Enzo Fernandez ‘will be even better' next season insists Enzo Maresca
The Argentina midfielder, signed from the Portuguese giants for a then British record £106.8million two years ago, took time to find his feet at Stamford Bridge.
But he excelled in the second half of the 2024-25 season, finishing the campaign with eight goals, and has continued to shine at the Club World Cup.
The 24-year-old scored in the opening win over Los Angeles FC and created two goals in as many minutes as the Blues beat Esperance Tunis 3-0 in their final group game on Tuesday.
Their reward is a last-16 clash with Benfica in Charlotte on Saturday.
Maresca told reporters at his pre-match press conference: 'I'm very pleased with Enzo, especially because, first of all, he's a nice boy. He's polite, he's a good boy.
'Then he's worked very well in all aspects inside the pitch, outside the pitch. Our struggle at the beginning was (for him) to understand the way we want to play.
'But he is doing fantastic in terms of numbers, goal assists. This is what we want from our attacking players.
'I've said many times that I prefer to have the attacking players score 10-12 goal each, rather than just a striker with 40 goals.
'So his contribution this season has been top and I am sure next season will be even better.'

Despite that, Fernandez could face competition for his place after Maresca suggested he sees Brazilian Andrey Santos more as an attacking player than a defensive one.
The highly-rated 21-year-old has rejoined the club this summer after a successful loan spell at Strasbourg and made his debut as a second-half substitute against Esperance.
Maresca said: 'His season has been very good but I think you need time to adapt.
'In terms of position, I see Andrey in this moment in more like Enzo's position than Romeo's (Lavia) position.
'The Premier League demands (players) to be physically strong. In this moment, I see Andrey more of an attacking player than defensive in the field.'
Maresca added that he hopes 19-year-old defender Josh Acheampong will stay with the club despite being linked with Newcastle and Borussia Dortmund.
He said: 'My idea or my plan with Josh is quite clear. I think he potentially can be a top defender for this club. I feel the best plan for Josh is to be with us.'

Maresca would also like England international Trevoh Chalobah to stay, but offered no guarantees.
He said: 'All the players that are here with us, I don't want to lose them but when the transfer window is open, unfortunately, anything can happen – not only for Trevoh, for (all) the 25 players of the squad.'
Maresca expects a tight contest against Benfica.
He said: 'It's going to be a balanced game, a tough game. In this kind of game the small details are very important.'

Brighton forward Joao Pedro is attracting interest from both Newcastle and Chelsea but Albion are ready to play hardball during transfer negotiations Brighton are seeking a £60million package to sanction Joao Pedro's exit. Brighton signed Pedro from Watford in a deal worth just shy of £30m in the summer of 2023 and they're determined to double their money. The Hornets also have an undisclosed sell-on clause which is poised to impact Brighton's thinking at the negotiating table. Pedro, who has scored 30 goals in 70 Albion appearances, was banished from Fabian Hurzeler's squad for the final two Premier League matches of the season following an alleged training ground spat with Dutch defender Jan Paul van Hecke. He is a target of long-standing interest to Newcastle as they were keen on a move in August 2022 when talks were advanced over a £30m swoop. Now Eddie Howe's side will have to cough up twice that figure as Pedro's value has sky-rocketed after two seasons on the South Coast. Newcastle have ramped up talks for three key targets as they also continue to pursue moves for Nottingham Forest's Anthony Elanga and Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford. An initial bid worth up to £45m including add-ons was knocked back by Forest for the former Manchester United winger but discussions are continuing between the parties. Manchester United are refusing to overpay for their biggest transfer targets this summer, which has reportedly led to a move for Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo breaking down Manchester United have reportedly given up in their pursuit of Antoine Semenyo - who was once dubbed a 'younger version' of Mohamed Salah - after refusing to meet Bournemouth 's asking price. Having already wrapped up the £62.5million signing of Matheus Cunha to kickstart their summer transfer activity, United are in the market for a more multi-functional forward. Fitting that description is Semenyo, though the move now appears to have crumbled. The Ghanaian winger's impressive 13 goals and seven assists this season sparked United's interest, with talkSPORT claiming the player held talks with the club over a potential Old Trafford move. But the same performances that caught United's attention have prompted Bournemouth to set the 25-year-old's transfer value at a whopping £70m. That figure is part of a wider trend seen this summer, where Premier League clubs are charging more for their players as the traditional big clubs shift their attention to signing players with experience in England's top flight. The i Paper reports that, in addition to United, Spurs showed the most interest in Semenyo, having stayed in contact with the Cherries after making an initial enquiry last week. But there's an increasing belief he will stay at Bournemouth, with the Red Devils, Spurs and Newcastle all unwilling to meet their hefty asking price after he recently agreed a new four-year deal with the club. United's reluctance to pay so much is a clear indication of their approach to the summer transfer window, where they are under financial constraints and will not splurge as recklessly as they have done in the past. For example, Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo has emerged as Ruben Amorim's top target over Semenyo, but the Red Devils only want him for a reasonable fee. Despite the Cameroonian's desire to join the Red Devils, United are yet to agree a deal with Brentford, who rejected a second bid of £55 million plus £7.5 million in bonuses for the 25-year-old. The Bees want at least the same fee United paid Wolves for Cunha up-front and it is still unclear whether the Red Devils will pay it. After missing out on European football next season, Amorim's transfer budget this summer is not as big as it might have been if he had won the Europa League final in May. However, United's latest financial results for the first three months of 2025 revealed a more encouraging picture despite Sir Jim Ratcliffe earlier this year suggesting the club was on course to run out of money by Christmas. It's understood that United will therefore look to complete the signing of Mbeumo to go alongside Cunha with their current finances. But they will need to sell the likes of Tyrell Malacia, Alejandro Garnacho, Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Antony before making any further additions beyond Mbeumo. If United bank the fees they are looking for for the aforementioned players, they will secure somewhere in the region of £170m. It is not expected that Amorim will sign a third forward, with those funds set to be invested in other areas of the pitch. That will mean missing out on Semenyo, who, former United striker Michael Owen, encouraged Liverpool to buy back in March as a replacement for Salah, whose future at the time was still unclear. Owen claimed the versatile winger could be a suitable heir to the Egyptian at Anfield, saying: 'I like Antoine Semenyo at Bournemouth, who plays in the same position as Salah. I like him, a younger version, but definitely got energy, scoring capabilities and a good player.' He added: 'That being said, you can't replace Mo Salah. I mean if you said Mo Salah and Darwin Nunez went and Alexander Isak and Antoine Semenyo came then I don't think it's the worst swap in the world if we're playing fantasy football here, but realistically Liverpool want to keep hold of their best players and Mo Salah is their best player so hopefully he doesn't leave." Semenyo now looks set to stay at Bournemouth unless the club drop their valuation or the player tries to force a move through.

Daizen Maeda 'interests' Brentford after Celtic star made transfer feelings very clear amid £21m non negotiable

It is claimed that the Premier League club could take "immediate action" and submit and offer - but the valuation of the Japanese international will be "carefully considered" before an offer is made. Reports in Turkey stating Jose Mourinho's men were told stump up £21million for the star by Celtic - and that valuation is unlikely to have moved since. But Maeda has already hinted this summer that he is in no rush to leave - as he sets his sights on the Champions League after reaching the play-off phase of the competition. He said: "I really enjoyed playing in the Champions League this season because there were so many games and it gave us a lot of different challenges. "I think the new format has been great and I am excited to try it again this upcoming season. It helped me improve. "We played some great teams. Personally, I actually thought the best side we played was Atalanta because they didn't appear to have any weaknesses." And last week Maeda explained during an interview in his homeland that his family was settled in Glasgow. He said: "My son was doing knee sliding exercises at home. I was inspired by that and thought I could do it too. "I thought I'd give it a go and it was surprisingly easy, so I started doing it after that. It's easy to do in Scotland because the grass is always wet."
