Alessia Russo's feelings as England Lionesses star's brother enters Love Island

Daily Mirror5 days ago

Alessia Russo is set to lead the line for England in the upcoming Women's European Championships but her brother - once a budding footballer himself - faces a different summer
As Arsenal and England star Alessia Russo prepares to lead her country's charge at the upcoming European Championships, her brother faces a rather different summer. While Alessia is in Switzerland with the Lionesses, Gio Russo will be on Love Island.
Gio (short for Giorgio) was once a budding footballer himself, playing for a number of non-league clubs, and has a big interest in sport himself. However, as the reality show star explained, his sister is also a Love Island fan.

"She's really excited, she watches every year and reckons I can do well so she's excited to see how I get on," Gio told ITV. With Gio looking for love, he has also outlined the need for any potential partner to be into sport.

"My sister plays pro football, so being interested in sport, they don't have to know football or understand it, but if they can show some sort of interest because it is such a prominent thing in our family," he said. "It would be hard if they hated it.
"Other green flags are having a nice family, I'm sick of being the 7th wheel in my own family!" added Gio ahead of his late addition to the show, which began on June 9.
The timing of the reality show meand Gio could miss a great deal of Alessia's involvement at the Euros. England begin their campaign against France on July 5, with The Netherlands and Wales rounding off the group.
England and France were also paired together in qualifying, with Alessia scoring for Sarina Wiegman's team during a victory in Saint-Etienne. The Arsenal star scored four times for the Lionesses as they won the Euros on home soil in 2022, and was England's top scorer in qualifying for the 2025 tournament with three.
Wiegman's team have a farewell friendly on Sunday, at home to Jamaica at the King Power Stadium. Alessia Russo scored in England's most recent game, a UEFA Nations League match away to Spain, though that ended in a narrow 2-1 defeat.

Gio, isn't the only islander with football connections. Dejon Noel-Williams, son of former Watford striker Gifton and a Grenada international footballer in his own right, is also part of the line-up.
"I've met all kinds of famous people through him," said Dejon, who works as a personal trainer and semi-pro footballer. "When I was younger it was weird because he was just my dad, but we'd go to a game and fans were asking for photos. I've met David Beckham, he was really nice."

Scotland ace reveals why 'raw' Euros exit must act as watershed moment under 'hungry ' new boss

Scotland's Jenna Clark believes the appointment of Melissa Andreatta can provide a springboard to finally return to a major tournament. Scotland defender Jenna Clark admits the 'raw' pain of missing out on the Women's European Championship this summer leaves her in two minds about whether she will be able to even watch the tournament this summer. The third successive tournament that Scotland have been forced to watch from home, their 2-0 defeat to Finland in the Euro 2025 playoffs saw Pedro Martinez Losa's reign as the national team boss come to a crashing end. The Spanish head coach dismissed less than a week after the painful defeat in Helsinki, his replacement Melissa Andreatta arrived in late April. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad While Martinez Losa will have other things on his mind this summer as he begins his stint in charge at the Liga MX Femenil side Tigres, for Liverpool centre-back Clark, the pain of missing out on this summer's tournament in Switzerland still rankles. 'As much as I was in and around the squad during the World Cup disappointment, I felt a lot more hurt by the Euros campaign,' Clark exclusively told The Scotsman. 'I'm don't know how I'm going to feel when it's on [Euro 2025]. We've [Liverpool] got a couple of players in the team who are going, and you're buzzing for them, but there's a part of me that's going 'it could have been us'. We've got good players, we are more than capable of qualifying for a major tournament. Liverpool and Scotland defender Jenna Clark is desperate to make a major tournament with the national team. | SNS Group 'Is it overdue? Or is it underperformance, or not the right balance - I'm not too sure. The Euros being on this summer makes it raw. I'd experienced the full campaign and everything that went into it. I was just really hurt after the game - it was a really emotional time. I never want to feel like that again. The next tournament is two years away, but the determination to get there is sitting in place already. That disappointment will be a massive motivation for the next campaign.' After an apathetic three-year stint under Martinez Losa, head coach Andreatta has been able to inject an early dose of positivity with a battling 1-1 draw against the Netherlands in the Nations League earlier this month. Arguably the better side in Tilburg, supporters were encouraged by what they witnessed from their side, with the 46-year-old making a strong first impression in her debut camp as the new Scotland head coach. 'Mel has talked about really bringing back that 'Scottishness' to our game, and showing our identity. For us our biggest focus needs to be competing against nations we are 'on par' with. Can we go and dominate those games? I want to experience the highs that I have had at club level with this [Scotland] squad, the staff, the players. Everything. I want that. I want it soon. That's the goal. I want to qualify for as many major tournaments as possible.

Love Island star ordered to change image for fame after villa

Love Island alumni Liberty Poole has always been her own woman - from keeping it real in the villa to embracing those fabulous curves as she admits she was asked to do one strange thing post-villa She might not have found lasting love during her two stints on Love Island, but Liberty Poole is proof that staying true to yourself is perhaps the real win when it comes to participating in the dating show. The 25-year-old Brummie first found fame in 2021 when she coupled up with Jake Cornish on day one in the villa and quickly became one half of the show's golden couple – until she called time on the romance, days before the final. Last year, Liberty gave love another shot on Love Island: All Stars but, once again, chose self-respect over game-playing guys. Since then, as she exclusively tells OK!, she's turned her relationship woes into a platform for body positivity, inspiring her 1.3 million Instagram followers to embrace their imperfections. ‌ READ MORE: Michelle Keegan joins Padel trend with powerful racket that is 'ideal for female players' ‌ Hi Liberty! Looking back, how do you feel about your experiences in the villa? You know, no matter what, I always come out a stronger person. But yes, I feel like my journeys in the villa weren't the easiest. It's a time I'll always cherish, but there were also some negative things to deal with. Obviously, I had to rewatch my boyfriend on TV saying he wasn't attracted to me, then in the Snog, Marry, Pie challenge, I got pied three times. I was the girl who was never picked or fancied. I think it's important to remember that there's such a small group of people in there, it's not a reflection on you – it's just the nature of the show. We're in the middle of the current series – any changes you would have liked to have seen this season? Well, I feel like they've come a long way since earlier seasons with diversity, but I do think they could still do more with body diversity as well. There's always a certain body type that goes into the villa, so I think more could be done in that sense. Because I'm a bit of a curvier girl myself, I do a lot of body positivity now online. Before I went on Love Island, I used to heavily edit my photos and shrink my waist. Whereas, when you're in front of a camera, you can't hide. Did you feel like people in the All Stars villa knew how to play the game and weren't taking part to find love? ‌ Yeah, I definitely think some people did. I remember having a conversation with one particular person in the All Stars villa and I was honestly just trying to have a genuine conversation with them. They said to me, 'Oh no, you're not doing this conversation right, you're mentioning the fourth wall.' They said that we needed to 'redo' the conversation. It wasn't even one of the producers who said that – it was a cast member. I realised people were actually thinking like that. I just went in as me because I don't think anything else would have worked for me. Do you think it's still possible to begin a long-lasting relationship in the villa or is it now more of a platform to find fame? I would say it's evolved more into that now, yes, because I think people are very aware that you go on the show and you get a certain following and it does open up opportunities and doors for you. I would say it's maybe more evolved into that now than the first season, but I wouldn't paint everyone with the same brush and say everyone's in it for the fame. I still think people do go into the villa open to finding love. ‌ Were there any challenges you experienced, returning to normality after you left Love Island for the first time? The welfare team really supports you during your time on the show and after the show, when you return home. For me, the difficulty was coming out. Never compromise your happiness for fame and money. You do get a bit love-bombed by the show. Obviously, you're busy when you come out and it's this crazy whirlwind, but it calms down. From the start, I'd say do not compare yourself to anyone else because everyone else's journey in the industry is different. When I came out, I had times where I was told to wear designer bags more to elevate my image. That just wasn't me – no thanks. What advice would you give any prospective Islanders? Just be yourself. I've been there and I've seen people be themselves and it works out for them a lot better than the people who try to pretend or play up to the camera in some way. Also, the public are not stupid. So just be yourself and you'll get further down the line. Some people's experiences are that you go in and find love and end up in a long-lasting relationship, like Alex and Olivia [Bowen], Indiyah [Polack] and Dami [Hope] – they're all still in very happy relationships. You can be open to that aspect, but I wouldn't go in with that expectation.
