Israeli airstrikes kill seven in Gaza

At least seven Palestinians were killed and several others injured early Sunday in a series of Israeli airstrikes targeting Gaza City and Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip, Palestinian News & Information Agency (WAFA) reported.
According to local medical sources, five people, including two women and a child, were killed when Israeli warplanes struck a tent sheltering displaced families in the Al-Mawasi area west of Khan Younis. Several others sustained injuries in the same attack.
Meanwhile, Israeli forces continued to demolish residential buildings in central Khan Younis. Heavy artillery shelling was also reported in the Al-Mawasi area of Rafah, compounding the already dire humanitarian situation in southern Gaza.
This escalation comes as the overall death toll in the Gaza Strip continues to rise since October 7 2023, bringing the total to 56,412, the majority of whom are women and children, and 133,054 injured, according to the latest figures released by Palestinian health authorities.
Meanwhile, the Israeli army issued mass evacuation orders on Sunday warning residents of multiple densely populated neighbourhoods in Gaza City and Jabalia of 'intensifying military activity' across the northern part of the Strip.

Netanyahu claims Iran war opened door to free Gaza captives

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court for alleged war crimes, said on Sunday that Israel's recent war with Iran had created new 'opportunities'—including a chance to free captives held in Gaza. 'Many opportunities have opened up now following this victory. First of all, to rescue the hostages,' Netanyahu told senior security officials. He added that Israel must still 'solve the Gaza issue' and defeat Hamas, expressing confidence both goals could be achieved. The ICC issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant in 2024, accusing them of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Gaza. Both men have dismissed the charges as 'anti-Semitic'.

June deadliest month for Israeli troops in Gaza since war began

The Israeli military says a soldier was killed by an explosive device in northern Gaza on Sunday, bringing the total number of Israeli troops killed in the besiged enclave this month to 20—the highest monthly toll in a year of fighting. Last week, seven soldiers were killed in a single blast near Khan Younis in the south. According to the Israeli army, 880 of its soldiers have died since the war began on 7 October. Since Israel resumed its offensive on 18 March—ending a temporary ceasefire with Hamas—29 soldiers have been killed, the majority of them in June.
