Deals: Pixel 9 family gets price cuts, Samsung tablets discounted

GSM Arena11-05-2025
The Pixel 9 family is currently 14% off at Amazon Canada (the non-foldable members). We also have a look at what's going on with Samsung tablets.
The Google Pixel 9 is the baseline model – it's more capable than the 9a, not as pricey as the 9 Pro. Check out our Pixel 9 vs. 9 Pro article for a detailed comparison, you can also watch the video above.
In short, the Google Pixel 9 Pro's key advantage is the 48MP 5x (113mm) periscope camera. The 42MP ultra-wide selfie camera is a nice perk too. Both phones use the Tensor G4, but the Pro has more RAM (16GB vs. 12GB), which should help. The Pro also has extra connectivity features like UWB (for tracking tags) and Satellite SOS (for emergencies outside of cell coverage). Google Pixel 9 Pro $200 off

The Pixel 9 and 9 Pro are equal in one respect – size. If you want a bigger screen, the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL offers a 6.8' panel. The battery life is about the same on both phones, but the Pro XL has a slight advantage in charging. More details in our Pixel 9 Pro vs. 9 Pro XL article and in the video above.
One non-Pixel phone on offer this week is the Samsung Galaxy A36. Even without a metal frame, we found its build quality to be great. The screen is bright and the stereo speakers are loud, but certain features like HDR are missing. Still, the Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 offers adequate performance and sustains it well after prolonged use and battery life is pretty decent. Samsung Galaxy A36 $80 off

Next up, Samsung tablets. Going in ascending order means that we start with the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite (2024), the third iteration. It has a big 40% discount on the 128GB model (the 64GB model is the same price due to a smaller discount). The Exynos 1280 is okay and there is a microSD slot, but the 4GB of RAM is quite limiting. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 is from mid-2023 but still has a couple of OS updates left (it just got One UI 7). It has a more powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset and 8GB of RAM, which helps performance (there's a microSD slot too). The screen is an 11' 120Hz OLED panel and you get full DeX support (the Tab S6 Lite has DeX, but it's limited to the tablet's own screen).
The Samsung Galaxy Tab S10+ and Tab S10 Ultra are the current models (there is no vanilla model in this generation). They have 12.4' and 14.6' displays, respectively, with 10,090mAh and 11,200mAh batteries. Both are powered by the Dimensity 9300+ chipset. Note that the Tab S9 launched with Android 13 and is only promised 4 OS updates, while the Tab S10 series came with Android 14 and is getting 7 OS updates.

Dig deeper in Google Search with AI Overview and three buttons

Just because a query you ask Google Search to respond to in Android or iOS includes an AI Overview response, that doesn't mean that your journey to get an answer to your question has ended. Google now highlights part of an AI Overview response in blue. Tap on the highlighted words and three buttons appear at the bottom of the display. Whatever is covered in blue will be the topic of the AI-generated info brought up by the buttons. So you can select which part of the AI Overview you want to be highlighted before diving in deeper. The three new buttons include: Explain this -pressing this button will generate an AI-driven explanation covering the activity discussed in the highlighted blue portion of the AI Overview. For example, in an example, Google Search is asked, "What is Android?"AI Overview appears and there is a blue highlighted "snippet" that says, "Android is a mobile operating system developed by Google primarily for mobile devices." For most people, this answer would not be sufficient. Seeing Google offering this comes as no surprise since other AI features are being added to Google's own apps. Google even plans on offering AI-sourced summaries for articles posted in your Discover feed. This feature could show you more information on the topic of an article in your feed, sourced from multiple publishers. Pressing on the multiple logos will create a "More" sheet showing all of those articles. AI-generated summaries are being tested for your Discover feed. | Image credit-9to5Google Google wants to save you time by showing you previews on your Discover feed to help you decide whether you want to open the story in the browser before you do so. On the other hand, if the user gathers enough info from the summary, he won't feel the need to tap on the story. Google is testing the AI Overview buttons and the AI summary for the Discover feed. Weekly poll results: Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7 are great but pricey, Z Flip7 FE is a miss

Last week's poll pinpointed price as the primary concern when people consider the new Galaxy Z foldables. They may have gotten slimmer, they may have gotten lighter, but they did not become cheaper. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 proved to be quite popular, though the people who are interested are split into two camps – those who can justify its price tag and those who can't. And the latter is a slightly bigger group. Some are not happy with the hardware – the complaints mainly focused on the battery capacity and to an extent the charging speed – but that was a relatively small group. Then there are those who think there are better foldables available – that topic is strongly region-dependent, though, as some markets have much less variety than others. This applies to the Flips as well. The upgraded Samsung Galaxy Z Flip7 was also quite popular. Among those interested, we see a similar nearly even split on the topic of price – however, this time opinions weighed in favor of 'the price is right'. There was a big discussion in the comments over whether horizontal or flip foldables are better – but we'll leave that as a topic for a future poll. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip7 FE was supposed to be the answer to those looking for a cheaper flip. And while it is cheaper than the Z Flip7, price doesn't exist in a vacuum – a lot of people don't think that the FE hardware is worth it. And with that, the majority believe they can get better value for money with other flip foldables. We are working on detailed reviews for the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7. In the meantime, you can check out our hands-on review with both models. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 Samsung Galaxy Z Flip7 Samsung Galaxy Z Flip7 FE 5G
