De Ridder wins split decision over Whittaker in UFC Abu Dhabi main event

It was a night of celebration for Reinier de Ridder after what can only be described as one of the most important fights in his career so far. The Dutch mixed martial artist narrowly defeated former middleweight champion Robert Whittaker in a razor-close split decision on Saturday, July 26, in the headline fight of UFC Fight Night Abu Dhabi.
Held at the buzzing Etihad Arena on Yas Island, the bout had the crowd on edge from the opening bell. Over five explosive rounds, De Ridder and Whittaker went back and forth, trading takedowns, clinch battles, spilling blood and keeping fans on the edge of their seats.
It was a classic striker-versus-grappler matchup: Whittaker's speed and footwork met with de Ridder's imposing grappling and control. While Whittaker found success on the feet, de Ridder managed to neutralise much of it with his ground game, repeatedly pushing the pace and forcing clinch engagements.
When the final horn sounded, the fight went to the judges' scorecards, and the decision was split. Two judges saw it for de Ridder, with one awarding the fight to Whittaker. The result sparked debate online, but de Ridder walked away with his hand raised, and a defining win on one of the sport's biggest stages.
'I don't want to fight like this [Whittaker], man, this guy was too tough,' de Ridder said in a post-fight interview. 'I expected to take him down. He was so tough, so durable.'
The Dutch fighter had to survive a brutal knockdown in round three when Whittaker dropped him with a right hand to the chin in the opening minute.
The fight capped off an action-packed night in the capital, cementing UFC Abu Dhabi as one of the most exciting dates on the global MMA calendar. Fans from across the Emirates – and beyond – turned up to witness the action, with big performances throughout the card.
With the win, de Ridder instantly becomes a top contender in the UFC's middleweight division and with Abu Dhabi playing host to more frequent fight nights, fans can expect to see more high-stakes showdowns like this one in the near future.
In the co-main event, former UFC bantamweight champion Petr Yan defeated Marcus McGhee by unanimous decision. Yan outpaced his opponent in total strikes, significant strikes, control and takedowns.

German biathlete Dahlmeier dies in climbing accident in Pakistan

German biathlon champion Laura Dahlmeier has died on a mountain in northern Pakistan after a climbing accident at a remote site that rescuers struggled to reach because of bad weather, a local government spokesman said Wednesday. Dahlmeier, an Olympic gold medallist, was ascending Laila Peak in the Karakoram mountain range on Monday when she was struck by falling rocks while climbing with a partner who survived. Rescuers were able to confirm Dahlmeier's death on Wednesday but not retrieve the body because of unfavourable weather, said Faizullah Faraq, a spokesman for the regional Gilgit-Baltistan government. Any final decision on retrieving the body would follow the wishes of Dahlmeier's family, Faraq said. A statement on Dalhmeier's Instagram page said it had been her wish that nobody risk their life to recover her body after an accident. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier offered his condolences to Dahlmeier's parents, writing that she 'was an exceptional sportswoman.' He recalled that he presented her with the highest honour on German sport, the Silver Laurel Leaf, shortly after she won her first Olympic gold medal in 2018. 'Laura Dahlmeier was an ambassador for our country in the world, a role model for peaceful, cheerful and fair coexistence across borders,' he said. Authorities launched the rescue mission on Monday after receiving a distress signal from Dahlmeier's climbing partner, Marina Eva, who managed to descend to base camp with help from rescuers on Tuesday. Dahlmeier's partner had tried for several hours to rescue her, but that wasn't possible because of the difficult terrain and persistent rockfall, the statement on Dahlmeier's Instagram page said. 'Her partner, who could no longer hear any signs of life, eventually decided to leave the danger zone and resume her descent,' according to the statement. It was Dahlmeier's express wish 'that in a case like this, no one should risk their life to recover her,' the statement said, calling for that wish to be respected. It said Dahlmeier's family thank the rescue team and climbers, who did their best to make her rescue possible. Bodies of foreign climbers who die attempting to summit mountains in Pakistan are typically recovered at the request of their families, but if the family declines a rescue, the remains are left at the spot where the climber died. What's On Abu Dhabi World Grappling Championship 2025 comes to Al Ain this weekend

If you've ever watched a UFC fight and wondered what's happening when the punches stop and the sweat-soaked chess match begins, you're probably watching grappling. This weekend, Abu Dhabi is rolling out the mats and stepping deeper into the combat sports arena with the launch of its first-ever World Grappling Championship . The three-day event will take place from August 1 to 3 at ADNEC Centre Al Ain, bringing together hundreds of athletes from more than 60 countries. Whether you've never heard of grappling or you're already fluent in chokeholds and heel hooks, the event promises plenty of action. It's open to male and female competitors across all ages and experience levels, from under-14s to masters, amateurs to professionals. 'This event underscores the UAE's leadership in hosting elite combat sports, offering a platform for athletes worldwide to excel,' said Tareq Al Bahri, General Manager of International Vision Sports Management. Grappling, which sits under the same umbrella as jiu-jitsu, judo and wrestling, has quietly become one of the world's fastest-growing sports. It's a form of close-contact combat where the aim is to take your opponent down, control them on the ground, and make them tap out by twisting them into a human pretzel. No punches. No kicks. Just holds, submissions and sheer willpower. The championship, part of the Abu Dhabi Jiu-Jitsu Pro Tour, will see fighters competing for serious stakes — 2,000 ranking points and hefty cash prizes. The first day kicks off with professional bouts and semi-finals, while youth and amateur divisions take over the second day. It all wraps up with third-place playoffs and final showdowns. Hosting the event in Al Ain is part of a bigger play to spotlight the region's growing role in Abu Dhabi's sporting calendar. Saeed Al Dhaheri, from the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism, said: 'As Abu Dhabi grows in prominence as a hub for major global sporting events, combat sports have emerged as an increasingly important pillar of our sport and entertainment vision for the emirate.' Al Ain might be known for its palm trees and mountain air, but this August it will become a battleground for one of the most technical sports on the planet. And if you've never seen someone twist out of an armbar or flip a fully grown opponent flat on their back, now's your chance.
