What Your Nightmares May Be Trying to Tell You About Your Health
New research suggests that there's a link between having regular nightmares and dying early.
People who had weekly nightmares were three times as likely to die early as those who had them less often.
Doctors say there are a few possible reasons for this.
Nearly everyone has a nightmare here and there, but up to 6% of people struggle with frequent nightmares. Not only are those terrifying to experience, but new research suggests having regular nightmares could raise the risk of dying early.
The study, which was presented at the European Academy of Neurology Congress 2025, analyzed data from nearly 2,500 children between the ages of 8 and 10, and 183,012 adults between the ages of 26 and 86. The researchers discovered that adults who said that they had weekly nightmares were more than three times more likely to die prematurely (which they defined as before the age of 70) compared to people who said they never or rarely had nightmares.
The researchers discovered that having weekly nightmares was more strongly linked with premature death than other well-known risk factors like smoking, having obesity, following a poor diet, and being physically inactive.

If you have regular nightmares, it's understandable to be concerned. Here's what sleep specialists and a psychologist want you to keep in mind.
There are a few reasons why someone may have nightmares. 'It can stem from stress and anxiety, along with depression,' says Thea Gallagher, Psy.D., clinical associate professor at NYU Langone Health and cohost of the Mind in View podcast. 'Sometimes people get nightmares if they have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or post-traumatic stress symptoms.'
But there are other things that can be behind nightmares, says W. Christopher Winter, M.D., a neurologist and sleep medicine physician with Charlottesville Neurology and Sleep Medicine and host of the Sleep Unplugged podcast. 'While psychological factors probably play a role, there is emerging evidence that it can also relate to neurotransmitter imbalances—think, depression—or increased activity in the amygdala, a part of our brain responsible for emotional processing,' he says.
Nightmares may even be caused by a 'simple sleep disruption of any source,' including sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, and noisy bedmates, Dr. Winter says. Substance use, eating late, and even certain medications may raise your risk of having nightmares, too, Gallagher says.
The researchers didn't find one definitive reason why nightmares might raise the risk of early death, but there are some theories. One is that having regular nightmares leads to faster biological aging—that accounted for about 40% of the higher-than-usual mortality risk, according to the researchers. The reason for this is likely elevated levels of the stress hormone cortisol, which are usually released in the body when someone has a nightmare, the researchers explained. That speeds up the aging process of cells, raising the risk of early death.
Lack of sleep that can come with nightmares or be the cause of nightmares may also raise the risk of early death, especially if someone is experiencing this often, Dr. Winter says. 'The link between sleep apnea alone and increased dreaming and nightmares is more than enough by itself to explain the findings in this study,' he says. Dr. Winter points out that nightmares may be a 'marker of sleep quality or health quality' in general. Meaning, the nightmares may not cause poor sleep, poor sleep may cause the nightmares.
Gallagher agrees. 'Nightmares may be indicative of underlying mental health and/or medical issues, which we know can put you at risk for premature aging and death,' she says.
Having nightmares may even make people want to sleep less, and lack of sleep raises the risk of early death, Dr. Winter points out. 'There is evidence to support the idea that frequent nightmares often put a significant amount of psychological stress on people—they avoid sleep and engage in other behaviors that put health at risk,' he says.
Because nightmares have so many different potential causes, Dr. Winter says it can be helpful to work with a healthcare provider to try to pinpoint what's behind them.
Some medications, like zolpidem (Ambien) and varenicline (Chantix) are linked to having vivid dreams and nightmares. If you're on one of these and nightmares are a concern, Gallagher says it can be helpful to talk to your prescribing doctor to see if there is another option to consider.
Cognitive therapy may also help, especially if the nightmares seem to be related to trauma. 'We want to process the trauma,' Gallagher says. 'It will find a way to scare you in your sleep if you haven't processed it in the daytime.' That usually involves trying to make meaning of these thoughts and memories to try to make them feel less scary by facing them with the help of a mental health professional, Gallagher says.
Beyond that, Gallagher suggests doing your best to practice good sleep hygiene, including keeping a consistent sleep and wake schedule, limiting the use of stimulants and alcohol before bed, and having a calming bedtime routine.
Again, it's completely normal to have a nightmare here and there. But if these are a regular thing for you and it's disrupting your quality of life, it's time to talk to a healthcare provider about the next steps.

Gemma Collins weight-loss drug advert banned
An Instagram post by TV personality Gemma Collins which advertised a weight-loss drug and app has been banned. The star posted: "I'm starting this year two sizes down, thanks to Yazen's weight loss app and medication". It is illegal to advertise prescription-only weight loss drugs and Ms Collins' was one of nine adverts banned in a crackdown by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA). Ms Collins told the ASA's investigation she accepted her posts had promoted the Yazen weight-loss service and app and she would follow guidance in future. Yazen is a Swedish digital healthcare brand that offers users a doctor-supervised weight-loss programme combining prescription medications with lifestyle coaching. Ms Collins posted a video advert for the brand to her Instagram on 6 January this year. In the now-banned advert, Ms Collins describes how Yazen has helped her and stated: "I'm not telling anyone to go on this medication, but it is prescribed on the NHS." Although the advert didn't name a specific weight-loss medication, the ASA said it made references that breached its code. The ASA said it sought advice from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, which expressed concern that consumers were likely to be led to request a prescription weight-loss medication. Therefore, the advert was deemed as promoting those medications to the public, breaching ASA rules. The eight other adverts banned for promoting prescription only weight-loss medications to the public were: A paid-for Meta ad for CheqUp Health, which stated "Take the first step to sustainable weight loss with CheqUp". A paid-for Meta ad for which included an image of a partially visible injection pen and code breaching text A paid-for Google search ad for Juniper UK, which stated "GLP-1 Weekly Weight Loss Injection" and featured an image of an injection pen. A paid-for Google search ad for Phlo Clinic, including text that stated, "Get 35% off Weight Loss Order Weight Loss Treatments Online". A paid-for Google ad for SemaPen, which stated "SemaPen Makes Weight Loss Easier." A paid-for Meta ad for Cloud Pharmacy featuring texts messages between two friends discussing new weight-loss medications you can order online. A paid-for Google search ad for which featured text stating "Obesity Treatment Jab" and an image of a box containing a vial of liquid. Women are twice as likely to suffer from Alzheimer's as men. Scientists have figured out why
Experts have long known that women are at a greater risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. They're twice as likely to be affected as men. Now scientists say they may be on their way to understanding why that's the case - pinpointing two stark differences between men and women. Firstly, women have different chromosomes than men. They also undergo menopause: a process that occurs when a woman's reproductive hormones naturally decline starting in her 40s and 50s. One in three older Americans dies with Alzheimer's, or another dementia, according to the Alzheimer's Association. Almost two-thirds of Americans with Alzheimer's disease are women. 'Epidemiologically, we see that for almost all neurological diseases, there are differences in how many biological women and men are affected,' Anna Bonkhoff, resident and research fellow in neurology at Harvard Medical School and Mass General Brigham, explained in a recent interview. 'There's a tendency, for example, in [multiple sclerosis] and migraine for more females to be affected, while it's the contrary for brain tumors and Parkinson's.' 'Just based on these numbers, you get the feeling that something needs to underlie these differences in terms of the biology,' she added. Looking inside the body, while women have two 'X' chromosomes, men have an 'X' and a 'Y.' Chromosomes are thread-like structures of DNA inside our cells that carry hundreds or even thousands of genes. Genes determine a person's physical characteristics. Differences between genes held on the X and Y chromosomes may give women an increased chance of developing Alzheimer's disease. Recent research has shown that genes on the X chromosome are related to Alzheimer's disease, including that women with Alzheimer's live longer than men with the disease due to their second X chromosome. 'A lot of genes for the immune system and regulating brain structure are located on the X chromosome, so the dosages differ to certain degrees between men and women. That seems to have an effect,' said Bonkhoff. Women's different dominant hormones — such as estrogen, which acts on the brain — could also play a role. 'Menopause is part of the puzzle, probably one of the bigger ones,' Bonkhoff said. 'I'm not saying it's the only one — aging is relevant by itself, and there's a lot of interesting research looking at what aging does to the immune system that seems to have implications for cognitive changes.' During menopause, when ovaries stop producing estrogen and progesterone, some women turn to hormone replacement therapy. The practice offers relief for symptoms of lower hormone levels in menopause such as hot flashes. But for some women it may increase their risk of dangerous medical conditions, including heart attacks, strokes, breast cancer, blood clots and gall bladder disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Women who received hormone replacement after age 70 also have significantly higher levels of the protein known as 'tau,' according to Rachel Buckley, associate professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School. The accumulation of tau is a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease. They also suffered higher cognitive decline. Buckley published those findings last March in the journal Science Advances. But further research is needed to understand these associations. 'We work with a lot of secondary data that already exists, and that's great but there are limitations to what we can do with it,' Buckley said. 'We're trying to see if we can set up a new study design where we can really look at the time of menopause, what is changing in the blood, what is changing in the brain, what is changing in cognition, and how that might be associated with later life risk.'

Watchdog bans host of ads for prescription-only weight-loss medications
A watchdog has cracked down on a host of weight-loss jab providers for advertising the prescription-only medications to the public. The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) said the nine rulings against the ads – one featuring reality TV personality Gemma Collins – made it 'crystal clear' that all injectable forms of weight-loss medication were prescription-only and therefore could not advertised to the public. In December, the ASA warned businesses and individuals who were targeting members of the public with ads for the medicines. It said no-one operating in the industry could say they had not been warned that weight-loss prescription-only medicines 'must not be promoted to the public'. The ads banned this week include an Instagram post by Collins, posted on January 6, which promoted the weight-loss service Yazen. In a video, Collins stated: 'I'm starting this year two sizes down, thanks to Yazen's weight loss app and medication. It's really quick and easy to get started with Yazen, it has absolutely changed my life… I finally found something that actually I lose weight on.' She continued: 'Yes, there's, you know, reports and stuff. And I'm not telling anyone to go on this medication, but it is prescribed on the NHS.' Two complainants challenged whether the ad breached rules because it promoted prescription-only medication to the public. Yazen said the post had been intended to share information about their 'holistic, responsible approach to weight loss', and had not been intended to focus solely on medication. Following notification of the complaint, and in agreement with Collins, the post has been amended to remove any reference to prescription-only medications. Yazen said they would ensure that future posts were compliant with the advertising code. Collins said she took her responsibilities under the advertising code seriously and strove to comply with them. She accepted that her posts had promoted the Yazen weight-loss service and app, and said Yazen would approve any marketing materials she might post in future, and she would follow any guidance that the ASA provided. The ASA also banned an ad for prescription-only weight-loss medication posted by CheqUp, which read: 'No GP or pharmacy visit, just a 2 minute online consultation.' CheqUp told the ASA that they believed the ad had been created in line with what had become widespread industry practice in the weight-loss sector. They assured the ASA that the ad would not appear again. Other providers who have had their ads banned include Juniper UK, Cloud Pharmacy, and Phlo Clinic and SemaPen. The ASA said the rulings established the advertising of named weight-loss drugs such as Wegovy, Mounjaro, Ozempic and Saxenda was banned, as was the use of various claims such as 'obesity treatment jab' and 'weight loss pen'. In April, the ASA said a search in January found around 1,800 unique paid-for weight-loss ads which were identified as potentially advertising a prescription-only medicine. It has published a joint Enforcement Notice with the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency and General Pharmaceutical Council, making clear that ads for named weight-loss prescription-only medications are prohibited, including online, on social media and by influencers.
