Sisters drowned in pools in Eryri National Park, inquest told
Hajra Zahid, 29, and Haleema Zahid, 25, were pulled from pools on the Watkin Path – which leads to the summit of Yr Wyddfa, or Snowdon – in North Wales on Wednesday June 11.
Inquests into the deaths of the women, who were both born in Pakistan but lived in Maltsby, Rotherham, South Yorkshire, were opened on Wednesday.
Assistant coroner for north-west Wales Sarah Riley said: 'Hajra and Haleema had travelled to the Nant Gwynant area with friends from university.
'They have entered the water and sadly both died as a result of drowning.'
The University of Chester students were identified by a friend, the inquest heard.
Ms Riley added: 'Investigations continue in terms of how they came by their death and the inquest is therefore adjourned to allow for completion of those investigations.
'I offer my sincere condolences to their family, friends and all who knew and loved them.'
The hearing, held at the Dafydd Orwig Chamber in Caernarfon, was told both women were pronounced dead shortly before 11pm on June 11.
Last week, a spokesman for North Wales Police said officers were called to Nant Gwynant, Gwynedd, at about 9.30pm after a report that one woman had been pulled from the water and another was said to be in the pools.
The second woman was pulled from the water but was pronounced dead at the scene.
A Llanberis mountain rescue team was sent to the area along with an air ambulance and a coastguard helicopter.
Vice-chancellor of the University of Chester, Professor Eunice Simmons said: 'The University of Chester community is in mourning for the tragic loss of Haleema Zahid and Hajra Zahid and our heartfelt sympathies are with their families and friends during this incredibly difficult time.
'Haleema and Hajra had joined Chester Business School earlier this year on the Master's in International Business course.
'They touched the lives of many here at Chester – their friends, the cohort on their course and the staff who taught them – and they will be deeply missed.'

3-year-old drowns at beach in Long Sault, Ont.
A three-year-old is dead after a drowning incident at Mille Roches Beach in Long Sault, Ont., Ontario Provincial Police said. Emergency services responded to a call about a child at the beach with no vital signs on Saturday at about 5:45 p.m., OPP said in a news release. Off-duty medical professionals were conducting resuscitation efforts and the Cornwall paramedic service took the child to hospital, where they were declared dead. Police are not releasing the child's identity and are investigating the drowning. On its website, the St. Lawrence Parks Commission said the beach is closed until further notice. OPP said the beach reopened at about 12 a.m. Long Sault is approximately 100 kilometres southeast of Ottawa.

Swimmer dies at Assateague Island after leaders call for increased lifeguard staffing
A swimmer died at Assateague Island National Seashore on Thursday, July 24, weeks after state leaders called on the Trump administration to restore lifeguard staffing. The 18-year-old man was near the southern end of the Chinconteague Beach lot around 4:15 p.m. when a relative ran down the beach to tell a lifeguard that two swimmers were struggling in the water, according to the National Park Service (NPS). One of the struggling swimmers was rescued, but the man was unconscious when he was pulled from the water. Officials immediately started CPR, and the 18-year-old was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, NPS said. The area where the man was swimming was nearly 150 yards from the lifeguarded zone of the beach, officials said. The 37-mile-long island is in Maryland and Virginia, though the Maryland district does not have lifeguards on duty, according to NPS. The incident comes shortly after Maryland Senators Chris Van Hollen and Angela Alsobrooks emphasized that the low lifeguard staffing at Assateague Island created a public safety risk. "Drownings happen in minutes, and there is no substitute for attentive lifeguards specifically assigned to monitoring water safety at Assateague," the senators said in a joint letter. "Furthermore, NPS's current limited safety measures burden neighboring beach safety and emergency response efforts, stretching services too thin and making the entire area less safe for residents and visitors alike." The senators urged the Trump administration to fill all vacant lifeguard positions at the park after federal budget cuts led to low staffing levels. The administration laid off nearly 1,000 NPS employees in February as part of a cost-cutting effort. A hiring freeze was also in place through July 15. "The reason there are no lifeguards at Assateague is honestly a symptom of the chaos and dysfunction that has been impacting this agency since the beginning of this administration," said Ed Stierli, the senior director of the Mid-Atlantic region National Parks Conservation Association. In a statement to CBS News, NPS called the lifeguard shortage a "nationwide concern." Assateague Island is known for strong rip currents.
