
Cipla to enter into weight management segment in India, says MD Umang Vohra
The pharma major is also strengthening its presence in the central nervous system (CNS) therapeutic area, Vohra stated in the company's Annual Report for 2024-25.
"Our efforts are rooted in understanding patient needs, reducing stigma, and delivering differentiated therapies for niche indications...obesity is emerging as a priority area for Cipla. With a clear strategic intent, we are preparing to enter the weight management segment in India, aiming to address the rising demand for effective obesity solutions," Vohra said.
In the CNS segment, the Mumbai-based company has successfully in-licensed Sanofi India's CNS product range, including Frisium, a leading brand in the anti-epileptic category, he added.
He also said: "Building on this momentum, we aim to pursue similar in-licensing deals or acquisitions in niche indications of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and Parkinson's disease."
Several domestic pharma companies are developing drugs for weight loss to capitalise on the growing market for obesity and diabetes management.
American drugmaker Eli Lilly & Co has already launched its anti-obesity drug Mounjaro in India.
Denmark's Novo Nordisk has also launched its anti-obesity drug Wegovy, indicated for both long-term chronic weight management and reduction in risk of major adverse cardiovascular events.
For fiscal year 2025, Cipla reported consolidated revenue of ₹ 27,548 crore. Its consolidated net profit increased to ₹ 5,272 crore.
Umang Vohra further said the company is equally committed to addressing the global crisis of anti-microbial resistance (AMR).
"Our AMR portfolio is evolving from volume-based to innovation-led, with four novel products in development," he said.
"We will continue to invest in big brands, strategic alliances, digital infrastructure, and next-generation therapies, while remaining rooted in our founding values of care and compassion," he added.

Hyd startups Veera Dynamics, Binford Labs co-develop India's first stealth drones for armed forces
HYDERABAD: Veera Dynamics, a Hyderabad-based defence tech startup that has developed a next-gen stealth material called RAMA (Radar Absorption & Multispectral Adaptive), has now teamed up with Hyderabad-based Binford Research Labs to develop India's first stealth drone. RAMA, which uses nanotechnology and can be applied as a paint or wrapping, works like Harry Potter's 'cloak of invisibility' to enhance the invisibility of military platforms like drones, manned aircraft, or naval vessels across radar and infrared spectrums to avoid detection by the enemy. It is made from a blend of two different carbon materials that enables it to absorb radar waves, converting them into heat, which is then dissipated at a rate of 1.5 degrees centigrade per second. This rapid heat dissipation, combined with the material's ability to adapt to ambient temperatures, helps the RAMA coated platform achieve thermal equilibrium, effectively reducing its radar cross-section and thermal signatures. Sai Teja Peddineni, CEO, Veera Dynamics, told TOI that the material's development was initially spurred by a problem statement from the Naval Innovation and Indigenisation Organisation (NIIO) in 2022, which wanted an infrared stealth solution. While it achieved a 97% IR signature reduction with RAMA, the project quickly evolved to address radar spectrum invisibility as well with an over 90% reduction in radar signature, he said. 'RAMA represents our vision of platform-wide invisibility. It's not just a material – it's a strategic capability for future warfare,' Peddineni added. The dual stealth drones being co-developed by the two Hyderabad startups have already been tested by the Indian armed forces during field trials post Operation Sindoor , B Sidhanth Jain, founder, Binford Research Labs, said. He said Binford is now integrating RAMA with its autonomous drones that can operate in RF- and GPS-denied environments. "Our drones, equipped with RAMA, can carry out covert, high-risk missions in contested zones, enhancing their survivability and mission adaptability as it significantly compresses the adversary's detect-to-engage window to near-zero," Jain added. Both the startups are funded by Union defence ministry's flagship iDEX (Innovations for Defence Excellence) programme, that is managed by the Defence Innovation Organisation (DIO) and were also initially supported by IIT-Hyderabad. "India's Moonshot Moment": Shubhanshu Shukla's Mission Sparks Start-Up Surge In Space Sector
India's space ambitions received a major boost with the successful return of Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla from his historic mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS). As the first Indian astronaut in decades to venture into space, Mr Shukla's journey has sparked widespread excitement across the country, particularly among the nation's burgeoning space start-up ecosystem. One of the most enthusiastic reactions came from Yashas Karanam, co-founder of Bellatrix Aerospace, a Bengaluru-based space start-up incubated at the Indian Institute of Science. Speaking to NDTV, Mr Karanam described the mission as "the Rakesh Sharma moment of our generation," referring to India's first astronaut who flew to space in 1984. He emphasised that the alignment of ISRO and the Indian government toward human spaceflight is opening up new opportunities for private companies to collaborate on missions like Artemis and other international ventures. "This is much more exciting than many recent Indian missions," said Mr Karanam. "It opens up hope that the government and ISRO are aligned towards human spaceflight. That means private companies like ours are looking forward to newer projects, especially those inclined towards crewed missions and international collaborations." The Gaganyaan mission, which aims to send Indian astronauts into space aboard an indigenous spacecraft, has already received Rs 33,000 crore in funding commitment by the government. Mr Karanam believes this strong financial backing is a signal to investors that India is serious about space exploration. "The more you see space in the headlines, the more it strikes investor interest," he said. "It's all interlinked - government investment, mission success, and investor confidence." Bellatrix Aerospace is already contributing to this vision with its development of a green propulsion system using Hydroxylammonium Nitrate (HAN). This alternative fuel could significantly extend the duration of crewed missions in space. "With HAN as fuel, astronauts could stay in space for years instead of just six months," Mr Karanam explained. "This kind of innovation is exactly what investors are looking for, especially now that India has proven its commitment to human spaceflight." The ripple effect of Mr Shukla's mission is being felt across the start-up landscape. Mr Karanam noted that dozens of Indian space start-ups are working on technologies such as capsule return systems, reusable heat shields, and life-support innovations. "All of them are looking at this as a great opportunity," he said. "It's an inflection point - a moonshot moment for India." As Mr Karanam put it, "despite Rakesh Sharma going to space decades ago, there were questions about whether India would reinvest in this sector. This mission is the answer. We are finally here -with momentum, policy support, and private industry opening up in a big way." With the new space policy in place and start-ups like Bellatrix Aerospace leading the charge, India is poised to become a global leader in space technology. "Indian space companies are going to dominate the space tech ecosystem globally," Mr Karanam declared. "Excited? Very much-200 percent." The return of Shubhanshu Shukla marks not just the end of a successful mission, but the beginning of a new era for India's space industry, one driven by innovation, collaboration, and a bold vision for the future.
