
German car makers brace for further Trump administration tariffs
US President Donald Trump is expected to announce further tariffs on imports this week, in addition to the 25% tariffs on imported cars and car parts he has already ordered. But while governments and exporters the world over have been preparing for his next move, predicting what it will be or what impact it will have has proven difficult.
Trump has also repeatedly flip-flopped between announcing tariffs and then pausing them. Markets are in a volatile mood — and all the while, the threat of a trade war has raised fears that another US or even global recession could be on the horizon.
The German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) has pointed out that US factories rely on supplier networks, especially in Canada and Mexico, meaning that these tariffs will have global consequences. VDA spokesperson Simon Schütz told Euronews that price increases are inevitable — and for US customers in particular.
"In the long run, if the situation escalates, it will cost growth, prosperity, and potentially jobs on both sides of the Atlantic. That's why finding a solution now is crucial," he said.
German car manufacturers are very active in the US market, employing over 140,000 people at US facilities and producing more than 900,000 cars there each year. Half of them are exported.
"It also needs to be emphasised that even US manufacturers themselves are against these tariffs," Schütz says. "So the US industry in general, if you look at stock market developments, views the current course of the US president very critically."
He adds that tariffs are not the only challenges the car industry in Germany is facing.
"There are also geopolitical shifts that continue to affect us. This makes it all the more important for the incoming German government, which is currently in coalition negotiations, and the EU Commission to do their homework."
Schütz is urging both Germany and the EU to prioritise reducing bureaucracy and focusing on making themselves more competitive and attractive as business locations.
He points out too that energy prices are three to five times higher in Europe than in the US and China, a major problem for international business.

"I think it is important that Europe forms alliances and cooperates with partners who face similar challenges as we do, and that we advocate for global and free trade. History has shown that free trade creates winners and prosperity for all involved. That should now be our primary focus," Schütz insists.
Audi told Euronews in a written statement that the Volkswagen Group to which it belongs is "counting on constructive talks to be held between trading partners in order to ensure economic stability and to avoid a trade conflict".
The car manufacturer underlined the importance of the transatlantic relationship with the US and says it recently invested more than $14 billion (€12.95) in the market.

InSpecs upbeat on H2 despite tariffs threat clouding H1 sales, earnings
The threat of US tariffs loomed large over Inspecs Group's half-year results to end-June released Thursday (31 July) with sales and core earnings falling as a result. The eyewear designer, manufacturer and distributor makes and markets its own brands and has licenses for Barbour, Joseph, Radley, Superdry, Temperley, Viktor&Rolf and others. Its said group sales to the end of May were impacted by the uncertainty surrounding the prospects of US tariffs being implemented. This continued throughout June and as a result, group revenue for H1 dipped 2.9% to £100 million compared to H1 2024. On a constant currency basis, half-year revenue of £101.7 million was down 1.3%. The board said it expects to report underlying core earnings (EBITDA) for H1 of around £8.2 million, down from £10.1 million on a year-ago like-for-like basis. But it also said: 'We have a strong order book for H2 2025 and, once trade negotiations are settled, we expect our businesses affected by the tariffs to return to growth in the second half of the year. 'We have also secured the listing of key brands into the European and US markets. The operational efficiency and cost-saving plans, including the consolidation of our US, German and Swedish operations, are expected to yield additional savings in H2. As a result, we now expect full year revenue and underlying EBITDA to be in line with 2024 on a like-for-like basis".. In other news, InSpecs said it has completed a strategic review of its lens manufacturing subsidiary Norville (20/20), and the group's now in discussions with a number of strategically aligned buyers about a sale of the business as a going concern. Meanwhile, its monthly losses have been materially reduced in Q2. The company will release interim results on 18 September.

The EU holds its breath as 1 August US tariff deadline looms
A few days after the political agreement struck between the EU and the US, the European Commission is still awaiting executive orders from Washington setting in concrete the deal agreed by handshake by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and President Donald Trump — which would spare Europeans from higher tariffs. 'It is the clear understanding of the EU that the US will implement the agreed across-the-board tariff ceiling of 15%. It is also our clear understanding that the US will implement the exemptions to the 15% ceiling as outlined by President von der Leyen last Sunday,' Commission spokesperson Olof Gill said on Thursday. 'The US has made these commitments. Now it's up to the US to implement them. The ball is in their court,' he added. The Commission expects the White House to issue executive orders before 1 August replacing the current tariffs — 25% on EU cars and 10% on all EU imports — with the 15% rate agreed on 27 July. This would provide relief to a strategic sector like the automotive industry and avoid the 20% so-called 'reciprocal' tariffs Trump had threatened to apply at the beginning of April. However, the US tariffs of 50% on steel and aluminium are expected to remain in place, as this strategic sector is still under negotiation, with the EU hoping to obtain a quota system with lower tariffs. 'I don't expect this new quota system to be in place by tomorrow,' Gill said, 'we're working on it and our intention is to have something ready and workable as soon as possible.' Joint statement Among the exemptions, the EU has secured 0% rate for aircraft. Von der Leyen on Sunday also announced that zero-for-zero tariffs will apply to certain chemicals, generic drugs, semiconductor-making equipment, some agricultural products, some natural resources and critical raw materials. It remains to be seen whether all the products will be covered by the executive orders. The Commission said however on Thursday that wine and spirits will not be among the exemptions, negotiation on this strategic sector being still ongoing. A joint statement is also being negotiated. However, differing interpretations of the deal struck on Sunday between the EU and the US could delay its publication. Views diverge sharply across the Atlantic on what the US calls 'non-tariff barriers' to its exports, namely EU digital regulation and phytosanitary rules. While the US is pushing for these to be eased, the EU continues to firmly assert its sovereignty over its legislative powers. The wording of the EU's commitments to purchase US energy, weapons as well as its investment commitments is also expected to be the subject of tough negotiations.
