Mohali: In a major political development, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday unseated Kharar municipal council president
Jaspreet Kaur Longia
of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) through a no-confidence motion.
The motion was backed by 18 AAP councillors and supported by local MLA Anmol Gagan Mann and Chamkaur Sahib MLA Dr Charanjit Singh.
The no-confidence motion was tabled and passed during a specially convened meeting of the council, attended by 21 out of 27 councillors. All 18 AAP members were present, along with three opposition councillors, including Longia herself. According to the Punjab Municipal Act, a passed no-confidence motion results in the immediate removal of the sitting president.
Executive officer (EO) of the municipal council, Gurbakshish Singh Sandhu, confirmed the outcome. "The motion was passed in today's meeting. We have forwarded the proceedings to the local bodies department and expect approval by May 19, after which a new house meeting will be called to elect the next president," he said.
Longia said, "I take this as god's orders. AAP has played political vendetta to grab the president's seat and I am ready to vacate it."
The Kharar municipal council elections held on February 17, 2021, initially produced a hung house, with Congress securing 10 seats, SAD 8, AAP 1, and independents 8. Jaspreet Kaur Longia was elected president with the support of SAD and independent councillors.
However, the political equation changed dramatically on Sept 23, 2022, when eight Congress councillors, six independents, and one SAD councillor switched allegiance to AAP, giving the party a clear majority with 18 seats.
The build-up to Friday's motion began on May 5, when all 18 AAP councillors submitted a written request to the EO for a special session to move the no-confidence motion. The letter cited a loss of faith in Longia's leadership and asserted she no longer enjoyed majority support. As per procedure, Longia was given an opportunity to prove her majority during the session.
MLAs Anmol Gagan Mann and Charanjit Singh accompanied the councillors to the meeting venue in a bus, signaling coordinated support from the party's legislative leadership.
Reacting to the development, SAD leader Ranjit Gill criticized AAP's approach, calling it "a display of political dictatorship." He said, "They are toppling elected representatives using government machinery. The people can see their high-handed tactics." Echoing the sentiment, senior SAD leader and former Derabassi MLA N K Sharma alleged that AAP was intimidating councillors loyal to SAD by using police pressure.

MLAs with councillors arrived under heavy security
AAP MLAs along with 18 MC councillors arrive in a single bus under heavy security at Kharar MC. The police had cordoned off the bus carrying the councillors to the MC house. Led by Kharar DSP Karan Singh Sandhu along with Kharar SHO Sub Inspector Ajitesh Kaushal and armed commandos, the police team escorted the bus to Kharar and then cordoned the passage allowing MLAs and councillors to walk towards the MC building.

Kerala told to start land acquisition with its 50% project cost: Vaishnaw on Sabarimala rail project

Land acquisition for the long-pending Angamali-Sabarimala Railway line, also called Sabari Rail project, is likely to begin soon as recent discussions between Kerala government and Railways Ministry indicate a renewed push to implement the project. In a written reply to questions from Congress's Jebi Mather Hisham in RS Friday, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that in a recent meeting with CM Pinarayi Vijayan, the state government has been requested to begin land acquisition by using its share of 50% of the project cost. Vaishnaw said that once land acquisition by the state starts, work can proceed further. The 111-km Angamali-Sabarimala railway line project via Erumeli was sanctioned in 1997-98. It is among the crucial railway projects in Kerala, which is expected to cater to the pilgrims visiting Sabrimala temple. Erumeli is the gateway to the famous hill temple. However, only the work on Angamali-Kaladi (7 km) line and long lead works on Kaladi-Perumbavoor (10 km) were taken up so far. Vaishnaw said that further works could not be taken up due to protests against land acquisition and fixing of alignment of the line, court cases against the project and inadequate support from the state government. The project's estimated cost has been revised to `3,801 crore by Kerala Rail Development Corporation Ltd (KRDCL) and submitted to Kerala government in December, 2023. In August 2024, the Kerala government gave its conditional consent to the estimate. Later, the Railways Ministry asked the state government to give unconditional consent for sharing the cost. The ministry also asked the Kerala government to enter into a tripartite MoU among the state government, Ministry of Railways and RBI for the project. 'However, in a memorandum submitted by Kerala government to the Railway Minister on June 3, 2025, it has been intimated that the Kerala government does not agree to enter into tripartite agreement,' Vaishnaw said. An MoU was inked between the state and the Railways Ministry in January 2016 but work could not be started due to ambiguity over financing and sharing of total cost. Ramchander Rao dares Revanth to appoint BC leader as CM

1 2 Hyderabad: Calling himself a 'BC' (Brahmin community) representative, Telangana BJP chief N Ramchander Rao on Friday challenged chief minister A Revanth Reddy to appoint either BC welfare minister Ponnam Prabhakar or TPCC president B Mahesh Kumar Goud—both from the Backward Classes—as the chief minister of Telangana. This sharp retort came in response to Revanth's recent suggestion that the NDA govt consider BC leader Bandaru Dattatreya for the post of Vice President. Speaking to the media, Ramchander Rao launched a scathing attack on the Congress, accusing it of failing to constitute a national BC commission when it was in power. He also questioned the party's sincerity toward BC welfare, especially regarding its silence on the caste census data. He urged the state govt to stop shifting the onus of BC reservations to the Centre and instead implement the 42% reservation in local body elections themselves. Commenting on the ongoing phone tapping controversy, he said the issue falls under TRAI's jurisdiction, and any central-level irregularities should be probed by the CBI. He demanded full disclosure on procurement and accountability in the case, alleging deliberate concealment by the authorities. On the Kaleshwaram project, he flagged a serious concern—₹150 crore was found with a single officer, but no political figure was held accountable. He also hit out at the Congress govt's handling of the HYDRAA initiative. "Instead of building homes, they've demolished shelters of the poor in the name of HYDRAA. The project is a complete failure," he declared, predicting the govt's eventual collapse. Delhi Confidential: Sweet offering

DMK's Arun Nehru, a first-time MP from Perambalur, has a sweet trick to make new friends in Parliament. The 41-year-old is popular among Opposition benches for his delicious homemade chocolates that he generously distributes among his colleagues. Nehru is also promoting a small venture — Kocoatrait, which makes ethically sourced zero waste bean-to-bar chocolates — from his constituency. He says it's one way of supporting a sustainable and circular economy. Nehru's sweet offering has won him praise from the Treasury benches too. While he has introduced some NDA MPs to his homemade delights, the DMK leader says he is still amassing courage to go to the senior leaders. He recently offered a few chocolates in different flavours to Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, who said he relished each one of them. Overhaul On Cards Ridden by factionalism, the Haryana unit of Congress may soon get new District Congress Committee (DCC) presidents under the party's Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan (organisational rejuvenation campaign). The party had kickstarted the organisational overhaul in Gujarat, where it appointed new DCCs in June. It recently sent observers to Haryana and Madhya Pradesh to oversee a similar exercise. Sources in the Congress say they are not sure when the Madhya Pradesh appointments will be finalised, but in Haryana the revamp will begin in the next few days. The party high command has meticulously gone through suggestions made by the observers, and will soon announce the appointments. In party circles in Haryana, meanwhile, speculation is rife about which faction — former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda or party MP Selja Kumari — will have more people among the new DCCs. Old Office, New Role Senior forest service officer Gobind Sagar Bhardwaj, who was till recently a member secretary of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), returned to his former institution — the Wildlife Institute of India — as its director. Bhardwaj had earlier served as a scientist and faculty at the autonomous wildlife research body and has moved there after a one-year stint at NTCA.
