Justin out to justify long and co$tly trip to US
PETALING JAYA: It will be a long and expensive trip to the United States and Canada for men's singles shuttler Justin Hoh but he plans to make it worthwhile.
Justin is set to compete in the back-to-back US Open in Iowa from June 24-29 and Canada Open in Markham from July 1-6 for the first time and wants to make the most of the opportunity in the World Tour Super 300 level tourneys.
"It will be my first time playing in US and Canada and the flight takes nearly one whole day. It will be my longest flight," said Justin after a training session at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara yesterday.
"Going to US is really very expensive too and I want to thank BAM (Badminton Association of Malaysia) for sending me. I hope I can get good results in these two tournaments."
World No. 42 Justin though knows he needs to raise his game in US as the competition has also attracted the likes of Taiwan's world No. 6 Chou Tien-chen and Japan's world No. 12 Kenta Nishimoto.
Justin will open his campaign against Belgium's world No. 61 Julien Carraggi and could go up against Nishimoto if he reaches the quarter-finals.
Despite the possible tough match-up against the Japanese, the 21-year-old hopes a solid four weeks of preparation will pay off.
"Nowadays, even Super 300 tournaments are not easy to play in as there will be top players there too. My preparation has been good though. I had four weeks of solid training," said Justin.
"B efore that, I had many tournaments and not much time to train. I have been trying to be in my best physical condition."
Justin is hoping for better fortunes after a difficult year so far.
His best performance came in the Taiwan Open last month where he made it to the last eight.
"There have been ups and downs. My performance has not been stable. I have so many things to learn," said Justin.
"When compared to the top players, I am still lacking speed, strength and experience. I hope the next six months will be better for me."

Mixed pairs Chen-Toh, Hoo-Cheng seek confidence boost ahead of Paris biggie
PETALING JAYA: Mixed doubles shuttlers Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei and Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin are seeking a much needed confidence boost in the Macau Open which starts tomorrow. The Super 300 Macau tourney will present Tang Jie-Ee Wei and Pang Ron-Su Yin with a last opportunity to win a title before the World Championships from Aug 25-31 in Paris. Both pairs have not captured a title this year and have struggled to produce their best form. World No. 4 Tang Jie-Ee Wei's best result so far this year were semi-final finishes in the Opens in Malaysia, India, Indonesia and Japan while world No. 13 Pang Ron-Su Yin have only made the last eight twice in the Indonesian Masters and Orleans Masters. The former have also faced off-court issues and split at the end of March after a strained relationship before resolving their differences and reuniting less than a month later. Meanwhile, Pang Ron-Su Yin are finding it tougher at the highest level after a breakthrough 2024 and have suffered eight early round exits this year. The pair will be hoping to turn around their form in Macau where they will be seeded third while Tang Jie-Ee Wei will start as the top seeds. Tang Jie-Ee Wei should have no problems getting past Leong Lok Chong-Ng Weng Chi in the first round while Pang Ron-Su Yin have a trickier opening task against Indonesia's Bobby Setiabudi-Melati Daeva. Pang Ron-Su Yin will also be under pressure to at least reproduce their showing last year where they made it into the semi-finals as anything less this time will see them lose ranking points. Red Giants battle Asia Warriors to stalemate
PETALING JAYA: Selangor drew 0-0 against the Asia Warriors, led by Japanese legend, Keisuke Honda, in a friendly match at MBPJ Stadium today. The match also served as the unveiling of Selangor's 2025-2026 M-League squad. Among the fresh faces in the Red Giants' lineup were Willian Lira, Moses Raj, Picha Autra, Chrigor Moraes and Zach Clough. In the ninth minute, Selangor captain Faisal Halim nearly created a goal with a pinpoint cross to Lira who forced a save from Asia Warriors' veteran goalkeeper Made Wirawan. The 44-year-old Wirawan suffered a knee injury in the 12th minute, and was replaced by Yoo Jaehoon. Selangor's best chance came in the 55th minute when Sharul Nazeem Zulpakar, who replaced Harith Haiqal Adam Afkar at halftime, spun and unleashed a low shot, only to be denied by Yoo. Asia Warriors suffered another blow late in the game when Daisuke Sato was stretchered off in the 78th minute.
