No Time To Cast: What do you make of Amazon's James Bond shortlist?

No Time To Cast: What do you make of Amazon's James Bond shortlist?

Euronews3 days ago
Following the news earlier this year that longtime stewards of the James Bond franchise Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson ceded creative control to Amazon Studios, Bond fans were treated to more positive news last week: the identity of the director of Bond 26.
Oscar-nominated filmmaker Denis Villeneuve will be responsible for ushering the 007 series into a new era. When the announcement was made, we gave our verdict on the choice, and we couldn't be more excited.
Now that things are speeding up regarding production, the next big reveal is the identity of the actor who will succeed Daniel Craig and take up the coveted mantle of James Bond.
The rumour mill keeps spinning, and everyone from Idris Elba, Tom Hardy, Michael Fassbender, Tom Hiddleston and Henry Cavill has been put forward as the next Martini swigging secret agent.
Last year, we reported that Aaron Taylor-Johnson had apparently screen tested to be the next 007 and that he'd been offered the top job – a rumour only galvanized by Taylor-Johnson recently becoming the new Omega brand ambassador.

However, all these names could be old news now that Amazon's MGM Studio's shortlist for the new Bond has been unveiled.
While there has been no official casting announcement yet, Variety reports that three names have emerged as frontrunners: Jacob Elordi, Harris Dickinson and Tom Holland are reportedly 'at the top of [the studio's] list.'
These names make sense considering Amazon is clearly aiming for a British male who's under-30, which means three things:
Bond 26 will wipe the slate clean and serve as an origin story for the iconic spy.
Barbara Broccoli may be out but Amazon are following her rule that James Bond is a role that shouldn't be gender-swapped.
Fan favourites like Hardy, 47; Fassbender, 48; and Cavill, 42, are off the table. Shame, even if we're not upset about Cavill, as he'd be far too obvious for Bond. Plus, he's been Superman... Give someone else a shot at cinematic glory. As for Taylor-Johnson, 35, he could also be out of luck.
Let's run through the recently released frontrunners:
Jacob Elordi
Age: 28
Height: 1,96m
Seen in: Euphoria, Saltburn, Priscilla - and soon to be in Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein.
Bond material: He may not be British, but it wouldn't be the first time an Australian actor has played Bond, after George Lazenby put on the tux for his solo adventure On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Not sure that's the benchmark we should be aiming for, but there's precedent.
Verdict: A fine actor; tall; dark; handsome; but there's nothing particularly inventive about this pick. Casting him would feel like a trendy choice rather than an inspired one.
Harris Dickinson
Age: 29
Height: 1,88m
Seen in:Triangle of Sadness, The Iron Claw, Babygirl - and soon to be playing John Lennon in Sam Mendes' Beatles biopic(s).
Bond material: Dickinson is probably the most interesting of the three favourites. He's a great actor and has plenty of range. Plus, he has experience in the action genre, having starred in The King's Man (2021).
Verdict: Out of the three, he's the one we'd be most intrigued about... But again, nothing that shakes our Martinis.
Tom Holland
Age: 29
Height: 1,69m
Seen in: The Spider-Man franchise; the wider MCU; Uncharted; The Impossible; The Devil All The Time - and soon to be in Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey.
Bond material: Holland has proven he's a solid leading man. However, while Brit has plenty of range, his youthful looks don't really fit the brooding 007. Of the three, Bond fans have reacted to Holland with the most scepticism - and we concur. (Check out some of the reactions below.)
Verdict: Charismatic; the shortest of the three; maybe a bit too cute and not rugged enough for Bond; he's already Spider-Man – give it to someone who hasn't already had their big break.
All in all, it's hard to get too excited about this shortlist.
Beyond our surprise that Timothée Chalamet's name isn't on the list, considering his ubiquity and working relationship with Villeneuve on the Dune films, these three picks feel like safe, casting-by-algorithm – as if Amazon bods gathered in a room to share their primary concern: streaming metrics. Surely fans deserve better than that...
Where's the edge, the surprise factor? Where's Paul Mescal, Damson Idris or even Riz Ahmed? Older actors, granted, but significantly more inspired options.
Plus, a common denominator with previous Bond castings was that the actor wasn't an obvious pick. Take Daniel Craig, who was apparently 'too blond for Bond' and whose casting as 007 provoked a great amount of online bile. And look how that turned out: Casino Royale, one of the most critically acclaimed Bond films in the series.
So, considering this is only a reported shortlist, let's not give up hope too quickly.
Villeneuve's track record proves that the Canadian master behind Sicario, Prisoners, Arrival, Blade Runner 2049 and the Dune films can make something cerebral, dark and ambitious – and the casting needs to reflect that. Considering he's also exec producing alongside his partner Tanya Lapointe, chances are he'll have some say on casting, and surely that means the final choice for the next James Bond won't be as disappointing as this reported shortlist.
Currently there is no official release date or title for the next Bond movie - Amazon is reportedly looking at a release late 2027 or 2028.

Oasis return to stage tonight for their first gig in 16 years

Britpop legends Oasis are due to take to the stage tonight in Cardiff's Principality Stadium, Wales, kicking off their hotly anticipated reunion tour. The return of the British rockers after a 16-year hiatus is a major moment for fans, who are excited to see Noel and Liam Gallagher together again – even if some have started to place bets on whether the sparring siblings will be able to hold it together for the whole Live '25 tour. 'That's one of the attractions about Oasis - they bring this element of risk,' said author and music journalist John Aizlewood, adding that the 'alternative aura that they have cultivated with the age-old pop story of fractious brothers' is part of the band's appeal. A huge drone display showing Oasis' classic logo even appeared above the Principality Stadium. Unless the brothers' combustible relationship derails proceedings, two nights at Cardiff's 70,000-capacity Principality Stadium on Friday and Saturday raise the curtain on a 41-date Live '25 tour. After 19 dates in in the UK and Ireland come stops in North and South America, Asia and Australia - ending in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on 23 November. Fans in mainland Europe will either have to travel, stop crying their hearts out, or just roll with it. Founded in the working-class streets of Manchester in 1991, Oasis released their debut album, 'Definitely Maybe', in 1994 and became one of the dominant British acts of the 1990s. They released eight UK No. 1 albums, producing hits including 'Wonderwall', 'Roll With It' and 'Don't Look Back in Anger' - all from the album '(What's The Story) Morning Glory?', which turns 30 this year. Oasis finally split in 2009, with Noel Gallagher quitting the band after a backstage dustup with Liam at a festival near Paris. Liam destroyed a red Gibson guitar belonging to his brother in a heated argument before the gig, and this moment is said to have triggered the break-up of the band, sparking years of public feuds between the brothers. The Gallagher brothers, now aged 58 and 52, haven't performed together since, though both regularly play Oasis songs at their solo gigs. They long resisted pressure to reunite, even with the promise of a multimillion-dollar payday. Now they have agreed on a tour that will see them joined by former Oasis members Paul 'Bonehead' Arthurs and Gem Archer on guitars, bassist Andy Bell and drummer Joey Waronker. The announcement of the UK tour in August sparked a ticket-buying frenzy, complete with error messages, hours-long online queues, dashed hopes and anger at prices that surged at the last minute. Some fans who waited online for hours at the Ticketmaster site complained that they ended up paying £355 for regular standing tickets instead of the expected £148. The ticketing troubles sparked questions in Britain's Parliament, where Arts Minister Chris Bryant criticized 'practices that see fans of live events blindsided by price hikes.' Britain's competition regulator has since threatened Ticketmaster — which sold some 900,000 Oasis tickets — with legal action. Tickets for the UK shows sold out in hours, with some soon offered on resale websites for as much as £6,000. More than 50,000 tickets were cancelled by the band for being sold on secondary platforms. No plans have been announced for Oasis to record any new music. Their last album was 2008's 'Dig Out Your Soul'. This year's world tour is being presented as a one-off. For now.

Celebrity reactions to split Diddy verdict: ‘I'm gonna vomit'

Sean 'Diddy' Combs was convicted yesterday of a prostitution-related offense but acquitted of more serious counts that could have put him behind bars for life. Combs, 55, could still face a maximum of 10 years in prison. He was denied bail after being convicted, as prosecutors said Combs remains a flight risk. A hearing has been set by the judge for 8 July to discuss the sentencing process. The verdict has drawn divided reactions by his fellow celebrities. 'Oh, this makes me physically ill,' said singer Aubrey O'Day, formerly of the music group Danity Kane, on her Instagram story as she watched the verdicts come in. "Cassie probably feels so horrible. I'm gonna vomit.' Danity Kane formed on Combs' MTV reality television program 'Making the Band' and signed to his Bad Boy Records. O'Day posted a separate statement: 'The cultural weight of this decision is immeasurable. It is heartbreaking to witness how many lives have been impacted by their experiences with Sean Combs - only for those stories to fall short in the eyes of a jury." She added: "I can only hope these jurors never have to watch someone they love endure what so many survivors have described.' Une publication partagée par Rosie O'Donnell (@rosie) 'I guess a jury just never wants to believe that a woman stays because of power and coercion, wow,' wrote actress Rosie O'Donnell on Instagram. 'This decision got me angry.' Grammy-nominated singer Kesha posted the following in solitary with Cassie Ventura, Combs ex-girlfriend who testified as a witness: 'Cassie, I believe you. I love you. Your strength is a beacon for every survivor.' Kesha had previously announced that she was changing the lyric in her 2010 hit 'TiK ToK' to 'fuck P. Diddy' from the original 'feeling like P. Diddy' after the multiple allegations of sexual misconduct were leveled against Combs. Elsewhere, rapper 50 Cent, who has been a vocal critic of Combs and previously said that he would reach out to Donald Trump to prevent a Diddy pardon, posted: "Diddy beat the (RICO charge), that boy a bad man !" alongside an artificial intelligence-generated photo of himself. He also mocked Diddy and compared him to mobster John Gotti. Une publication partagée par 50 Cent (@50cent) Conversely, rapper Boosie BadAzz said in an Instagram video captioned 'GREAT DAY N HIP HOP" that the courts had spoken. 'I'm tired of seeing us Black moguls get took down like that," he said. He added that he was "tired of seeing us Black people go against us Black moguls like that.' Also on Diddy's side where some crowds outside the courthouse. Some of Combs' fans expressed enthusiasm by covering themselves in baby oil, a controversial item referenced throughout the sex-crimes case. Thousands of bottles of baby oil and lubricant were among the paraphernalia discovered during the federal raids of Combs' homes in March 2024. In one crass celebration, a woman danced around while a man poured baby oil on her – a tasteless homage to an activity at Combs' so-called 'freak-offs' and 'hotel nights.' However, the general consensus online is one of dismay. "The verdict for Diddy is a message to all women that they are not believed. Sorry to the women out there," wrote an X user. "The victims especially, they deserved better."

Retro 90s raves inspire new Pretty Green x Kappa collection launch

British menswear brand Pretty Green and Italian sportswear brand Kappa have launched their first collaboration with a limited-edition capsule collection. Inspired by the 'style and spirit of the 1990s, from bold silhouettes to the rebellious attitude that defined the era', the two brands celebrated a shared history that 'brings together the UK's musical heritage and Italian sportswear legacy'. The seven-piece capsule features a hooded jacket, two retro-inspired football tops, a tracksuit (top and bottoms), bucket hat and even a co-branded football. All styles feature dual branding, pairing Kappa's Omini logo, tape arm detailing with Pretty Green's psychedelic icon, accompanied by three stars 'taking direct inspiration' from the 97-99 Manchester City football kits. Standouts include the Maine Road Hooded Jacket, taking its namesake from the football club's previous home ground. The Home Maine Road Football Top combines vintage sportswear with Pretty Green's signature paisley, decorating the top as an allover faded print, available in blue and white. Completing the look, the tracksuit pairs the Maine Road Track Top and Maine Road Track Pants, featuring both brand logos and the paisley print. The collection is available at pretty and selected retailers with clothing priced £65-£130.
