Wake Forest wins 3rd straight elimination game at regional to force deciding game against host Vols

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Wake Forest won its third straight elimination game at the Knoxville Regional, this time on a bases-loaded walk by Jack Winnay for a 7-6 victory over No. 14 national seed Tennessee on Sunday night.
Wake Forest (39-21) forced a deciding game on Monday against Tennessee, which is looking for its fifth consecutive super regional appearance. The Vols (45-17) had their 14-game win streak in regionals come to an end.
Haiden Leffew (4-1) struck out the side in the top of the ninth inning to give Wake Forest a chance for a walk-off in the bottom half.
Matt Scannell led off the ninth with a walk and he scored when Winnay drew a four-pitch walk against Nate Snead.
Marek Houston homered in the first and singled up the middle in the ninth for Wake Forest. Javar Williams added a two-run shot in the fourth — the 14th of the regional for the Demon Deacons — for a 6-2 lead.
Andrew Fischer and Levi Clark each had a two-run homer for Tennessee to tie it at 6-6.
Tennessee reliever Brandon Arvidson allowed five earned runs in 5 1/3 innings, while striking out 12. Snead (4-2) fielded a bunt in the ninth but Kade Lewis reached safely to load the bases for Winnay.
Houston also homered in the first game of the day for Wake Forest.

Create Account He is head and shoulders above most of his England teammates and, it is fair to say, that without his presence and that of former captain Joe Root, this would be a fairly ordinary national squad. In the current series against India, the red-head has displayed his class with bat and ball, and without him, England would possibly have been down 2-1 instead of being in front with one Test to go. Stokes has put his body on the line in the four encounters and he isn't kidding when he says he is all sore and hurting as the squads go into battle in the finale at The Oval starting on Thursday. Stokes fought tooth and nail to hand India a loss in the fourth Test at Old Trafford in Manchester that would have wrapped up the series 3-1, but little did he and the rest of his squad realize this India squad led by newcomer innings and Shubman Gill isn't prepared to roll over and surrender. No one in their right mind would believe the visitors would survive an England onslaught and pull off one of the greatest escapes in Test folklore. It matched the drama of the fourth Test at Lord's, where England nosed out India by 22 runs. At Old Trafford, India lost its first two wickets without a run on the board and 311 runs behind England's imposing first-innings total of 669. Few expected an Indian team minus recently retired greats Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin to fight back with such vigour, but it appears that the country has embraced new skipper Gill who has led with his bat. Gill, of course, hit his fourth century in as many matches to launch the platform for his country's recovery and defy England. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. He received solid support from the ever-dependable KL Rahul (90) and the two starred in a partnership of 188. Skipper Gill, who has been a thorn in England's side, stroked a superb 103 in his near seven-hour, stamina-sapping stay at the wicket before losing his prized wicket to Jofra Archer. That took his overall total in this series to 722 runs, well ahead of Rahul who has 511. India coach Gautham Gambhir was full of praise for his skipper. 'An important thing is that he's living up to his expectation, his own talent, and more importantly is (that) he is the captain and has a burden of pressure,' Gambhir said. His departure raised England's hopes, but there was more pain to follow for the home team while millions of fans back in India had their fingers crossed that all-rounders Ajay Jadeja and Sundar Washington would pull it out of the fire. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Jadeja, for long considered one of the greatest all-rounders in the game, lived up to his reputation while the up-and-coming Washington soaked up the pressure and combined to frustrate an England attack that ran out of ideas. Jadeja (107 not out) and Washington (101 not out) fashioned a brilliant stand of 203 for the fifth wicket, much to the chagrin of Stokes and England. Stokes has spent the past couple of days resting in bed, but has made it clear no pain will stop him from taking the field at The Oval on Thursday. Apart from the hurt and pain, Stokes and England has been roundly criticized for its petulant behaviour against Jadeja and Washington on the final day at Old Trafford. When Stokes realized there was no way England could win with 15 overs left, he extended his hand to the batsmen signalling for a draw. But Jadeja and Sundar were unbeaten on 89 and 80, respectively, and looking to get to their hundreds. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. That's when Stokes and other England players started spewing verbal barbs at the two. Former England captain Nasser Hussain was surprised at the attitude of Stokes and his team since the two 'Indians were playing for their hundreds.' Read More Former India batsman Sanjay Manjrekar accused Stokes of behaving 'like a spoiled kid,' claiming that England was 'making a mockery of the game' by bowling part-timers to end the match quickly. 'OK fine, he's unhappy that the players haven't walked off, he'll have to manage his overs carefully with main bowlers already exhausted from bowling long spells whole day,' Manjrekar said. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. 'It was Ben, the hero, the champion that I admire, but on this occasion behaving like a spoiled kid.' Meanwhile, Gambhir was all fired up at the practise session on Tuesday when he had a run-in with curator Lee Fortis. Video footage shows Gambhir pointing his finger at Fortis and yelling: 'You can't tell us what to do' and 'you're just the grounds man, nothing beyond.'' With India looking to tie the series, it is expected to field fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah and also give spinner Kuldeep Yadav a chance. Meanwhile, England has added fast-bowling all-rounder Jamie Overton to the squad. Should be an exciting and spicy end to a great series. Check out our sports section for the latest news and analysis. Cornerback Caelen Carson joins Cowboys' growing injury list with hyperextended knee

OXNARD, Calif. (AP) — The injuries are mounting at training camp for the Dallas Cowboys, with cornerback Caelen Carson the latest expected to miss multiple weeks after injuring a knee. The team reported on its website Tuesday that Carson hyperextended a knee in practice Monday and could miss four to six weeks. There's a similar time frame for left tackle Tyler Guyton, who went down with a knee fracture in the same practice in California. Offensive lineman Rob Jones broke a bone in his neck in the first padded practice of camp over the weekend and is expected to be out two to three months. Carson and Guyton are second-year players with strong chances to start. Carson would be filling in for Trevon Diggs, who isn't expected to be ready for the Sept. 4 opener at Philadelphia in what has been a long recovery from knee surgery. Last year, Carson surged into a starting role as a rookie fifth-round draft pick when DaRon Bland was diagnosed with a stress fracture in his foot late in the preseason and ended up missing the first 10 games. Carson also was limited by injuries, including a season-ending shoulder issue, and played in just six games all season after starting the first three. Diggs and Josh Butler, who tore an ACL late last season, are on the physically unable to perform list. Dallas added depth at cornerback for camp by signing Christian Matthew, a seventh-round pick by Arizona three years ago. Manchester City completes the signing of goalkeeper James Trafford from Burnley

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Manchester City completed the signing of James Trafford from Burnley on Tuesday with the goalkeeper returning to the club where he began his career as an academy player. Trafford signed a five-year contract and was handed the No. 1 jersey. 'Rejoining City is such a special and proud moment both for me and my family. I always dreamed that one day I would be able to come back to Manchester City,' Trafford said. 'This is the place I call home.' City reportedly activated a 27 million pound ($36 million) buy-back clause. Trafford's return comes after leaving City for Burnley in 2023 where he helped the club secure promotion to the Premier League last season. He kept a record 29 clean sheets in the second-tier Championship last term. 'James is already one of the most accomplished young goalkeepers in the English game, and we are delighted to welcome him back to Manchester City,' said City director of football Hugo Viana. 'He has all the attributes a top-class goalkeeper requires.' The 22-year-old Trafford is City's sixth signing of the offseason since its four-year run as English champion was ended by Liverpool. City manager Pep Guardiola had reshaped his team with the signings of Rayan Ait-Nouri, Tijjani Reijnders, Marcus Bettinelli, Rayan Cherki and Sverre Nypan. ___ James Robson is at ___ AP soccer:
