Paul Azinger is selected to receive the PGA Tour's Payne Stewart Award
The award began in 2000, a year after Stewart and three others died in a plane crash. It has become one of the top awards in golf, with a ceremony televised live from Atlanta during the Tour Championship in August.
'To be named the recipient of this award, representing my dearest friend, is one of the proudest moments in my life,' Azinger said.
Azinger is a 12-time winner on the PGA Tour, including the 1993 PGA Championship that he won in a playoff. He is equally known for reshaping the Ryder Cup qualification system and leading the Americans to a rare victory against Europe in 2008. He now works as a television analyst for the PGA Tour Champions.
The award honors a player who shows character, sportsmanship and commitment to charity. Azinger and his wife, Toni, in 2021 opened the Azinger Family Compassion Center, which serves vulnerable and struggling families in Manatee County in Florida.
The Southern Company, which sponsors the award, donates $300,000 toward the recipient's charity and $200,000 to Stewart Family Foundation programs.
Stewart, a three-time major champion and the
reigning U.S. Open champion when he died in 1999
, and Azinger were close friends on tour. Azinger was the main speaker at Stewart's memorial service, rolling up his pants to look like plus fours and wearing a tam o'shanter cap.
'Payne displayed the ultimate character, sportsmanship and service to others throughout his career. He set the standard for how to represent the game of golf, so to be recognized for this award is truly humbling,' Azinger said.
The ceremony will be Aug. 19. Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Byron Nelson received the inaugural award.

received it last year. Other winners over the years have included Tom Watson and Nick Price, Steve Stricker and Tom Lehman.
'If there is one person who knows all the positive traits that exemplified Payne Stewart, it's his close friend, Paul,' PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said. 'His values align with the character and charitable pursuits that Payne displayed throughout his career, and it's only fitting that Paul be honored with this year's award.'

"There's more interest in players from here now but if a club only offers say £5,000 or something for them you think, yeah, hang on a minute. "If the kid after 18 months isn't at a level, they're thinking, 'We've only spent five grand', and they're going to release him very quickly. "Whereas if they have invested in the player by means of the transfer fee and invested in him and his family then they are going to work closer with them. "So yeah it's a big decision and young players have to choose wisely to make sure it's the best move for them and their career. "What we can't do, and what we never have done or would never do as a football club is if a big club or somebody wants a 16-year-old, we won't stand in their way. "But I think personally, again, there's no harm in going the Gareth McAuley route. He ended up playing until he was 37, 38. It took him a little bit longer to break into eventually. "Gareth had an outstanding career. He scored one of the most iconic goals that Northern Ireland have ever seen on the European stage. So if anybody knows about playing in the Irish League and being patient and having a few knock backs it's Gareth. "Some of the younger players here they want to go to a Premier League club. Then all of a sudden, maybe it doesn't work out and they're maybe scarred a little bit. Their confidence maybe takes a couple of knocks. And then they have to go and find somewhere else. "So as Gareth says about Matty Orr playing 40 or 50 games here, just like Trai, and there was also the likes of Paul Smith, Gavin White, Stuartie Dallas and Big G himself, who treaded a similar path, if you've played so many games at a young age then you're ready to go and I think they're better prepared for it."

But despite its constant progression, it never fails to give fans exactly what they hope for from a golf playoff. With Scottie Scheffler at the top of the FedEx Cup standings through the regular season, perhaps we are in store for our first ever back-to-back champion. That said, you can never discount Rory McIlroy, who finished second in Cup standings and has hoisted the FedEx Cup on three separate occasions (2022, 2019, 2016).
