Guard against infiltration amid Assam eviction drive: Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has directed officials to coordinate with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and traditional heads to ensure that individuals evicted by the Assam government do not enter the State.
on Thursday (July 24, 2025), Mr. Sangma convened a high-level meeting with all Deputy Commissioners to review security and surveillance measures along the interstate border. Chief Secretary D.P. Wahlang, Director General of Police Idashisha Nongrang and other top officials were present.
'The purpose of this meeting was to discuss the overall effect of the recent eviction drives in Assam, particularly in areas close to the border with Meghalaya,' the Chief Minister said after the meeting.
Emphasising the need for heightened vigilance along the border, Mr. Sangma called for coordination among district officials, traditional heads, NGOs, and members of Village Defence Parties to prevent any illegal movement or infiltration, especially in vulnerable regions.
Earlier, a directive issued by the State's Additional Chief Secretary (Home), Shakil P. Ahamed, said, 'In view of the ongoing eviction drive against illegal immigrants undertaken by the Government of Assam and to prevent possible influx of the displaced individuals to the State as a consequence, all Deputy Commissioners are hereby directed to keep vigilant and take necessary measures to ensure the potential influx is kept in check and law and order is maintained.'
Meghalaya has expressed concern over the possible 'spillover' effects of Assam's eviction drives, particularly in the western regions bordering Goalpara and South Salmara-Mankachar districts. A major eviction operation, during which one person was killed in police firing, was conducted recently in Goalpara's Paikan Reserve Forest.
Meghalaya is the third North-eastern State after Nagaland and Manipur to instruct its border district authorities to prevent the entry of individuals evicted from various categories of government land in Assam.
Nagaland, in particular, has intensified monitoring efforts. Officials in the State's Niuland district, which borders Assam's Golaghat district, said that security personnel had 'deported' individuals who had arrived in 'more than 200 vehicles'.
The Assam government is also conducting a survey of forested areas in Golaghat's Uriamghat region in preparation for an eviction drive. Several encroachers are reported to have left the area in anticipation.
Since June, more than 50,000 people, mostly Muslims with roots in Bangladesh, have reportedly been evicted from various parts of Assam.

The MoS also alleged that Hindus in Telangana were being projected as a 'minority' as part of a conspiracy of the Congress party. 'By giving reservations to 100 per cent Muslims, attempts are being made to show Hindus as a minority,' he said. He reiterated that the BJP would not allow 42 per cent reservation for BCs if Muslims are included in BCs. 'We have to stop this here as the Congress plans to implement this Muslim declaration across the country,' he said. Bandi Sanjay alleged that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi wants to weaken the Hindu community by breaching the 50 per cent reservation cap. He remarked that Rahul Gandhi would fail just like his great-grandfather, grandmother, and father failed in their attempts. Bandi Sanjay dares KTR for open debate on BJP MP Ramesh's allegations
Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar has dared BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao for an open debate on the charges made against him by BJP MP from Anakapalli C.M. Ramesh accusing him of making a proposal to merge BRS with BJP in 2023. Talking to reporters in Karimnagar on Sunday, Mr. Sanjay alleged that the BRS rule was steeped in corruption. 'BRS leaders had come up with the merger proposal unable to run their party,' he said in reply to a question. However, during his speech at a public meeting in Nizamabad in 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made it crystal clear that BJP is against family-centric parties and politics of nepotism, he noted. 'Let him (KTR) decide the time and venue. I will arrange a public debate either in Karimnagar or Hyderabad to prove Mr. Ramesh's allegations against Mr. Rama Rao,' he said. 'BRS is on the verge of extinction and its leadership is incapable of running the party,' he charged, accusing Mr. Rama Rao of spearheading a false propaganda against the BJP through social media platforms. 'Such lies will not be tolerated anymore,' he warned, and alleged that the Congress leaders in Telangana were not reacting to KTR's 'abusive language' against their own leaders. Women villagers on outskirts of Bengaluru seek police help over liquor shop menace
Villagers of Rajaghatta, especially women, raised concerns over what they called rampant sale of liquor, and claimed that it is destroying families by pushing their husbands into addiction and joblessness. They sought police help to contain the menace. The issue was brought up during the SC/ST grievance meet organised by the Bengaluru district police along with 'Mane Manege Police' (door-to-door police service) on Sunday. Lakshmamma, one of the villagers, who spoke on behalf of other women in the locality, told Superintendent of Police C.K. Baba that the liquor shops in the area open at 6 a.m., and operate till midnight or beyond . 'This is posing a threat to the families, as the men get drunk early in the morning and do not go to work. Most of the families face a difficult situation due to the alcohol menace and it is pushing them into penury. Even grocery and vegetable shops have started stocking up liquor, making them accessible round the clock,' she said. Mr. Baba summoned the excise department officials to ensure that the liquor shops should adhere to the time specified in the licensing condition. The department and the jurisdictional police have also been asked to conduct regular checks on the illegal sale of liquor at the shops. Meanwhile, a few students present at the meeting complained of being humiliated at schools as they were ridiculed by their friends and classmates for their caste. 'We were mocked and called casteist names. The teachers and village elders are not doing anything despite being aware of this situation,' a student told senior police officers. Taking strong objection, Mr. Baba asked the Panchayat Development officer, and officials of the education department present at the meeting to take immediate action and ensure such practices are not repeated. The police later visited Dalit colonies and pasted stickers containing the names and numbers of police officers to be contacted in any eventuality with the intention of instilling confidence among the general public that the police are at their service. Mr. Baba, along with other officials also had lunch with the villagers. The villagers were urged to help the police force in fighting crime and maintaining law and order.
