In Venice, Banksy mural 'The Migrant Child' removed for restoration
Art restorers have removed a deteriorating piece of graffiti by the street artist Banksy titled "The Migrant Child' from the side of a building overlooking a Venetian canal to preserve the work for future public display, officials said on Thursday. The removal from the wall of Palazzo San Pantalon was carried out in consultation with people close to the secretive British street artist, according to the Venice-based bank Banca Ifis' art programme that promotes art and culture. The Bansky work 'The Migrant Child' depicts a shipwrecked child holding a pink smoke bomb and wearing a lifejacket appeared along Rio di San Pantalon in Venice in May 2019. Photo: AP The artwork depicting a shipwrecked child holding a pink smoke bomb and wearing a lifejacket appeared along Rio di San Pantalon in Venice in May 2019, and was acknowledged by Banksy. Marked on online maps, it has become a tourist destination. But six years of neglect had led to the deterioration of about a third of the work, the bank said. The restoration is being overseen by Federico Borgogni, who previously removed dust and cleaned the surface before detaching a section of the palazzo's facade overnight Wednesday, Banca Ifis said in a statement. The bank is financing the project, but didn't release the cost of the operation. The bank intends to display the work to the public as part of free cultural events organized by Ifis art once restoration is completed. No time frame was given. - AP

Cleo Laine, British jazz singer who performed with Ray Charles and Frank Sinatra, dies at 97
LONDON, 2025 -British jazz singer Cleo Laine, who performed with musical greats including Frank Sinatra and starred as an actor in London's West End and on Broadway, has died aged 97, the Guardian newspaper reported on Friday, citing a statement from her children Jacqui and Alec. Born to an English mother and a Jamaican father in a suburb of London in 1927, she initially worked as a hair-dresser, a hat-trimmer and a librarian. She married in 1946 and had a son while still a teenager. Driven on by her dream of becoming a singer, she divorced and got her big break in 1951, when she joined the band of English saxophonist and clarinettist John Dankworth at 24. Dankworth's band decided her name was too long - at the time she thought she had been born Clementine Campbell, though a passport application later revealed her mother had used her own surname Hitching on the birth certificate. The men of the Dankworth Seven band thought her name was too cumbersome for a poster, and that her nickname Clem was too cowboy-like. They settled on a new stage persona for her by drawing "Cleo" and "Laine" from hats. In 1958, she and Dankworth married. Their home became a magnet for London's jazz set: friends included stars from across the Atlantic such as Oscar Peterson and Ella Fitzgerald, Lester Young and Dizzy Gillespie. After acting as well as singing in Britain through the 1960s, Laine toured Australia in 1972 and performed at New York's Lincoln Centre. The recording of a further show, at Carnegie Hall, won her a Grammy. Recordings included "Porgy and Bess" with Ray Charles. In 1992 she appeared with Frank Sinatra for a series of shows at the Royal Albert Hall in London, but she was best known for her work with Dankworth's bands. He later became her musical director. The couple built their own auditorium in the grounds of their home near London and were friends with the late Princess Margaret, the sister of the late Queen Elizabeth II. Their two children went on to become musicians. Dankworth - who Laine described as being "joined at the hip" with her - died in 2010. Hours after his death, Laine performed a scheduled show in their auditorium, announcing the news about her husband only at the end of the concert. (Editing by Andrew Heavens and Olivier Holmey)

HK actress Myolie Wu dispels rumours with family vacation in the Maldives
Myolie Wu shares a photo of her family of five on social media on July 23. Photo: Myolie Wu/Instagram Hong Kong actress Myolie Wu is vacationing with her family in the Maldives and, in the process, dispelling any lingering rumours that her marriage is on the rocks. 'Our annual date with the ocean, love this paradise!' the 45-year-old wrote on social media on July 23, sharing several photos of herself and her family at a lagoon resort. The actress, who recently starred in Chinese TV series A Better Life (2025), is married to British-born businessman Philip Lee, 52. They have three sons, aged four to seven. The five of them were all dressed in shades of blue in the photos, with Wu resting her hands on her husband's shoulder in one picture. She added on Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu: 'Although the weather isn't great, it's a sunny day as long as we are together!' Lee was in the news in March when he was spotted by a Hong Kong magazine hugging several women at a pub while celebrating his birthday. He took to Instagram to address the report, saying that he was a 'big hugger'. Wu did not react publicly to the incident for a while. Neither did she appear in the Instagram photos posted by Lee of their youngest son's birthday in April, raising speculation of marital woes. The actress broke her silence in May, telling the media that it was a misunderstanding. 'In fact, those who were present that night were close friends and relatives,' she said. 'The two ladies who were photographed hugging my husband are friends whom I have known for many years, and their husbands were also present.' Wu added: 'My husband hugged both men and women. It was normal social interaction with his friends.' Referring to her marriage, she said: 'There are absolutely no problems in our relationship.' – The Straits Times/Asia News Network View this post on Instagram A post shared by Myolie Wu (@myoliemyolie)
