A 4th man accused in a fatal dogpile outside a Milwaukee hotel pleads guilty to felony murder
Former Hyatt Hotel security guard Todd Erickson entered the plea in connection with D'Vontaye Mitchell's death in Milwaukee County Circuit Court on Thursday morning, online court records indicate.
Erickson was set to go on trial on Aug. 11. He faces up to 15 years in prison when he's sentenced Sept. 3. His attorney, Kerri Cleghorn, didn't immediately return a voicemail left at her office.
Erickson's plea moves a massive criminal case reminiscent of George Floyd's death a step closer to resolution.
According to investigators, Mitchell ran into the Hyatt's lobby in June 2024 and went into the women's bathroom. Two women later told detectives that Mitchell tried to lock them in the bathroom.
Security guard Brandon Turner pulled Mitchell out of the bathroom and together with a guest dragged him out of the lobby onto a hotel driveway. Turner, Erickson, bellhop Herbert Williamson and front desk worker Devin Johnson-Carson continued to struggle with Mitchell before taking him to the ground and piling on top of him, according to a criminal complaint.
Hotel surveillance video shows Johnson-Carson holding Mitchell's legs while Erickson, Turner and Williamson held down his upper body. They kept him pinned for eight to nine minutes. By the time emergency responders arrived, Mitchell had stopped breathing.
A medical examiner later determined that Mitchell was morbidly obese, suffered from heart disease, and had cocaine and methamphetamine in his system. The medical examiner concluded that he had suffocated and ruled his death a homicide.
Attorneys for Mitchell's family have likened his death to the murder of Floyd, a Black man who died in 2020 after a white Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck for about nine minutes. Floyd's death sparked a national reckoning on racial relations.
Mitchell was Black. Court records identify Erickson as white and Turner, Williamson and Johnson-Carson as Black.
The four workers told investigators that Mitchell was strong and tried to bite Erickson, but they didn't mean to hurt him. Ambridge Hospitality, the company that manages the Hyatt, fired all four of them in July 2024.
Turner, Williamson and Johnson-Carson were all charged with being a party to felony murder along with Erickson. Turner pleaded guilty to that count this past March. Williamson and Johnson-Carson both pleaded guilty to a reduced count of misdemeanor battery that same month. All three are set to be sentenced Sept. 3, the same day as Erickson.

Soulja Boy has been arrested and charged with possession of a firearm during a traffic stop. The rapper, whose real name is DeAndre Cortez Way, was a passenger in the car that was stopped in the Fairfax area of Los Angeles early on Sunday morning, the LAPD said. "A passenger was detained and police arrested DeAndre Cortez Way for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm," the statement added. Possessing a firearm as a convicted felon is a felony. The 35-year-old was booked into jail in the LAPD's Wilshire Division shortly after 6am. It is not clear if he has since been released. Police did not provide information on what prompted the traffic stop and who else was in the vehicle with Way. Soulja Boy is yet to publicly comment on the incident. FBI warns of a particular scam involving QR codes
Scammers are increasingly exploiting QR codes to trick people into revealing financial information or installing malicious software on their devices. The FBI has recently issued a warning about a particular type of scam involving QR codes on packages delivered to people who didn't order them. Recommended Videos The scammers are clearly playing on our curious nature, with the appearance of an innocent-looking QR code likely to tempt at least some people to scan it to find out more about the mystery package they've just received. But this could take you on a journey where you end up being tricked into handing over personal details such as financial information, or downloading malware that could pull data from your phone. 'While this scam is not as widespread as other fraud schemes, the public should be aware of this criminal activity,' the FBI said. The agency said the activity is a variation of the so-called 'brushing scam' where online sellers send you unordered items so that it can use your name to post fake reviews to boost the product's rating. 'In a traditional brushing scam, online vendors send merchandise to an unsolicited recipient and then use the recipient's information to post a positive review of the product,' the FBI explained, adding that in this latest variation, 'scam actors have incorporated the use of QR codes on packages to facilitate financial fraud activities.' The FBI is imploring people to beware of delivered packages that they didn't order, and to avoid scanning QR codes from unknown origins. The agency's warning comes at a time when QR codes are being increasingly used in scams besides those involving unsolicited packages. QR codes are being used increasingly by criminals, mainly because of their growing presence in everyday life. It means scammers are even sticking fake codes over legitimate ones, so you need to be on your guard when you hold your phone over one, especially when you're out and about. The New York Department of Transportation, for example, recently alerted drivers to a scam where criminals were sticking QR codes on parking meters. The code directed anyone who scanned it to a third-party webpage asking for credit card information. These days, most phone cameras automatically recognize QR codes and, unless you've turned off the setting, show you the web address that you'll land on if you tap it to proceed. So even with codes that you think you can trust, take a moment to read that address before going ahead. As for QR codes stuck on packages that you didn't order, just ignore them entirely.

Gov. Greg Abbott threatens Texas House Democrats with removal from office for fleeing state
Gov. Greg Abbott informed Texas House Democrats late Sunday that he would attempt to have them removed from office if they do not return to Austin to pass the GOP's proposed new congressional maps. The Republican governor's late-night missive came after more than 50 Democrats left the state Sunday afternoon so the Texas House would not have a quorum — the number of lawmakers needed to consider and pass legislation under chamber rules — aiming to grind all legislative activity to a halt for the remainder of the special session, slated to end later this month They are hoping to stop the passage of a new congressional map, drawn at the direction of President Donald Trump, that could net five additional seats for Republicans in the 2026 midterms. 'This truancy ends now,' Abbott said in a letter sent to each of the departed members. 'The derelict Democrat House members must return to Texas and be in attendance when the House reconvenes at 3:00 PM on Monday, August 4, 2025.' If they are not back by then, Abbott said, he would initiate legal action to remove them from office. He cited a nonbinding 2021 legal opinion from Attorney General Ken Paxton, who said it would be up to a court to decide whether a lawmaker who had left the state to deny quorum had forfeited their office. If a court were to decide that the legislators had vacated their offices, Abbott would be permitted to fill those seats with appointees of his choosing, Paxton's opinion stated.
