Volvo CEO wants EU to cut 'unnecessary' auto tariffs to defuse Trump threat

, arguing that European automakers do not need protection from U.S. competitors, in an interview with Reuters on Thursday.
Brussels, along with representatives from the auto industry, has spent months trying to persuade Washington to lower its 27.5% tariff on imports of European cars.
"If Europe is for free trade, we should be the ones showing the way and going down to very low tariffs first,"
Hakan Samuelsson
said after the company reported second-quarter earnings.
U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to raise tariffs on European Union auto imports to 30% from August 1, increasing pressure on the bloc to strike a deal.
Before Trump's tenure, the U.S. had a 2.5% tariff on European-made cars, while the EU had a 10% duty on vehicles imported from the U.S, which Samuelsson previously said was unfair.
"I think it's absolutely unnecessary, the European car industry definitely does not need to have any protection from American auto builders," he told Reuters.
Volvo Cars, majority-owned by China's
Geely Holding
, is one of the most exposed European automakers to U.S. tariffs as the bulk of its cars sold there are imported from Europe.
Volvo announced late Wednesday that it would start U.S. production in late 2026 of its best-selling model, the hybrid XC60 as a way to mitigate the tariffs.
Currently, its South Carolina plant only produces the Polestar 3 and electric vehicle model EX90 which has struggled to gain traction with U.S. consumers. Volvo has also started slimming down its product offering in the U.S., Reuters reported on Wednesday.
"These are the measures we have control over, rather than when it comes to tariffs we can only have an opinion like everybody else," Samuelsson said.

Russian rouble weakens against US dollar after fresh EU sanctions
The Russian rouble weakened against the U.S. dollar and China's yuan on Friday after the European Union agreed on its 18th package of sanctions against Russia over its war in Ukraine, which included measures against the Russian energy industry. As of 1245 GMT, the rouble was 0.8% lower at 78.70 per U.S. dollar, according to data compiled by LSEG, based on over-the-counter quotes. The rouble is up about 45% against the dollar since the start of the year. The rouble, insulated from global financial flows by Russian currency controls and Western sanctions, remained strong despite a change in the attitude of U.S. President Donald Trump toward Russia in recent weeks. Analysts said the new EU sanctions will have little impact. The rouble is receiving support from more foreign currency sales by the central bank. "Sanctions will increase pressure on the Russian economy, but their effect may be limited. Russia will continue to reorient its exports towards Asia," Russian Agricultural Bank analysts said in a research note. The EU will set a moving price cap on Russian crude at 15% below its average market price, but Russia has so far managed to sell most of its oil above the previous price cap as the current mechanism makes it unclear who must police its implementation. 'Those trying to defame kanwar yatra will face action': Yogi Adityanath
UP CM Yogi Adityanath MEERUT: Miscreants posing as kanwariyas to incite violence and defame the pilgrimage will face strict action, including public naming through posters once the yatra concludes, UP CM Yogi Adityanath said on Sunday. He inspected arrangements and interacted with pilgrims along NH-58. He said miscreants were deliberately infiltrating groups of kanwariyas and indulging in hooliganism to tarnish the image of the yatra. 'Troublemakers have resorted to defame this holy pilgrimage. We have CCTV footage of such elements. We will paste their posters after the yatra is over. Any attempt to disrupt the yatra or compromise its sanctity will be dealt with strictly,' he said. Demonstrating respect for the pilgrims' faith, Yogi showered flower petals on kanwariyas in Meerut and from a helicopter in other districts of western UP. 'From tomorrow, lakhs of Shiv devotees from various states will carry water in the form of kanwar and perform jalabhishek in various Shiv temples. 'While most devotees uphold the sanctity of the yatra, some anti-social elements are conspiring to malign it. It is the responsibility of every kanwar sangh and every Shiv bhakt to expose such elements. Do not allow them to enter your circle. Immediately inform the administration if you spot such people.' Yogi urged pilgrims not to retaliate if provoked and assured that the administration was fully prepared to take legal action. 'No one should take the law into their own hands. The administration is there to act if any such miscreant desecrates the yatra,' he said. He said that unlike previous govts that 'created obstacles for such pilgrimages before 2017', the current govt respected the faith of devotees. 'It is our responsibility to take this tradition forward with the same sacred sentiment,' he said.
