Watch: Huge fireball erupts in sky as small plane crashes after take-off at Southend Airport
The airport said in a statement on social media that the crash involved a 'general aviation aircraft.' Essex Police said they were called just before 4 p.m. to reports of a 12-metre-long plane going down near the runway. Authorities asked people to stay away while crews continue their work.
'We are working with all emergency services at the scene now and that work will be ongoing for several hours,' Essex Police said.
The plane has been identified by tracking services as a Beech B200 Super King Air. According to Flightradar, the aircraft took off from Southend at 3:48 p.m. and was headed to Lelystad in the Netherlands.

A man who was at the airport with his family, John Johnson, said he saw the aircraft moments before the crash.
'We all waved at the pilots, and they all waved back at us,' he told AP. 'The aircraft turned 180 degrees to face its take-off, powered up, rolled down the runway. It took off, and about three or four seconds later, it started to bank heavily to its left. Then it inverted and crashed headfirst into the ground.'
'There was a big fireball,' he said, adding that he immediately phoned 999. 'I'd say we're pretty shaken up. I just feel sad for the people on the plane and their families. Our thoughts are with them.'
Images and video shared on X showed plumes of black smoke rising from the airport, with fire engines and emergency vehicles on site.

Police say 4 people were killed in small plane crash at London Southend airport
London, Jul 14 (AP) All four people aboard a small plane that crashed shortly after taking off from London Southend Airport are dead, police said Monday. Essex Police said work continued to formally identify the victims of Sunday's crash. 'At this stage, we believe all four are foreign nationals," Police Chief Superintendent Morgan Cronin told reporters. Britain's national news agency, PA, reported that a document listing passengers indicated that two Dutch pilots and a Chilean nurse were among those aboard. The Beechcraft B200 Super King Air operated by Dutch firm Zeusch Aviation had flown from Athens, Greece, to Pula in Croatia before heading to Southend. It was due to return to its home base of Lelystad in the Netherlands on Sunday evening. The 12-meter (39-foot) turboprop plane came down moments after takeoff and burst into flames. 'At this stage, it is too early to speculate on what may have caused this tragic accident," said Lisa Fitzsimons of Britain's Air Accidents Investigation Branch, which said it sent a 'multi-disciplinary team including inspectors with expertise in aircraft operations, human factors, engineering and recorded data" to the airport. London Southend is a relatively small airport, around 45 miles (72 kilometers) east of the British capital, used for short-haul flights. The airport remained closed on Monday with no word on when it would reopen. In 2017, a plane of the same model crashed into the roof of a shopping mall in Melbourne, Australia, moments after takeoff, killing the pilot and four American tourists. London Southend airport plane crash: 4 people killed, say police
Four people died when a small aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff from London Southend Airport on Sunday, according to Essex Police. In a statement on Monday, police said all four people on board were confirmed dead. None of the victims were British. Work is still ongoing to identify those who died in the crash. The Beechcraft B200 Super King Air, operated by Dutch company Zeusch Aviation, had just taken off from Southend Airport when it crashed and burst into flames. The plane had flown earlier on Sunday from Athens, Greece, to Pula, Croatia, before arriving at Southend. It was scheduled to return to Lelystad in the Netherlands that evening. Witness John Johnson, who was at the airport with his family, described what he saw, 'It took off and about three or four seconds later, it started to bank heavily to the left. Then within a few seconds, it almost flipped over and crashed head-first into the ground. There was a big fireball.' Emergency services including airport fire crews, police, and ambulances quickly responded to the scene. The crash happened just before 4 pm local time. Photos shared on social media and in British newspapers showed flames and thick black smoke rising from the crash site. Police evacuated a nearby golf course and rugby club shortly after the crash as a safety measure. Local MP David Burton-Sampson urged people to stay away from the area. 'Please keep away and allow the emergency services to do their work,' he said on social media. 'My thoughts are with everyone involved.' According to the airport's website, four scheduled flights were cancelled following the incident.
