He helped write one of the seminal texts about software engineering. Here's what he thinks about AI agents.

AI agents are like "genies," said Kent Beck, one of the authors of the seminal "Agile Manifesto" — they'll often grant your wish, but not always in the way you'd like them to.
"They will not do what you mean. They have their own agenda," Beck said on a recent episode of The Pragmatic Engineer podcast. "And the best analogy I could find is a genie. It grants you wishes, and then you wish for something, and then you get it, but it's not what you actually wanted."
After 50 years in programming, including a stint at Facebook and a hand in the foundational text about agile software development, Beck said he's now having the most fun of his entire career — and it's partly thanks to AI agents, even despite their unpredictability.
"I'm trying all of the tools," he said. "Because right now, nobody knows what process is going to work best. Nobody knows anything. We should all be trying all the things that we can imagine, and then the truth will emerge out of all of that. So that's what I'm doing."
Beck was one of the 17 authors of the 2001 paper the " Agile Manifesto," which outlines four values and 12 principles for faster software development. The paper inspired the "agile method" of software development, which became commonplace in Silicon Valley because of its efficiency-boosting techniques.
Today, AI is already being used to replace human labor, particularly in programming, where it's hitting early-career engineers the hardest while simultaneously speeding up software development. Given the current state of coding, Beck believes that fundamental organizational skills are increasingly important rather than particular technical specializations.
"So, having a vision, being able to set milestones towards that vision, keeping track of a design to maintain the levels or control the levels of complexity as you go forward," Beck said. "Those are hugely leveraged skills now, compared to, 'I know where to put the ampersands, and the stars, and the brackets in Rust.'"
Though Beck does incorporate AI into his process, he doesn't necessarily trust it, he said. The technology isn't consistent enough to be relied upon.
"Sometimes it even seems like the agent kind of has it in for you," he said. "'If you're going to make me do all this work, I'm just going to delete all your tests and pretend I'm finished, ha, ha, ha.'"
Results are so inconsistent, he added, that using AI to code can sometimes feel like gambling.
"It feels like a rat and the pellet," he said. "It's like there's just a run button and I have to click it every time. And I click it and it is a dopamine rush because this is exactly like a slot machine. You've got intermittent reinforcement, you've got negative outcomes and positive outcomes."
Once in a while, though, the output will be just right — and Beck will be tempted to spin the wheel all over again.
"The distribution is fairly random, seemingly. So it's literally an addictive loop to have it. You say, 'Go do this thing.' And then sometimes it's just magic."

META, PINS, and SNAP Battle for Digital Turf in Epic Social Media Showdown

Having followed social media stocks for nearly a decade, I can say the current landscape is one of the most dynamic I've seen. In today's AI-driven environment, each company is navigating its own path. Meta Platforms (META), Pinterest (PINS), and Snap (SNAP) are competing in a rapidly evolving digital landscape, where success hinges on innovation, user engagement, and capturing a significant share of advertising spend. Here's a closer look at how each stock is positioned. Don't Miss TipRanks' Half-Year Sale Take advantage of TipRanks Premium at 50% off! Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) | The AI-Fueled Victor Meta is gaining impressive momentum across its platforms. Its most recent earnings report delivered a standout quarter, with revenue rising 16% year-over-year to $42.3 billion and net income jumping 35% to $16.64 billion. Daily active users across Meta's family of apps hit a record 3.43 billion, up 6%, fueled by AI-driven ad targeting and content recommendations that are keeping users deeply engaged on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Ad pricing remains strong as advertisers continue to see solid returns, helping sustain a steady flow of advertising dollars. More recently, Meta made a $14.8 billion investment for a 49% stake in Scale AI, valuing the startup at $29 billion, and hiring its CEO, Alexandr Wang, to lead a new AI lab. Moreover, recent reports that Meta is aggressively recruiting OpenAI employees with highly competitive compensation packages underscore just how serious Mark Zuckerberg and his team are about fast-tracking the company's AI ambitions. On top of that, the stock trades at a relatively modest 28x this year's consensus EPS —a figure I believe Wall Street is underestimating, especially in light of Meta's significant Q1 earnings beat. Based on current momentum, the true forward P/E may be closer to 22–23x earnings—a compelling valuation given the company's strong and consistent earnings growth. That's why Meta remains, by far, my largest holding. Is META a Buy, Hold, or Sell? Currently, most analysts are pretty bullish on META stock. The stock carries a Strong Buy consensus rating, based on 42 Buy, four Hold, and zero Sell ratings assigned over the past three months. META's average stock price target of $723.72 implies less than 1% upside over the next twelve months. Pinterest (NYSE:PINS) | A Scrappy Contender with Intangible Risk Pinterest takes a differentiated approach in the social media landscape, showing strength in specific areas while continuing to face challenges in others. In Q1, the platform reached a record 570 million monthly active users, reflecting a 10% year-over-year increase. Revenue increased 12% to $740 million, driven by AI-powered visual search and shoppable pins that enhance ad engagement. With $1.25 billion in cash on hand, Pinterest has the financial flexibility to continue innovating, particularly by improving its e-commerce capabilities to attract more advertisers. I remain broadly optimistic about its potential for ad spend growth and its disciplined cost management, which should support steady gains in both revenue and profitability over time. However, there are some caveats. Pinterest still trails peers in revenue per user, as larger platforms benefit from more substantial network effects and higher conversion rates. Additionally, economic uncertainty could lead advertisers to trim budgets, and smaller platforms like Pinterest are often the first to feel the impact. While Pinterest enjoys a loyal and engaged user base, monetizing its 570 million users without compromising its unique, creative identity remains a delicate balancing act. Is PINS Stock a Good Buy? Snap's (NYSE:SNAP) | Fighting a Losing Battle Snap is facing significant headwinds, and the numbers paint a challenging picture. In the most recent quarter, Snapchat reached 422 million daily active users; however, revenue grew only 5% to $1.19 billion, falling short of the pace set by competitors like Meta and Pinterest. Compounding the issue is Snap's elevated level of stock-based compensation, which accounts for roughly 19% of revenue and leads to ongoing shareholder dilution. Despite management's focus on positive free cash flow, that figure is essentially a byproduct of these high SBC levels, not improved operational efficiency. On a diluted basis, the company continues to erode shareholder value year after year. Supporters may point to Snap's efforts in augmented reality and interactive features as potential growth levers, but these initiatives have yet to have a material impact on the company's performance. Unlike Meta's leadership in AI or Pinterest's strategic shift in e-commerce, Snap's innovations haven't translated into meaningful revenue gains. In an increasingly competitive landscape, Snap is struggling to differentiate itself, and as a result, I remain unenthusiastic about its growth outlook. Is SNAP a Good Stock to Buy? Snap is currently covered by 31 Wall Street analysts, most of whom hold a neutral outlook. The stock carries a Hold consensus rating with six analysts assigning a Buy, 24 a Hold, and one Sell rating over the past three months. SNAP's average price target of $9.88 suggests about 6.5% upside potential over the next twelve months. Meta Leads, Pinterest Gambles, Snap Stumbles The social media landscape is a high-stakes battleground, and in my view, Meta stands out as the clear leader. With strong revenue growth, a dominant position in AI, and strategic investments like its stake in Scale AI, Meta remains a top pick for growth-oriented investors. Pinterest plays the role of the ambitious underdog. With 570 million users and a growing focus on e-commerce, it has potential—but it's a high-risk, high-reward proposition that requires flawless execution to succeed. Snap, on the other hand, appears to be losing momentum. Sluggish growth, intense competition, and ongoing shareholder dilution suggest management isn't prioritizing long-term value for investors. For now, Meta is the stock to own, Pinterest may appeal to those with a higher risk tolerance, and Snap looks best suited for short-term speculative trading rather than long-term conviction.

The CEO of a key SpaceX rival says customers are drawn to his company because it's 'even-keeled'

As Elon Musk and President Donald Trump continue to butt heads, the CEO of Rocket Lab said that public and private sector customers alike are drawn to his company's stability. "It's fair to say that folks, both government and commercial, come to us and they know that they have a very even-keeled public company that just builds rockets and satellites, and executes against that and nothing else," Peter Beck told Business Insider in June when asked whether the feud between the world's richest man and the president benefited his company. "That becomes valuable to people." Beck added that he hasn't seen any "obvious" data point about the impact of the ongoing disagreement about Trump's spending bill. And, as of mid-June, Beck told BI that Musk hadn't come up more frequently in conversations, either. Representatives for Musk and SpaceX did not respond to a request for comment from BI. Rocket Lab is headquartered in California, though Beck is based in New Zealand. It's an end-to-end space company, meaning it offers launch services, spacecrafts, satellite parts, and on-orbit management. Despite being much smaller than SpaceX — Rocket Lab has about 2,600 employees, Beck said, compared to around 13,000 at SpaceX, according to Forbes — it has emerged as a key rival. Musk himself once called Beck "impressive." Rocket Lab's partially reusable two-stage rocket vehicle, Electron, has completed 67 launches and deployed more than 230 satellites as of the end of June, according to the company. Beck told BI that Neutron, its reusable medium-lift rocket, is scheduled to launch later this year. SpaceX's Falcon 9 currently rules the medium-lift space, having completed almost 500 missions by the end of June. "Right now, there is essentially a pseudo-monopoly on medium lift. I don't think anybody went out intentionally to create that. But nevertheless, that's a status," Beck said. "So we have both government and commercial customers cheering us on very loudly to get Neutron to the pad, because there needs to be some launch site diversification." At the time of writing, Rocket Lab's stock was rising, and the company's market cap was more than $16.8 billion. While SpaceX is a private company, BI reported it was valued at $350 billion at the end of 2024. It's suffered some recent setbacks with its Starship rockets, a successor to the Falcon model — four consecutive launches have blown up, most recently in June. Musk downplayed the latest explosion as "just a scratch," and said the company learns from data collected during failed launches. Some of Musk's companies have suffered due to his public, sometimes ugly, on-again-off-again relationship with Trump, especially Tesla. Polling indicates that Musk's favorability is still underwater, even after he left his government role.

Report: Steelers sign GM Omar Khan to new three-year contract

The Steelers have just signed GM Omar Khan to a new three-year contract, keeping him in the Steel City of Pittsburgh until 2028. Steelers President Art Rooney II made the news official on Thursday: "I am excited to announce we have signed Omar to a new three-year contract," said Steelers President Art Rooney II, via "Omar and his team have done a great job over the past three years in constructing our roster through the NFL Draft, strategic trades, and free agency. We look forward to continuing that trend that will lead to even more success on the field." Since becoming the Steelers general manager shortly after the 2022 NFL Draft, Khan has done wonders for Pittsburgh's roster — earning himself the nickname with fans, the "Khan Artist." Whether he's aiding the future of the Steelers in the NFL Draft, signing high-profile free agents, or finessing a blockbuster trade, Khan has had tremendous success in his first three years as Steelers general manager. But it's not about the past moves he's made — for Khan, it's about the acquisitions still to come.
