Johor's digital economy gets boost with 42 approved data centre projects in Q2 2025, says state exco
In a Facebook post, he stated that data centres serve as a key driver for the implementation of the Johor-Singapore Economic Zone, the Johor Digital Plan, and the state's border economic transformation agenda.
He made the statement following the Johor Data Centre Development Taskforce meeting, which was co-chaired by Johor Public Works, Transport, Infrastructure and Communication Committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh, and Johor Investment, Trade, Consumer Affairs and Human Resources Committee chairman Lee Ting Han.
Mohd Jafni said the meeting also reviewed seven new applications for data centre development in the Greater Johor Bahru area.
He said the task force represents a holistic approach by the state government, coordinated by Johor Town and Country Planning Department (PLANMalaysia) and involving key technical agencies in the state.
Mohd Jafni said the state government prioritises the development of data centres in planned industrial zones such as Ibrahim Technopolis (IBTEC) in Kulai, the Sedenak industrial area, and the Pasir Gudang industrial zone, as these locations offer strategic advantages, including direct access to major highways, high-capacity power grids, stable water supply, and proximity to ports and international airports.
He added that a total of 7,618 acres of planned industrial land has been allocated for data centre development, including areas under the Pasir Gudang City Council, such as ASM Green, Rising Gateway, Iskandar Halal Hub, Kosmo, and Keck Seng, as well as IBTEC under the Kulai Municipal Council.
'IBTEC, developed by Johor Land Group, alone has allocated 600 acres specifically for data centre development,' he said, adding that the state government will also limit new approvals for data centre construction in areas under the Johor Bahru City Council and Iskandar Puteri City Council to avoid land use conflicts with residential areas.
'The approval process for data centres in Johor is highly transparent and based on genuine technical requirements. Each application must comply with noise and heat control measures, architectural design standards, energy capacity requirements, as well as disaster and environmental risk management considerations.
He noted that Johor is the first state to adopt Tier 4 data centre technology, the highest classification for data centre reliability and redundancy, which includes air-cooling systems and wastewater recycling technology, developed in collaboration with Indah Water Konsortium and Johor Special Water. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 4 — The acquisition of Boeing aircraft by Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) is part of a long-term, phased plan to renew and expand the fleet's capacity, said Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. The minister emphasised that MAG's purchase of Boeing aircraft was not a decision made abruptly or due to tariff pressures. He said the decision was based on the need to replace the Boeing 737-800 planes, which have been in operation for an average of 14 years, to ensure the company's operational safety and sustainability. 'In 2016, MAG placed an initial order for 25 Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft. Since November 2023, 13 planes have been received, with the remainder to be delivered progressively until 2027. 'On March 20, 2025, MAG finalised an additional order for 30 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, with deliveries expected to take place from 2025 to 2035,' he told the Dewan Rakyat today during the ministerial briefing on reciprocal trade negotiations with the United States. Tengku Zafrul also mentioned that there are 30 more aircraft currently in the planning category, with decisions to be made based on MAG's future growth strategies and plans. 'The value of this acquisition covers not only the aircraft price but also includes engine costs, training, maintenance, and long-term support,' he added. Tengku Zafrul pointed out that Malaysia's aerospace industry would benefit from this decision, with Boeing having long been a key partner in the sector, including through Boeing Composites Malaysia (BCM) in Kedah, which supports Boeing's global supply chain and provides employment opportunities for local communities. 'Malaysian companies such as CTRM, UPECA, SME Aerospace, Plexus, and others are important suppliers of Boeing and Airbus components. Malaysia's aerospace industry contributed RM25.1 billion in 2024 and supports 30,000 jobs nationwide. 'At the same time, the country's tourism sector is showing a strong recovery, surpassing pre-pandemic levels. Boeing itself projects global passenger traffic growth of 4.7 per cent annually over the next 20 years,' he said. Supermax co-founder to oppose husband Stanley Thai's media blackout bid
Tan Bee Geok is suing Stanley Thai over statements he made three years ago which she claims were calculated to shame her as a mother, relative and business leader. PETALING JAYA : The estranged wife of Supermax founder Stanley Thai is opposing his application to bar the media and public from their high-stakes defamation suit. Tan Bee Geok, co-founder of the glovemaking giant, will contend at the hearing that Thai has no grounds to oppose a public hearing since he claims his impugned statements are true. Tan also claims that Thai's statements were circulated beyond their household. For that reason, she says, it would be fundamentally unjust to shut the courtroom doors in a lawsuit brought to seek redress for harm allegedly suffered in the public domain. Tan will argue that an open trial is a fundamental principle of Malaysia's legal system and that any discomfort felt is normal to all litigants. She is also expected to take issue with the late filing of Thai's application, saying it disrupted the trial which had been scheduled to start last month. On Wednesday, Tan filed an affidavit setting out her reasons for opposing the application. Thai has until Aug 6 to file his reply. Judicial Commissioner Eddie Yeo will hear the application on Sept 19. Tan is suing Thai over a series of text messages and verbal remarks allegedly made to family and friends three years ago—statements, she claims, were calculated to shame her as a mother, relative and business leader. With the trial set to begin on July 23, Thai made an eleventh-hour application for a sweeping gag order to limit any potential harm to his personal and professional reputation. He said he was also looking to shield several high-profile witnesses he intended to call to testify on his behalf. In his application, Thai asked for the court to hold the trial behind closed doors, seal all court documents, and impose a media blackout of the proceedings. He said the trial touches on matters that are confidential and private, and that they only involve familial matters that do not warrant public interest. Thai, 65, is also understood to be calling several well-known individuals to testify, including a former national badminton player, a distinguished businessman and the manager of a renowned international artiste. The tycoon did not name them but said one witness was about to get married and would not want past romantic relationships brought out into the open. Thai also seeks other protective measures, including an order that all court transcripts remain confidential and be made available only to the parties and their lawyers. He also wants all transcribers to sign non-disclosure agreements. Tan, 64, is represented in the suit by S Ravenesan, while Shearn Delamore & Co acts for Thai. Thai and Tan jointly own Supermax Holdings Sdn Bhd, a substantial shareholder in Supermax Corporation Berhad, one of the world's leading producers of rubber gloves. They were married in 1987, but saw their relationship deteriorate amid allegations from both sides. In 2022, Tan sought a judicial separation. Thai filed for divorce in April last year. Those proceedings are ongoing in the family court.
