Qatar's envoy advocates cultural diplomacy in New Arab thought piece

As the international community concludes 47th Session of the World Heritage Committee in Paris, HE Dr Nasser bin Hamad Al Hanzab, Qatar's Permanent Representative to UNESCO, shares a powerful opinion article in The New Arab, calling for deeper global investment in cultural diplomacy as a pathway to lasting peace.
In the op-ed titled 'Qatar's Experience Shows World Peace Requires Cultural Diplomacy', Dr Al Hanzab reflects on the role of heritage in international cooperation, stressing that the preservation of cultural identity is not merely an act of remembrance but a blueprint for a more interconnected, resilient future.
He writes, 'Protecting heritage is as much about securing a shared future as it is about preserving the past,' framing culture as a critical tool for multilateral dialogue and global solidarity.
The article highlights Qatar's own contributions to cultural diplomacy, particularly through its Years of Culture initiative, which has brought meaningful engagement with countries such as France, Morocco, India and the United States through shared exhibitions, youth exchanges and entrepreneurial events.
Dr Al Hanzab also points to Qatar's domestic efforts, including the 20th anniversary of Qatar Museums and the 50th anniversary of the National Museum of Qatar, as examples of how culture serves as a civic and international platform.
Dr Al Hanzab concludes with a reminder rooted in UNESCO's founding vision: 'Peace must be founded upon the intellectual and moral solidarity of mankind.'

Speaking on the occasion, Ambassador of Morocco to Qatar HE Mohamed Setri said Morocco and Qatar pursue a wise foreign policy based on clear principles, foremost among which are mediation, dialogue, consensus, the pursuit of political solutions to conflicts, and the rejection of any infringement on the sovereignty and national unity of States. He emphasised the depth of bilateral ties between the two countries, underscoring how the relationship has evolved across numerous sectors through mutual respect and high-level consultation. As an example of this solidarity, he recalled the immediate support expressed by HM King Mohammed VI in a phone call to The Amir His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani following the missile attack on Al Udeid base, denouncing the assault and expressing unwavering support for Qatar's security. Setri further expressed Morocco's appreciation for Qatar's steadfast position in support of Moroccan sovereignty over its Southern Provinces and the Sahara issue. He also pointed to the 'Years of Culture' initiative as a symbol of this strong partnership. In 2024, Morocco was honoured as the cultural partner of the year, with a range of successful events held in Qatar, including the 'Splendours of the Atlas' exhibition, the Moroccan Caftan Show, and the Tbourida equestrian performance. The ambassador noted Morocco's rising profile on the international stage, citing its accomplishments in tourism, automotive manufacturing, aviation, maritime logistics, and infrastructure development. He highlighted that in 2024, the country attracted 17.4 million tourists and retained its leadership in the African automotive and aerospace sectors as major infrastructure projects such as the Tangier-Marrakesh high-speed rail and expansion of port and airport capacities further reflect Morocco's ambitious development trajectory. Ambassador Setri expressed gratitude to members of the Moroccan community in Qatar for their contributions to the success of the Cultural Year and their role in deepening the fraternal bond between the both brotherly countries.

Al Jazeera Media Network has strongly condemned the ongoing campaign of incitement against its staff, which has persisted since the start of its coverage of the Israeli war on Gaza. In a press statement, the Network said: 'This incitement represents a dangerous attempt to justify the targeting of our journalists on the ground. We hold the Israeli occupation authorities fully responsible for the safety of our personnel and urge influential states and international organisations to take immediate action to protect all journalists in Gaza, allowing them to perform their duties freely and without intimidation.' 'Israel's continued obstruction of international journalists from entering Gaza to report on the catastrophic situation has placed an even greater burden on Al Jazeera's journalists, who have shouldered the responsibility of conveying the truth as they witness it firsthand, despite enduring extreme hardships, including starvation, violence, terror, and a complete lack of life's most basic necessities,' the statement added.

Death toll in Thai-Cambodia clashes rises to 16 as 120,000 flee border area
The death toll from clashes between Thai and Cambodian troops has risen to 15 in Thailand and one in Cambodia, according to authorities, as more than 120,000 people living along both sides of the border separating the two countries flee the ongoing fighting. Deadly fighting continued for a second day on Friday as both countries traded heavy artillery and rocket fire, the bloodiest military confrontation between the two Southeast Asian neighbours in more than a decade. 'Thai forces have responded with appropriate supporting fire in accordance with the tactical situation,' the Thai military said in a statement. Thailand's Ministry of Public Health reported that at least 14 civilians and one soldier were killed in Thailand when fighting broke out on Thursday, and a local provincial official in Cambodia's Oddar Meanchey border province told the Reuters news agency that one person was killed and five wounded in Thai attacks. More than 30 Thai civilians and 15 soldiers were also injured, according to Thailand's Health Ministry, while some 100,672 people from four Thai provinces bordering Cambodia have been moved to shelters, Thailand's Ministry of Interior was quoted by AFP news agency as saying. Arsit Sampantharat, the Thai Interior Ministry's permanent secretary, was quoted by the country's Channel 3 television channel as saying that more than half of those evacuated were from Surin province, while the rest were from the provinces of Sisaket, Buriram and Ubon Ratchathani. Citing officials in Cambodia's Preah Vihear province, the Khmer Times news organisation said that about 20,000 residents have evacuated from the country's northern border with Thailand. Shelling from Thailand was also reported before dawn on Friday, the Khmer Times quoted the Cambodian military as saying. Cambodia's Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts claimed that Thailand's strikes had caused 'substantial damage' to the Preah Vihear temple, a UNESCO-listed World Heritage Site, according to The Phnom Penh Post. Diplomatic sources told the AFP news agency that the United Nations Security Council will hold an emergency meeting on Friday to discuss the border fighting. On Thursday, Thailand said it scrambled an F-16 fighter jet to bomb targets in Cambodia, while Cambodian forces launched long-range rockets towards civilian areas along the Thai border, Thailand's military said. Both countries have blamed each other for starting the clashes in a disputed area of the border, which quickly escalated from small arms fire to heavy shelling. The United States, a longtime treaty ally of Thailand, has called for an immediate end to the hostilities. China, a close ally of Cambodia, said it was deeply concerned about the ongoing conflict and hoped that both countries 'will properly solve their dispute through dialogue and consultation'.
