Former Man Utd striker Mason Greenwood returns to Manchester for training
Mason Greenwood has returned to Manchester for a training session, 12 months after he left the city following his departure from Manchester United and move to Ligue 1 side Marseille Ex-Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood has been spotted training in England, a year after his move to Marseille. The 23-year-old uploaded photos to social media of himself partaking in drills at the home of Manchester-based non-league side Chadderton FC. The Bradford-born forward joined the Red Devils' academy at the tender age of six and made his first-team debut under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2019, soon becoming the club's youngest European goalscorer at just 17. In October 2022, Greenwood was charged with attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and controlling and coercive behaviour. These charges were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service a year later. Following his arrest, Greenwood was suspended by United and loaned out to Spanish side Getafe. In July of 2024, he left Old Trafford for good, signing for Ligue 1 side Marseille in a deal worth £26.6million. Now, roughly a year after leaving Manchester, Greenwood has been seen back in the area, training with Chadderton, a well-known non-league team based in Oldham, reports the Manchester Evening News. Pictures on Instagram show Greenwood taking part in sprints and shooting drills on Chadderton's new 3G pitch, alongside former United team-mate D'Mani Mellor. Mellor and Greenwood once shared the pitch during a shocking 2-1 loss to Astana in the Europa League back in 2019. The United youngsters had taken an early lead through Jesse Lingard, only to be shocked by a second-half revival from the Kazakhstani side, cemented by an own goal from Di'Shon Bernard. The 24-year-old experienced a series of loan moves before a permanent switch to Wycombe Wanderers in 2022. He is now starring for Macclesfield and was spotted training with Greenwood once again earlier this month, this time at a Manchester-based facility. As for Greenwood, his first campaign with Marseille was an incredibly successful one, as he tied with Ballon d'Or hopeful and Champions League winner Ousmane Dembele atop the Ligue 1 goal-scoring charts with 21. This prolific strike rate helped his team secure a second-placed finish, earning them a berth in next season's Champions League. They'll also be welcoming former United hopeful Angel Gomes into their ranks. Marseille's championing of Greenwood doesn't end there; team-mate Adrien Rabiot held nothing back in his praise, telling The Athletic: "Mason is an incredible player. "If he hadn't had all of his problems, I think he'd have an image like [Jude] Bellingham. Mason would be the star. Because he's an exceptional player. "He can score with his right foot and his left foot, he has an exceptional shot, he can dribble. We're very lucky to have him. When he's really focused, he does really great things." Five fights Dana White can make for Ilia Topuria after epic UFC 317 KO, including Paddy Pimblett grudge match
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) ILIA TOPURIA is the new king of the UFC's lightweight division. The Georgian-born Spaniard became only the TENTH fighter in the history of MMA's premier promotion to hold titles in two weight classes last weekend in the main event of UFC 317 in Las Vegas. Attention has already turned to who the 28-year-old will fight in his maiden defence of the 155lbs throne, which he'll no doubt be hoping will take place in his adopted homeland of Spain. And SunSport is on hand with five fighters the new fan favourite could face in his next outing. Paddy Pimblett Given their long-standing beef, which stemmed from social media comments Pimblett made about Georgians, this fight is an absolute no-brainer. The pair are currently the two biggest names in the stacked division, so pitting them together, especially when they're both in red-hot form, makes sense. The build-up to this one would be box office, especially after their blockbuster post-fight face-off and near-brawl. UFC supremo Dana White has, however, already revealed he's not keen on pitting the pair against one another next. But the demand for this fight, the biggest the promotion can make at the moment in time, is white hot. Islam Makhachev Watch jacked Ilia Topuria complete epic UFC 317 body transformation after ditching crash diet to lose over 40lbs Topuria, of course, moved up from featherweight in February to pursue a champion-versus-champion with pound-for-pound king Islam Makhachev. Makhchev, as we all know, ended up begrudgingly vacating the 155lbs belt to pursue welterweight gold once former training partner Belal Muhammad lost the belt to Jack Della Maddalena. The Dagestani destroyer is understood to harbour ambitions of reclaiming the belt he won in October 2022. It would make for a fantastic storyline if Makhachev were to win gold at 170lbs and drop back down to 155lbs to try to reclaim what was once his in a super-fight fans are still pining for. 8 Arman Tsarukyan The Armenian, of course, was set to challenge Makhachev for the belt in January before a freak back injury less than 48 hours before fight night scuppered the bout. Tsarukyan, who is on a four-fight win streak, weighed in as the backup fighter for the main event. So it would make sense for him to be in the running to be Topuria's first opponent for his reign as king of the lightweights. 8 Arman Tsarukyan weighed in as the backup fighter for UFC 317's main event so is in the title mix Credit: GETTY Justin Gaethje He may only be riding a one-fight win streak, and just over a year removed from a brutal KO at the hands of Max Holloway, but there is a case for Gaethje getting the title shot. He did the UFC brass a favour by agreeing to defend the BMF belt against Holloway at UFC 300 following back-to-back wins of Rafael Fiziev and Dustin Poirier. The promotion threw a boatload of cash at Gaethje in order to jazz up their tri-centennial card and his decision to take the fight cost him dearly. Doing him a solid and giving him a third crack at undisputed lightweight gold at Topuria is the least the UFC could do. 8 Justin Gaethje is holding out for a tite shot and will retire if he doesn't get one Credit: GETTY Max Holloway Although Topuria became the first man to crack Holloway's chin in his first and final featherweight title defence, there is still some interest in a rematch between the pair. Holloway cut a drained figure in their fight as he was returning to the weight class having filled out his frame to face Gaethje in their BMF bout at UFC 300. The weight cut could've played a role in his chin finally giving out, although Topuria does carry insane power in both hands. Either way, should Holloway win his trilogy fight with Poirier next month in emphatic fashion, the appetite for a rematch will likely be there.

May strike seals win for Livingston
Two second-half goals helped Livingston earn a victory at Alloa in their first pre-season challenge. Robbie Muirhead netted from the penalty spot, firing the ball straight down the middle of the goal, to open the scoring at the Indodril Stadium, but Irish-born forward, Connor Sammon, scored for the home side to level seconds from the break after slack defending. Livingston went ahead for a second time when Reece McAlear collected a ball and he scored from 12 yards and Stevie May then scored a spectacular goal, nicking possession near half-way and then sending the ball into the rigging with the goalkeeper struggling to get back for a 3-1 win. Two of David Martindale's summer acquisitions, Connor McLennan and Mo Sylla were given game time and Danny Wilson, who re-signed during the week, was also on duty. The Lions now head for Holland and their training camp when they are scheduled to play two games, the first against Greek, side Aris FC, on Thursday and against Belgian opposition in K V Kortrijk on Saturday. Meanwhile, Label 5 Scotch whisky continue as a men's first-team shirt sponsor for the next campaign. The name of the Bathgate-based business will appear below the player number until the end of the season however they may continue the partnership beyond this term. FLASHBACK: Stevie May scored at Alloa for Livingston on Saturday but he also played for St Johnstone and here he is playing against Hearts. Like this: Like Related
