Maalik Review: Rajkummar Rao's Film Is Confusing And Disappointing
Rajkummar Rao's film Maalik, set in 80s and 90s Prayagraj, released on July 11, 2025. Despite Rao's strong performance, it lacks depth. Rajkummar Rao has finally made his mass action debut with the movie, Maalik, which hit theatres on Friday, July 11. And while the film set the anticipation high with its very first dialogue – 'Maalik paida nahin hue to kya, ban to sakte hain" – it only turned out to be disappointing. Set in the chaotic bylanes of 80s and 90s Prayagraj, this gangster saga had promised us an emotional-criminal-political rollercoaster during its massive promotions. But, the only real thrill was watching Rajkummar Rao do his thing. Maalik is the kind of film that comes swaggering into the room like a mafia boss, but by the interval, it only gets confusing. Let's talk about the plot – Heard it. Seen it. Slept through it. Wake up, it's back again! An innocent, poor guy from Prayagraj gets sucked into the underworld, climbs the ladder of crime, and falls flat on his emotional face. He dreams big, close friends betray him, grows a moustache and of course, ends up paying the price of ambition. Maalik tries really hard to be intense and layered. Unfortunately, it ends up giving 'Google se copy-paste kiya kya?" vibes. We've seen this plot in every second gangster movie ever made. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Tips Films (@tipsfilmsofficial) In fact, Maalik tries hard to be the next Mirzapur but ends up feeling like its distant cousin who was never invited to the family reunion. Pankaj Tripathi aka Kaleen Bhaiya's Mirzapur gave us a gritty storyline and iconic one-liners; however, Maalik serves as a recycled crime saga with no real punch. The violence feels random, the plot goes haywire post-interval, and the emotional beats just don't land. It's like watching someone try to recreate a gangster masterpiece with leftover scenes from Mirzapur. Directed by Pulkit and produced by Kumar Taurani and Jay Shewakramani, Maalik tried hard to be a gritty gangster epic. But it looks like there's only a half-hearted attempt made at telling the audience how Rajkummar Rao's character turned into Maalik. Written by Jyotsana Nath and Pulkit, the dialogues don't land as well. The film quickly turned out to be a snooze fest 10 minutes into it as the makers used unnecessary fillers to complete the 2.5-hour movie. The plot is confusing and ends up disappointing fans a lot. Moreover, Anshumaan Pushkar, who plays Maalik's friend, and Prosenjit Chatterjee, seen as a cop, deserved far more depth and screen time. Sadly, their characters were poorly written and barely explored. While the makers clearly wanted to centre everything around Rajkummar Rao, they ended up sidelining two pivotal characters who could've added so much more weight to the narrative. Manushi Chhillar, who plays Maalik's wife, was only eye candy. She doesn't fully show the real emotions of a wife who's scared her husband could die any moment. Swanand Kirkire does a fairly good job as Balhar. But amidst all this chaos stands one man: Rajkummar Rao. He never disappoints and owns every scene. If you want to watch Maalik, you should invest your time and money only to watch him. He drags the entire film on his back. Even when the script forgets what it's doing, Rao knows exactly what he's here for. Honestly, he deserved a better film, a better director, and a screenplay that respected his talent. Maalik is a mess, but Rajkummar makes sure you don't walk out entirely. If there's one thing Maalik does right, it's the guns-blazing, full-volume bloodshed. The action is unapologetically loud and messy. It's the kind of chaos that reminds you of old-school gangster flicks, where logic takes a backseat and dhishoom-dhishoom takes center stage. Watch out for the scene where Rajkummar Rao's eyes pop out red while he hangs four men behind him. Maalik is the cinematic version of mixing Maggi, biryani, chocolate sauce and hoping for a MasterChef dish. Unless you're a die-hard Rajkummar Rao fan, this one's better left on the shelf. Or better, just rewatch Shahid, Trapped, or even Stree. 2 stars out of 5 for Maalik. First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
