MPs Propose Ban on 'Tuk-Tuks' on Bahrain's Public Roads Amid Safety Concerns

Daily Tribune22-05-2025
Three Bahraini MPs—Khalid Bu Onq, Ahmed Al-Salloom, and Hisham Al-Awadhi—have submitted a parliamentary proposal to prohibit the use of "tuk-tuks" on the Kingdom's public roads.
The move comes after a widely circulated video clip showed a woman driving a tuk-tuk in the Diyar Al Muharraq area. Similar sightings have reportedly occurred in other parts of the Kingdom, raising questions about the legality and safety of such vehicles.
Safety Risks Highlighted
In the explanatory memorandum attached to the proposal, the MPs underscored that tuk-tuks pose a direct threat to public safety. These vehicles typically lack essential safety features, such as seat belts, durable chassis structures, and adequate lighting or signaling systems. Furthermore, they are not designed to be part of modern traffic systems and are rarely subjected to regular maintenance or technical inspections.
Call for Traffic Crackdown
The MPs urged the General Directorate of Traffic to intensify field campaigns across Bahrain to locate and deal with unlicensed tuk-tuks. They called for strict enforcement measures, including issuing fines, impounding vehicles, and seizing them in cases of repeat violations or when public safety is at risk.
Preserving Road Order and Public Safety
The lawmakers emphasized that their proposal aims to uphold traffic system integrity and ensure the safety of both citizens and residents. They stressed the importance of adhering to the Kingdom's road and traffic regulations, especially as Bahrain continues to modernize its urban infrastructure.
The proposal is now expected to be reviewed and debated in the upcoming sessions of the Council of Representatives.

Bahrain and Lebanon: Over Five Decades of Deep Bonds and Mutual Respect

For more than 50 years, the Kingdom of Bahrain and the Republic of Lebanon have shared a strong and trusted relationship, one that goes beyond formal diplomacy and reflects a deep human, cultural, and economic connection. Despite the challenges and changes in the region over the decades, the bond between the two nations has remained resilient. The journey began in 1970, when Bahrain sent its first diplomatic mission to Lebanon, led by the late Shaikh Khalid bin Ali bin Mohammed bin Isa Al Khalifa. This marked the beginning of formal steps towards establishing official ties. By May 29, 1972, Bahrain and Lebanon officially announced the opening of embassies in both countries. Bahrain appointed its first ambassador, the late Ali Al-Mahroos — a key figure in the founding generation of Bahraini diplomacy. Interestingly, even before the official diplomatic exchange, Bahrain and Lebanon had already built strong cultural, educational, and healthcare ties. Since the 1960s, Bahrain welcomed many skilled Lebanese professionals who played a major role in developing local schools, media, medical centers, and cultural production companies. Their expertise helped shape the modern Bahraini landscape, blending Lebanese professionalism with Bahrain's vision for national development. Today, the Lebanese community continues to be an integral part of Bahraini society, enjoying appreciation from both the leadership and the public. They remain a key pillar in the cultural and human exchange between the two nations. Throughout the years, Bahrain has stood in solidarity with Lebanon during difficult times. One notable moment was Bahrain's strong condemnation of the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. His Majesty the King sent a message of condolences, calling the act a 'blatant assault on Lebanon's security and stability.' Bahrain later welcomed the ruling of the international tribunal and reaffirmed its support for international justice and Lebanon's sovereignty. This rich history reflects a relationship built not just on politics, but on shared values, mutual respect, and genuine friendship between the peoples of Bahrain and Lebanon.
