom executive on a US warrant in Vancouver in December 2018 and Beijing's retaliatory detention of two Canadians on espionage charges plunged relations into a deep freeze.
Ties were further strained over allegations of Chinese interference in Canadian elections in 2019 and 2021, charges Beijing has denied.
Joly's statement Friday said that the decision to ban Hikvision had been reached following a "multi-step review" of information provided by the Canadian security and intelligence community.
Her statement added that the Canadian government "is further conducting a review of existing properties to ensure that legacy Hikvision products are not used going forward".

Registered intermediaries allowed to use 'e-KYC Setu System' of NPCI for Aadhaar based e-KYC authentication

ANI 30 Jun 2025, 21:52 GMT+10 Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 30 (ANI): Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) on Monday allowed registered intermediaries to use 'e-KYC Setu System' of National Payments Corporation of India to perform Aadhaar-based e-KYC authentication for ease of doing business, the markets regulator said in a statement. Under the present framework, registered intermediaries use e-KYC services of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) in the securities market. This service has been accepted as a valid process for digital Know Your Client (KYC) verification using KYC User Agency (KUA /Sub-KUA) mechanism and /or the Digilocker. To further facilitate ease of doing KYC, it is stated that registered intermediaries can also use the 'e-KYC Setu System' of National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to perform digital KYC. NPCI, along with UIDA,I has developed and implemented a system known as 'e-KYC Setu System' to enable digitisation of the customer onboarding. 'Registered intermediaries may use the facility of 'e-KYC Setu System' to perform digital KYC, as an additional alternate mechanism available to the them to carry out Aadhaar based e-KYC of their clients,' SEBI said in the statement. Border dispute with India complicated, takes time; ready to discuss delimitation, says China

China on Monday (June 30, 2025) said the boundary dispute with India was complicated and would take time to settle, but at the same time, it expressed its readiness to hold discussions on the delimitation of the border and keep it peaceful. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, in his meeting with Chinese counterpart Dong Jun in Qingdao on June 26, proposed that India and China should solve the "complex issues" under a structured road map comprising steps to de-escalate tensions along the frontiers and rejuvenate the existing mechanism to demarcate the borders. Mr. Singh and Mr. Dong held bilateral talks on the sidelines of a conclave of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in the Chinese port city of Qingdao, with a focus on maintaining peace and tranquillity along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). Asked for China's reaction to Mr. Singh's remarks, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said, 'What I can tell you is that China and India have established the Special Representatives (SRs) mechanism on the boundary question and reached the Agreement on the Political Parameters and Guiding Principles for the Settlement of the China-India Boundary Question". The two sides have diplomatic and military communication mechanisms at various levels, she said. 'China stands ready to maintain communication with India on issues, including delimitation negotiation and border management, jointly keep the border areas peaceful and tranquil, and promote cross-border exchange and cooperation,' she said. Questioned about the prolonged delay in resolving the border issue despite 23 rounds of the SR-level talks, Ms. Mao said, 'The boundary question is complicated, and it takes time to settle it'. 'The positive side is that the two countries have already established mechanisms at various levels for thorough communication. We hope that India will work with China in the same direction, continue to stay in communication on relevant issue and jointly keep the border areas peaceful and tranquil,' she said. First meeting of SRs The 23rd round of the meeting of the SRs, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, was held here in December last year. It was the first meeting of the SRs since frictions had emerged in the Western Sector of the India-China border areas in 2020. The SRs in their meeting positively affirmed the implementation of the latest disengagement agreement of October 2024, resulting in patrolling and grazing in relevant areas. In his meeting with Mr. Dong, Mr. Singh had emphasised the need to create "good neighbourly conditions" to achieve the best mutual benefits and called for "taking action on the ground" to bridge the "trust deficit" resulting from the 2020 eastern Ladakh border standoff, according to an Indian readout. Mr. Singh also briefed Mr. Dong on the Pahalgam terror attack targeting innocent civilians, and India's Operation Sindoor to dismantle the terrorist networks in Pakistan. The Singh-Dong meeting came amid efforts by both New Delhi and Beijing to reset their ties following an understanding last October to end the military stand-off along the LAC in eastern Ladakh.

Module launched on Saral Sanchar portal for carrying out demand survey to identify frequency bands for direct assignment of spectrum to CNPN

New Delhi [India], June 30 (ANI): The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has issued guidelines for the establishment of Captive Non-Public Networks (CNPNs). These guidelines allow enterprises to set up their own captive, private 4G/5G networks by either utilizing the spectrum assigned to the Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) or through the direct assignment of spectrum, thereby ensuring secure, high-reliability, and low-latency connectivity tailored to specific operational requirements, said the Ministry of Communications. Certain frequency bands were initially proposed for direct assignment of spectrum to CNPN licensees. However, it was observed that there was a lack of a device ecosystem in the frequency band identified for CNPN. During recent analysis, it was observed that the device ecosystem for CNPN is mostly available in IMT bands and 5G technology has also considerably advanced with different use cases. Also, system integrators are keenly interested in establishing CNPN-based networks. Accordingly, the DoT has now launched a module on the Saral Sanchar portal to assess a fresh demand for spectrum in various prospective frequency bands and carry out a demand survey to identify the prospective frequency bands for the direct assignment of spectrum for CNPN-based services. The portal may be accessed at: An Office Memorandum (OM) has been issued in this regard today and the same is available on the DoT website. The eligibility criteria for the direct assignment of spectrum shall be governed by the CNPN guidelines dated June 27, 2022. Enterprises having net worth of more than Rs 100 Crores, willing to set up CNPNs by obtaining spectrum directly from DoT and System Integrators interested in establishing CNPN networks for such Enterprises are invited to participate in this exercise The details can be submitted on the portal from July 1 to July 31, 2025.
